  1. Thanks to Jeff D for this from a while ago...

“Panzerfaust” by Wolfgang Fleischer indicates maximum “effective” range for Raketenpanzerbuchse 54 & 54/1 as 150 to 180 meters. It also indicates that moving tanks were not to be engaged beyond 120 meters. Infantry targets were sometimes engaged out to an astronomical range of 1000meters (the circumstances of such an extended range engagement are not elaborated upon…presumably a “harassing fire” technique against area targets similar to the M9).

  2. kauz,

then make a specific case, and support it with facts. Telling someone it would be easy to code when you don't have a clue what is involved doesn't make your point.

Combat Mission is nOT a round based game. It was wego at one point, and is now wego AND real time. You were not here when CMBO was released, as the game was NOT based on wego tcp/ip. the game was released with NO multi-player, but was promised and delivered multi-player after the game was released. So, you are wrong there.

Saying a game is not combat mission because you didn't play it, is not an arguement, it is a closed mind. Is it a tactical wargame, yes. Can you play it single player or multi-player, yes, altho multplayer could use a feature it doesn't have for you. Were they all amde by BFC? Yes. So, it IS Combat Mission.

So, cut down on the rhetoric, make a case for your position. Battlefront has always listened to a well reasoned arguement. I know, I personally got German Rifle Grenades added to CMX1, along with many other features by making a case, list multiple sources [in the beta thread, I don't bother listing out 10 sources here, almost all times I don't even post about the change request here] Discuss, don't argue for arguement sake. You will find Steve and Charles and the crew have an open mind when you present them with facts.

  3. Add up all the players on all the ladders, how many are there? A few hundread? I even factored in each and everyone of the 200-300 had 10 buddies that players but never posted. We all know that is certainly not the case. the bottom line I am making is that BFC does understand their numbers, numbers no one outside BFC has seen.

Ok just saw you had about 300 users. Even tho some of them are duplicate users I am sure, lets us still use every single player had 10 people that didn't play but played multi-player. Lets add 200 for all other web sites. 500 users each having 10 players, 5000 multi-player users. Still a very small percentage of users.

But for making it a part of a module, I am all for. I have been lobbying for wego and multi-multi player since cmsf was in alpha code. I too would love to see it earier rather then later, but I realize the majority of players play single player. At a wargame store I go to, I know of at least 25 people who played CMBO, of which 3 tried multi-player. The number is lower then normal, I am sure, but the fact remains, the game is played by an older crowd [lots of miniature players at my local store] who have little interest in single player. I love multi-player, but not a ladder fan, i play for enjoyment. None of us are wrong, we all play the way we want to. just think that some are overly optimistic on the numbers of multi-players out there.

All that being said, I continue to lobby internally for something for the tcp/ip crowd. be it pauseable tcp/ip, wego , SOMETHING. here is to hoping I succeed.

  4. OK, for those who thing adding multiplayer in is trivial or multiplayer per side is trival, going to type this once. Unless you have coded, you have no concept on how hard it would be. Since I do have experience in this, let's see what I can come up with fast.

    1. The reason for big files, is the amount of information that must be shared. Did the Sherman see the Panther or didn't it? Multiply that times every unit seeing every other unit. Why would you send all that information? because the game has many random elements. You cannot process part on computer a and part on computer b, because you may get different results. The reason for the convulted way in cmx1 is because during testing, I found EXACTLY that. PC A killed the Panther, while PC B missed. So therefore, the data MUST be transferred.

    2. Multi-multi-player would require a server on BFC's side. Something has to record and sync the game play between multiple people. this means the price of a hefty server and band width. Since no one here would pay to play multi-player [they should have built it in the cost of the game, i hear it now] they have to try to get to breakeven point. However, is there is someone out there you has plenty of spare cash, please forward it to BFC.

    3. Coding time vs results. 2 coders, each one has X amount of hours per day. New Engine, with multiple changes even from CMSF [QB selection, temperate zones, bridges, water, how the ai handles each, etc etc. So, do we add the Panzer IV f6 with nav thingy or start on tcp/ip with pause? tcp/ip with pause takes appox 14 days to code, [guessing] 2 more weeks of testing and fixing. so one month of code time where NOTHING else is added. Is it worth the time? Would it delay the release of the game or module? What income do I live on while coding something that has no return? Or can it wait till a slow time to add in?

    4. It was in CMX1 not CMX2, you dropped it. No, it is a new engine, it wasn't put in. See above.

    5. "release the game now" "can't you give us it now and we can play while you finish" "what, you didn't include xyz, the game is flawed" Bottom line, watch what you wish for. You can't please everyone, but it is their livelyhood at risk, not yours. Since they outlived most wargame companies, again, maybe they know what they are doing? Oh that is right, BFC sold out to the military and won't be around. [Rolls eyes]

So, if you think it is nothing to add code in, and you haven't coded, then maybe think before you type. If it was easy, it would have been in already.

    Sorry for the rant.

  5. Sorry Gry, going to totally disagree with you here. Lets use 30,000 copies sold, and they see 1% play online. OK, lets multiply that by 10%, after all, you have 10 gaming buddies. Assume that every single person who plays has 10 gaming buddies and guess what, it STILL isn't that big a number.

Add in they have years of expertise in their field, marketing and sales, and that they still exist while so many others have gone the way of the dodo bird, i would surmise they indeed have a good understanding of their audience.

So, going to respectfully disagree with you here.

  6. Nox,

Still waiting for those numbers :) You didn't answer the question, do you think BFC knows how many they sold and the numbers being played? Since the players of this game tend to be older, with families and lives, I expect the amount of people playing multi-player to be less then a game like Starcraft.

As for IL2, yep, was in an squadron and we player at the higher levels. However, let's be realistic, being played 10 years later doesn't mean more sales. I already have the DVD, I don't need another one to play the game. People play the game cause they like the era and style of game. Ditto for CMBN, either people are going to like it and play, or they aren't. Multi-player isn't going to make a big difference.

However, that being said, doesn't mean I wouldn't like to have multiple players on each side. As I said, I have lobbied for that style of play for years. I will continue to do so. I just realize it may not be high on the list of things to add in asap. Do I want moveable waypoints first or multi-multi player? It is their living on the line, they do wrong, and we don't see anymore games. Since they have outlived most wargame companies, then maybe they know what they are doing?

    Rune

  7. OK, I will call you on this. Give me the numbers of people who want multi-player vs the number of people who will only play single player. While you gather the numbers, I will submit this.

BFC is a company who knows how many they sold and how the game is played. They determined the time to code, test, and recode multiplayer, and determined there are higher priorities to get in the game before multi-player.

They also know what would be required, if it was easy to code [as spoken by those who do not code, not aimed at you] it would have been in. Since it isn't then maybe, just maybe, it would NOT be easy to get in. Since Steve wanted multi-player and per side multiplayer in the game, and then lowered the priority of doing it, maybe there is a reason other then "they blew it?" [Again, not aimed at you]

Trust me, it is something I have pushed for for a long time, and will continue to do so. The rhetoric is ridiculous however.

    Eeeehhhhhh wrong.

I bet you anything a pro Korean Starcraft player could whoop anyone on these forums in a large, say battalion sized RT battle once he learns the mechanics.

Anything larger than a platoon-on-platoon battle speed is of the essence. Yes the "quality of the click" is hugely important but even if say player B is not as "tactically endowed" as player A, but still competent, if he can think significantly faster and pump out orders faster he will win.

That's what many of us don't like.

What's funny to me is all the old timers throwing out these generalizations about people who play ANYTHING ELSE other than wargames (oh the horror!) despite the fact that we're the very ones complaining that RT turns too much into a clickfest/speed contest and gives you no time to actually ENJOY watching the battle unfold. This would be largely remedied by an autopause option, though for battalion size battles I still think wego is necessary. Regardless, I will always miss (and want) the replay option. It's just FUN to watch your tank hit the other tank squarely in the right spot over and over!

If anything, now with 1-1, watching the replay would be even MORE enjoyable, since you can watch individual soldiers reloading and getting picked off. I know I enjoyed watching multiple times my squad leader shred a shrek team with his tommy from different angles ;).

I gotta admit I completely don't understand BFC's priorities. They want to "move forward" into the future with 1-1 and RT and all that jazz which is fine, yet they neglect multiplayer which is a KEY COMPONENT to any modern game (other than story based shooters, adventure games, RPGs and the like)!

  8. Port is 7023. Go to whatismyip.com to get your external ip to give to whoever you are playing. Port forward 7023 to your local ip in your router setup, it will depend on make of router. It takes all of about 5 minutes and you will not have to do it again as long as you save the settings.

  9. March, 2010, refereeing a game of soccer on a wet pitch. During game, foot slides forward, and I tear the achilles. I finish the game and go straight to the hospital. [drove myself]. Few days later, pre-surgery stress test, they find there is a problem with the heart and stent put in with another needed soon, Blood thinners given, so no ankle surgery.

March 2011, and second stant put in, on blood thinners still.

April 2011, just completed a U19 game, post game handshake [a tradition here in the states] walking off the wet pitch, when after a very audible pop [my two ARs heard it], drove self to hospital, to findI tore EVERYTHING in the ankle, including the calf muscle. [basically the scar tissue gave out and took everything with it]. Since on blood thinners, once again they will not do surgery, and I am on crutches with a large frankstein boot on my right foot for another 4 weeks. [been 2 already] I had to give up my championship final center... *Sigh*

    I HATE wet pitches.

  10. First impressions after a few attempts at the training scenario.

This is either a game I'll hate to love or a game i'll love to hate.

The game is great but I am crap at it. I am having difficulty getting used to the spotting.... Why don't the Krauts stand up and wave flags so I can shoot them rather than shooting me and disappearing... are they trying to deliberately get me angry.

That and opening up on me without warning when I am in the open... can't they at least fire a warning shot like the police.... I mean they are acting as if this is real warfare rather than just a game.

No sooner have i lined a squad up to concentrate fire on a target from behind a hedge than they hit them with artillery.

And don't get me started on that bloody 75mm anti-tank gun....

I've just realised what was wrong with the Oldies thread... we're actually all in our teens...

Its games like this that have aged us.....

    Peter.

Now look.. We made Peter growl and show his teeth. Monty had a Peter like this one, but was more khaki in color. :) Once I am done with the map on the Cobra breakout, will send to you so you can show your teeth more.

  11. I was looking at the impressions thread, and I wondered how would you do an impression of Joebob Shaw? Then I got it, it is either pulling a cat's tail to make it scream [remember, i heard Joebob sing], or find a nice mud puddle and place a stick in it.

For Emrys, just take the mud puddle let it dry and turn into dust. Almost as old as Emrys that way.

Now that you lot have the demo, remember I do have a couple scenarios for release, and am currently working on a third. these will not be released to the general public.

Pondscum, play the demo with someone... I am waiting young serf.
