1. Me too.... I have not got the manual yet but I was looking forward to checking out those multicoloured diagrams. but its no big deal I can wait if they will be available at some later date... I somehow doubt they will be downloadable as the competition might want to re-purpose them for there new not yet released (fictional) CM -killer 3D WW II squad level wargame. (Hasbro : and Soldiers at War 2, I'm not refering to you ) I would bet those armour penetration diagrams will only be available, (somehow) to those of us who have bought the game. (ok, by that logic that fictional new CM killer game designers could buy them too, but at least then BTS would not be giving them away ) -tom w
 2. Hi Thanks for that post Ray, now I'm REALLY curious ( have not got my game yet) Can some one tell what is the name of the operation that Mr. Wittman is featured in, (as pee Ray's post) that should be the FIRST thing I want to check out.... thanks -tom w "MantaRay Member posted 06-21-2000 03:42 AM I think i know that scenario too. I actually got a Sherman in that ambush, but lets just say that the white stuff was just a bit red after those pissed Americans got through with them!!! Well now on to round 3 of a very tough Operation involving Mr Wittman. 3. Yes TCP/IP is a BIG deal, and yes I do really care because, perhaps like your opponent who finished his turn in 3 minutes, I would like to play relatively quickly, so its the turn timers that will REALLY make this game an adrenaline rush. YES, I want turn timers, I can't wait. I hope there is a user defineable timer for the set-up phase and a different timer for the orders phase and a different timer for the movie watching phase. I can see a need for a little longer set phase, but the orders phase and the movie phase should be set to something pretty quick. I would like to play against opponents that would be comfortable with a setting of 2-4 minutes for the movie and 5-7 minutes for the orders phase so that one complete turn (two orders phases, one each and two watch-the-movie phases) would take no more than a maximum of 20 minutes or so with the minute or two to crunch the turn. Yes we are looking forward to TCP/IP but more than that I am really looking forward to the timers and I really hope they are highly user configurable. (three different timers and the user can set the time limit for any number of minutes they both mutually agree to.) And so it is clear I'm not whinning I'm happy to wait the two months or so it will take to fully develop this patch. Go BTS and thanks again (still waiting for my game but not complaining) -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 5.
quote:
Originally posted by KiloIndiaAlpha: Count me in for ASL conversions. I know a couple of REAL HARDCORE ASL players. Tell them the challenge has been laid down by arm chair generals who LOVE this game like me. I have looked at ALS but it was WAY too complicated for me. But this game makes all the rules and hit tables EASY and all you have to do is focus on GREAT tactics and there is NO cheating, and no fat tabby cat messing up the units, and NO "diddling" with unit counters and the Fog of War is GREAT here. I hope all the Hard core fans of ASL will join us for the best Post D-Day tactical battles of their lives using this WONDERFUL game! -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 6. Its quite simple really the Mail Gods have spoken and EVERYONE who has behaved poorly on this BBS (you know the type, childish behavoiur and excessive flaming, not regular run of the mill flaming mind you, but gratuitous and excessive flaming) has now aquired some uundesirable karma and the Mail Gods have mystriously held up or delayed your order.... I cannot think of a more plausable explanation.. (Ok my cd will now be delayed a day or two as well..... I guess by that logic) -tom ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 7. I think we all played Shermans against that Panther in VoT and if you did not learn to manouver your Shermans to do what ever you can to get a flank or rear shot on that Panther then SHAME on you. The Panther has VERY heavy armour head-on and you should expect richottes. Just do the math for your self. Click (select) the Panther and hit return (or enter?) then look at the slope on mm thickness of the armour on its frontal aspects. Now click (select) your sherms and find out how far from the target they are, WHat is their range? now look at the penetration ability of their main gun at that range. It will give a value in mm say 98? SIMPLE math if the mm of thickness of their main gun pentration is less than (given sloped armour effects) of the mm of thickness of armour on the front of the Panther then those Sherm rounds will bounce of that Panther all day long or until you get the Magical 1% critical hit which models an armour weaknes on 1% of the hits in a given aspect of the tank (1 in 100) and 30% 50% armour less than the rest of the regular surounding (normal) armour. (mostly this is intended to accurately model weak armour area's like the co-axial machine gun mount or the driver's vision slit, this little tid bit was reported by Charles in an old tank gunnery thread, if you are interested search for "1% critical hit") So simply do the MATH.... Look at the mm of armour thickness on the sides and rear and see if you can penetrate that. And at what range, and plan your tactics accordingly. If you sent 6 sherms head on into a Panther you deserved to get 5-6 of them ko'd Panthers are very unlikly to ko'd from the front by a Sherm other comments ?.. -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

[This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 06-20-2000).]

 9. Hey Steve and Charles with your new found profits can you recruit some of those Bungie artists or programers that worked on Myth and Myth II? Perhaps some of them won't want to go and work for (the now about to be broken up) Microslut! Just a thought.... -tom w P.S. If you have never seen Myth II it is truly 3D and it is stunningly beautiful in its graphics. Check it out. ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 10. I'm sorry but I can't see this being good for The Mac gaming community. Bungie Makes Myth and Myth II and if you have ever seen them or played them, you will know CM's graphics are down right spartan compare to the beauty and sizzling eye candy in Myth II. It is a wonderful 3D RTS stategy game that has NO production or resource harvesting. But it only has swordsmen and archers and scottish dwarf's with satchel charges that make a big BOOM! any way heres the news: from: http://www.macnn.com/feature.php?id=43 Microsoft buys Bungie by Eli Udell Posted Monday, June 19, 2000 @ 9:00am In a stunning move, Microsoft Corp. is again shaking up the computer world with a buyout. This time, Chicago-based Bungie Software -- long considered a stalwart in the Mac gaming world -- has joined the software giant and will take a lead role in Microsoft's development of the its forthcoming Xbox gaming console. In a deal that will be announced later today, Bungie will essentially become a development branch of Microsoft. Take Two Interactive, the long-time distributor of Bungie’s titles, will retain the exclusive rights to the popular Myth series and highly anticipated action game, Oni, due out later this year, in exchange for selling its 19.9 percent interest in Bungie. Founded in 1991, Bungie and founder Alexander Seropian hit instant fame with the help of partner Jason Jones, a college gaming enthusiast with an interest in programming. Their first major title, Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete, revolutionized the Macintosh gaming world by creating the "groupware" precedent; whereby two or more players could play the first-person shooter over a modem or AppleTalk network. In 1993, Bungie went on to create one of the first games written native to the RISC-based Power Macintosh platform. Pathways Into Darkness, though never attaining extreme fame, won numerous awards during its peak. The company would get its blockbuster, however, upon its next release. At Christmas time in 1994, Marathon hit the shelves and sparked hysteria in the Mac gaming community. The title dominated chat sessions, message boards and Internet gaming forums while giving Mac users one of the first titles that truly made PC gamers envious. Marathon added two sequels later on, with Marathon 2 and Marathon Infinity, both later ported two the Windows platform and representing the company’s first Windows efforts. Bungie once again captured both Mac and PC gamers with the 1997 release of Myth: The Fallen Lords, a revolutionary 3-D action/strategy, and the follow-up blockbuster, Myth II: Soulblighter. Last year, at Macworld Expo in New York City, James Jones wowed the crowd during Steve Jobs’ keynote address with his preview of Halo, Bungie’s well-documented new title that was set for release in 2001. Halo appears to be the centerpiece of the acquisition; Microsoft plans on positioning the game as one of the major titles at the launch of Xbox. In the deal itself, Microsoft will gain the exclusive publishing and distribution rights to Halo. However, unconfirmed rumors persist that Microsoft reportedly has no interest in completing development of the Windows and Macintosh versions. Bungie’s development staff will become an independent team within the confines of Microsoft’s Redmond, Wash. headquarters. While aiding in the creation of Xbox, Bungie will reportedly be able to continue developing new game titles for both Mac and PC, at its own discretion. Bungie’s California-based office, which is presently finishing up Oni, will complete the title and then join their coworkers in Redmond. ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 11.
quote:
Originally posted by rich12545: I disagree. The game is now out. Add-on packs would amount to nothing more than mods. Different units, different terrain, maybe substitute brown for grey to simulate blowing sand instead of fog. Shouldn't take that long. BTS could charge $30 a mod, make a fortune by the end of the year and then start on the next great game. They'd be way ahead and so would we.

HELLO! Guess what, the mods are out now, people have been working on cool textures and other audio sound file mods. Anyone can do this, there is a whole thread that tells you how to create your own mods. So if BTS did that then charged extra for some different colours and textures I'd be irrate! NO .... they will continue to make great games, and they will code specific variables and specific algorythyms for new units and terrain specific to those new theaters of war. Most of us would expect nothing less. And when those new games are ready you can bet 99% of the people on this board will have preodered and be waiting for a NEW game with new code ( Based on the CM engine of course) that will specifically model battlefields, units, and combat in another theater of operations in WW II and we woud be happy to pay for it and would expect no LESS, so if just want Mods, make your own or download someone else's, but don't expect BTS to think about charging us $30.00 for some new colours and textures, they are far above that! rant off -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 19.
quote:
Originally posted by Private Pike: Just a point, commanders often didn't have acturate maps during WW2. he Germans in Russia had to use school atlases at some points as no maps existed (the Russians kept them secret) and during the drive through France after the breakout from Normandy the Allied tankers were often ahead of their maps as they were advancing far quicker than expected.

Thank-you Private Pike! As per "Kelly's Hero's" (ok, whacky Hollywood war movie I admit) I have suggested that out of date normal everyday Michellin road maps were sometimes used during the Allied advance after D-Day. When I posted this the first time, I was (sort of) laughed at as many here could not believe that these commanders did not have up to date brand new topo maps to navigate by. I would suggest in many cases they did not have topo maps and as a commander the only thing you should see before you hit the battlefield and recon it WITH your troops by establishing LOS to what you think MIGHT be there, is a possiblely out of date 2D road map of the area. This has been discussed at length and it will likely remain just a good idea for at least a few years. Oh Well.... But I still Love this game. 22.
quote:
Originally posted by Big Time Software: Yeah, that was a strange one. Saw it happening, but no matter how fast you hit the STOP button... it isn't fast enough Rick, I am sure that you will find some stuff in the manual that will improve your skills. The more "subtle" stuff sometimes gives someone enough of an edge that they can do a bit better against a good player who is missing the little stuff. Steve

Even in the demo without the manual, those of you/us (whatever) that have mastered tricks like getting tanks into hull down postions and how to lay ambushes and how to target indirect mortar fire without LOS via a HQ with LOS already have an advantage over those who do not. I'm sure there will be many more of these little things covered in the manual and those who chose to actually read the manual will likely be alot better off for it. -tom w
 23.
quote:
Originally posted by Big Time Software: Tom - yes crew skill plays a very large part in the accuracy calculations. Conscript tankers will miss point blank shots at the Mk. I "Barn Door". And experienced crews are also a lot faster. They'll get two shots off for every one that their green counterparts fire. So they bracket faster and... boom. Target gone! Experience levels are: Conscript, Green, Regular, Veteran, Crack, Elite. Mikeydz - correct, there is never a literal 100% chance of a hit in CM. Nothing is for certain! Charles

Well OK! Now I get it. I have a feeling an elite crew in a heavy german tank is going to make short order of most other allied tanks. I can really see where crew skill in tanks could easily tip the balance of a scenario. Again thanks for your most recent post Charles. I can't wait to play scenario's with elite crews on BOTH sides, that should be entertaining and prove deadly and bloody. I can just see Elite SS crews in some of those late war heavy German tanks proving to be VERY difficult beasts to take down. I CAN"T WAIT! Bring on the GAME! -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 24.
quote:
Originally posted by Big Time Software: But do keep in mind things like human error and mechanical problems. These are quite common on the WW2 battlefield, so actual performance in the heat of battle is still likely to be lower than "expected" results. Charles

Thanks Charles, I will freely admit that my position regarding 90 -99% hit odds for the third shot is unsupported by any real world data or experience. Thank-you for clarifying your position. I will admit that my desire for 90 -99% third round fired hit odds in the heat of battle fired by an average crew is too high. Given what you have stated about the reality of all the reasons why they could miss, it seems the game works very well. I would however make the suggetion at this point that there seems, to me at least, to be an alarming amount of first shot hits. Although in the test Mikeydz ran, 53% seemed pretty realistic. I would like to see first shot hits under those circumstances at les than 50% for al the same reasons you have suggested third shot hits should not be in the 90 -99% range. But again I fully admit my opinion is not supported by the same kind of research and experience you folks have put into the game, so I could be just spouting another unsupported and unrealistic opinion with regard to first shot hit frequency as well. I think the game models the result of the hit EXTREMELY well ( ricochetes and penetrations and the Gun hits and immobolized results like that). May I ask again if crew level/skill is factored in to the "to hit" algorythyms? Is it also factored into the result of the hit part of the algorythym? I'm suggesting a vertran crew may have a better chance to target something vital like the turret ring or main gun or may be more likely to brew up a tank by hitting a more vulnerable location in the tank's armour? (OK, I admit now I am probaly getting too picky) Are there tank crews of differing levels of skill and experience. (I think there are but I can't remember). Does the game model the fact that a veteran crew is more likely to be more accurate? What are the varying levels of crew skill? Green? Regular? Veteran? Fantical? is that correct? Again thanks for all the replies and posts. I only ask this because I CAN'T wait for my own copy. Hopefully it will be here later this week and you'll never hear from me again !! (too busy playing and designing scenario's of course) (don't count on it though, I think I'm as addicted to posting on this board as I am playing the damn game!) Charles, thanks for the insight and all the posts in reply to how tank gunnery works in this game I do truly appreciate them all. - tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 25.
quote:
Originally posted by jonp: Sorry if this sounds dumb, but what are advantages/dis to having your tank button up vs button down? I know the obvious that when buttoned down, your men are safe so what are disadvantages to having them down? Is the only reason is not spotting nearby units? Thx

Quite simply the unbuttoned TC (Tank commander) can see and spot more distant enemy units when unbuttoned, but he could get picked off by a sniper then your tank will button up and never unbutton and be disadvantaged by the loss of the TC. The buttoned tank does not "see" as far or as well (this means limited enemy spotting ability) but all the crew members of the tank are safe from being picked off by snipers or machine guns or stray bullets. And remember folks, just like in the real life work place....
