1. Hey Buddy thats a good question... And if I may, while we are at it, May I ask... If, as a designer, you put a victory flag squarely and clearly on a bridge, and that bridge is destroyed, is the flag still valid and does the side with the most forces in the vacinity of the destroyed bridge get the victory points for that flag??? I have not played any scenarios where you have to take or hold bridges but I am working on putting one together in the scenario editor now. Any comments would be appreciated. thanks -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 2. Why not just post it and let us test it... ? More people would test it faster. You know as soon as v1.03 is released EVERYONE will donwnload it and play it (read playtest it) to death anyway. Then if there is something that REALLY needs fixing there will be another patch... thats how these things go.. I hope its out be this weekend -tom w
quote:
Originally posted by jgdpzr: Charles was on last week to say that all 1.03 needed was about another week of testing. That was middle of last week so my guess is we'll see it up by the weekend. TCP/IP is not in 1.03.

 3. "What I'm getting at is, war games tend to screen out the most interesting parts of a battle - what actually happens on the ground. I'm not criticising games - least of all CM - for that, but it can be a barrier to your appreciation of what's going on." If you want that kind of thing how about trying Rainbow 6 or Myth II? Myth II is a VERY good tactical RTS game where individal soldiers with board swords, axes and bows and arrows kill each other in VERY glorious and graphic detail. Complete with plenty of blood. Rainbow six is a first person shooter that gives you that personal feeling about being there and shooting someone. I'm still not sure what your point is. I have re-read your post several times. You seem to say that CM is a GREAT simulation but you can't see the soldier's perspective and can't get a soldier's feeling of being scarred and in the line of fire? But is that necessary or desirable? As I understand it, being a commander means that you may be forced to send some men to their deaths so that many others will live, so that the battle or fire fight can be won. I good commander knows this and deals with it to WIN the battle. I'm not sure that we really need to "feel" exactly what our soldiers are feeling. I think it is a VERY good simulation and lets you play the role of a commander over about a Battalions worth of troops to accheive an objective. And CM does that (model the battlion commander) VERY well! Still wondering what is your point? just curious? -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 4. I was well aware of the state of the art, Big Time Software, mind control algorythyms programmed into CM before I left, hell the game has been quoted as "more addictive than crack" (who said that anyway?) I recieved my gold master cd the day before I left for a three week road trip, and I left the cd in my laptop the whole time and played it every opporotunity I had. Any other "undocumented features" popped up lately? -tom w
quote:
Originally posted by IntelWeenie: A bug has been found in the software that will erase any social life you once had. 5. Hi I have also just returned. But I have been away from the internet and e-mail and this board for 3 weeks. I'm doing my best to catch up on three weeks worth of posts and I all can say is that CM MUST be selling VERY well as there are ALL kinds of NEW names here I have never seen before! Can anyone suggest some the more interesting and insightful threads of the past three weeks. Any news? Any comments from Steve and Charles clearing up little things or use full tibbits of knowledge that no true CM addict should be without? What new bugs or new "undocumented features" have been discovered? any comments or replies would be a appreciated. Thanks -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 6.
quote:
Originally posted by jdmorse: Yawn...... I have looked at all the screen shots of the grids at Matt's site and like others here wonder how to make the same textures available for the Mac? I'm still only playing with all the original screen graphics, and no mods at all as I'm on a Mac. I think I prefer the original graphics and I like the 19 shades of grass colour for elevation. I think I prefer no grids lines. Although I KNOW some of my friends who do not have the game yet were looking specifically for grid lines the first time they saw the game. -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 7. Hi Tank 41 yopu say your Tac AI is dumber Well it will "react" in a dumber fashion if your men or crews have less experince. There 5 or 6 levels of experinence and there is NO doubt that more experienced crews and men fight better faster and smarter. If you are playing with anything less than "regular" men or crews at the very least the the AI that guides them may do dumb things for them and it may do it painfully slow. Experience of the crew or men in question is a BIG factor. -tom w
 8. Its called the miracle of Tac AI ! Tactical Atificial intellegence. It works the SAME for both human players and computer opponents. Many people here will tell you the AI is not really that hard to beat. OK it is sometimes hard to beat. IT is after all, VERY VERY good AI that directs the computer opponent. There are (as I understand it) 3 levels of AI and the most relevant here is the Tac AI which every unit use to keep itself out of SERIOUS trouble by instantly issuing a reverse order when a serious threat like an anti tank team is spotted half way into an order to advance. Works the same for ALL units on both sides. I truly believe Steve and Charles when they state the AI DOES not cheat. Sorry but it is just VERY high quality AI. -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 9. OK As I understand it the first run of Gold Cd went out as v1.0, the second run that are currently shipping are v1.02. If you receieved v1.0 (because you preordered) then you had to download the v1.01 patch. If I understand this sitauation correctly then those who received the (currently shipping) v1.02 do not need the v1.01 patch and the first run Gold Cd (v1.0) that was shipped upgrades (with the v1.01 patch) to be the SAME game as the v1.02 that is shipping now. Correct? That puts all of us in the same boat waiting to the new and EVEN better v1.03 patch. The release date of which seems to still be a matter of speculation. Now, I have been away for 3 weeks so this could all be wrong and I'm only now spouting my ignorance? Any other comments? -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 10. I just finished a Qucik battle where I was the allies and it was a metting engagement with ALL armour and all I got was 7 Stuarts with that crappy 37 main weapon. Most of them got chewed up really quickly but one of them on the flank fired through a light building and in ONE minute fired 4 rounds and KO'd four German tanks from 450 meters, YES (Ok they were ALL flank shots, but..) one minute of combat this little heroic tank KO'd 2 Panzer IV H's 1 StuG and 1 Panzer IV G!! It was delightful to watch. I lost the scenario to the computer but it WAS fun anyway! -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 11.
quote:
Originally posted by Airborne: The early version (Stuart) used by the Brits in North Africa was one of my favorites. This light tank, used as a main battle tank, really put it to the Italians. Still great as a recon vehicle in NW Europe. I would love to see this great game set in North Africa in 1942 around the Gazala Battles. One of my favorite tactical boardgames (remember them!) was Tobruk by AH. It would be great to create some of the scenarios from that game. ----------Chris

Hi Chris I played Tobruk TOO and just recently dusted off my copy of it and pulled it out to look at the stats and Damage Result tables to see how those numbers compared to how CM plays now. I really believe that having learned about tank and armour combat in the Africa playing Tobruk, has helped me understand how CM works and how to play it better. It has been a long time, (20 years) since we sat down and used those damn combat result tables for EVERY round that an AFV fired, but it sure was fun back then! Ever since then I have dreamt of a computer game JUST LIKE Combat Mission. -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 12. Hi Folks, I've been away from the internet and e-mail and this board for the past three weeks. (But I have been faithful to the game, the CM CD and my laptop travelled with me EVERYWHERE). What is the latest news on when the v1.03 patch is due? If anyone would care to give me a brief synopsis of the highlites and the disscusions on this board from the past three weeks I would sure thank them and challenge them to a PBEM match. (Quick battle, I prefer armour and and the Allies and a metting engagement) Thanks I have Missed you ALL! -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 13. I've been away from this board for about two weeks. Its seems that the v 1.02 release is the most current version. Is that correct? It would seem so, if all of you are waiting for the v 1.03 patch. When is it due? I'm away from my computer and will be back home for PBEM's after July 25. Thanks -tom w
quote:
Originally posted by pritzl: Ok, does anybody know what the hold-up is? 14. What is the short form for downloable scenarios if they are not DYO's? I have a Mac and have just received the game. I have updated the game to v1.01 and downloaded some operations and scenarios from Moon's web page. I have tried Apline Junction and Foggy Mountain and unzipped them but their icons don't look like the other "official" .cmb icons and the game does not recognize them in the scenario folder as real .cmb scenarios. Any one know what I'm doing wrong? (assume some form of user error here) thanks -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 15. "Why not, in addition to reduced sighting ability, make crews controllable only when in command? Otherwise, they would be controlled by the AI (which would normally have them sit nearby and try not to get shot). This simple(?) solution would allow their use in last-ditch or gap-filling situations, but would disallow the "gamey recon" tactic." OK.... just for clarity I assume you mean when the crew has an active red line to an officer or commanding unit. Otherwise the AI will take over and tell them to seek the nearest cover and hide. This suggests that those orders (hide) are SOP and that the crew doesn't have a radio. PERFECT that all sounds very reasonable to me. THEN if you can get an HQ unit or a CO within yelling distance or within the command radius so the black line turns RED then, you the player, can give them orders. (presumable so they can exit to the rear or be used for guard duty, both of which have now been concluded to be (if I am correct) NOT gamey and not objectionable) So the question for Charles is ...... "How hard will it be to code that" (i.e. Bailed crews are under AI (SOP run and hide) until they get the red line to a CO or HQ, then the player takes over) ?? I think that is a GREAT solution! (in addition to then limited spotting ability, AFTER they bail out, hopefully NOT before.) great suggestion -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 17. ok thanks for the update I wanted to "save" the 50 on the disk for doubleblind PBEMs so I was looking for some home made ones to practice on. I thouhgt those downloadable ones were DYO's because I thought that meant Design your Own, impliying they were designed to be downloaded and shared... I must have been mistaken. I ahve just applied the v1.01 patch and none of the down loadable zipped scenario's (after I unzipped them on the mac) will load. I admit user error here and figure that I'm doing something wrong. Are all those downloable scenarios on the various web sites fully compatible with the v1.01 CM the BTS as recently released? thanks again -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 18. Hi Finally it arrived. I can't wait to play some of the DYO scenarios that are posted on the web sites. Can someone here make some suggestions about which ones I should download first? ALL the games I play will be vs.the AI and I would be happy to play either side in a large tank battle. I can't wait for a GOOD large scale Armour meeting engagement type scenario. Any sugestions? Any REALLY fun or really challenging DYO scenario's with Bridges in them that I can try out? Thanks for your advice and suggestions. -tom w ------------------
quote:
"Have you thanked BTS by buying your SECOND copy of CM yet?"

 19.
quote:
Originally posted by chris talpas: Wow, My own personal thread Tom excellent news on CM! Were you also able to avoid the handling fees? Chris

Good news no fee's were charged... There is a white sticker on the Green Customs sticker that says "$5.00 Computer Software". Its seems that the postal service and Customs are just happy that it is not a dangerous substance or a gun and they let it go straight through, I suspect all of you will see the wonderful plain brown wrapper envelope in your mail boxes, it is about the size of one CD wide and 1.75 Cd's tall. The manual is LOVLY and has a nice Black and white image on the front. The GAME CD is a MAC/Win Hybrid and it is in the Front cover. Prep now by downloading some of those Design your own scenarios, from the web sites. Then download the Cm 1.01 patch now and I hope your copy comes today!
