  2. Well, looking back at the challenges BF faced with the fans that somewhat turned into enemies, has in the long run proven that BF made good decisions and those that tried to tear them down were unsuccessful in their vengeful actions. The game is still a masterpiece for what it is and there is plenty of us that see it for that. I am confident that we will see more come into the ranks with this new available platform as to purchasing the game. the only thing that is sad is that it has taken this long to make it available on such a platform. But then on the other hand, it has not

  3. *sigh* I do not think CM is perfect. I spent a long time pointing out the bad infantry behavior introduced with game engine 4. I even made a YouTube video about it. I then spent a few months testing new versions of the TacAI to iron out the issues. This whole devotion to find everything little thing wrong with CM contrarianism is obnoxious to the extreme and is not productive. It doesn’t help at all. If you think that there is an issue, prove it through tests. If other people do not think you are convincing, that is your fault, not theirs. And I literally just post

  5. 1. trench vs foxhole comparison was last patch but the behaviour still exists. 2. Agreed Trenches are awful 3. Id expect buildings to have a far better cover rating than foxholes in the open so as far as im concerned no surprise or problem there. Equally Foxholes in dense terrain provide great cover which is again something id expect. The reason i dont have a larger sample size there is because ive been doing such comparison tests quite a bit in cm and while there are usually some outliers in every test the small sample size is enough to give a rough idea which is enough for me. 6. Manning the Combat Mission Help Desk count? He was back a little way but near the objective for most of the game. You can see his peak cap in one of the last photos. I was just running out of men given so many were panicking and going to ground after a few seconds of combat at that point. I needed every and rifle forward. Now benpark... there's a slacker for you. I think he found some Berliner's liquor cabinet before the battle began. Granted he was probably tired after building all of central Berlin. It's actually showing off the RPG-43. And yep.

  8. And just like that it’s all over. (Just to prove that yes Volkssturm are indeed in the game. ) There isn’t much different in terms of positioning of each of the Kampfgruppe compared to my last update with a battle map image. A victory is a victory but it was damn close. I never saw the human wave assault coming towards the end to try and break into OBJ Beer. My pixeltrüppen Fallschirmjäger were panicking quite heavily after that – a second wave right behind it would have meant a contested objective and a different outcome. Virtually all of my infantry and panzers

  9. A little preamble to this taster ... I grew up in rural Dorset in the south of England where our countryside is not so different than that of Normandy (though the Cider may be a bit stronger!). So whenever I fire up CMBN and gaze upon the monotonous green of the bocage, I start to dream of my younger days spent amongst the hedgerows of my native land. Those hedgerows, mostly long gone now, were so thick that we could actually burrow our way inside and create 'dens' where no adult, or rival gang, could find us. So, with some time to spare thanks to COVID-19, I got to thinking about the bo

You can check my membership date goes back to 2000. In July, I reported a problem that CMFI would not update properly (opening up a ticket), I tried every suggestion I was given in various permutations. It still does not work. My last communication from Support (John) is more that 2 weeks ago. I am a retired software engineer and understand that some problems are really hard to solve; and solving a single customer's problem may n

  14. Probably the number one reason is not having to deal with constant requests for support related to problems introduced by mods. If a texture or sound mod introduces a problem, it is usually readily apparent what is going on. Much less so if the data under the hood is being mucked with.

    Uniform mod help

Thanks fellas, I really appreciate all the assistance! I’ll try and get educated on gimp and then take my 1st crack at the new uniforms this weekend when I have some free time. If I come across any stumpers I’ll be sure to return here😁

  18. I have mostly played CMx2. I own them all, including Afghanistan. I played a little bit of CMx1 back in the day, but nowhere near the same extent. I have been gaming since the early 80s. I am finding, as time goes on, that I am being drawn more and more to games in which the underlying board game (or miniatures) rules are still evident. For example, I play quite a bit of Field of Glory 2. For me, it is more "fun" than CMx2, whether single player or PBEM. I can't put my finger on it, but it is something to do with that old school combination of detailed rules, Action Points, terrain

  20. The problem with CM has always been that the game allows you to make interesting decisions on the scale of squads and fire teams. It's tactically relevant where the Bren gun team goes in over a 24m frontage, and it's important to know where your rifle grenades are, or who's carrying the SMG. Then, at the same time, you can have throw 1,000 troops on the map, with attached armour and air assets. It's certainly possible to micro-manage a battalion-sized force, but it takes a lot of time and mental effort to do so. That means that it can become overwhelming and intimidating due to the effort i

  21. How the hell are we meant to read this blue stuff?

  22. Odd thing in CM: when you look at shell craters, it seems all shells are delay fuzed, because those craters appear when shells are allowed to dig into the ground before exploding. But when shells hit buildings, they burst immediately upon contact, instead of penetrating. So buildings give quite a lot of cover, even against direct hits, which burst harmlessly on the roof.

In the campaign, Dutch engineers with grenade launchers also carry a second C7. e: Also about the Dutch, CV 90 air busting when firing at buildings is infuriating considering how much of their campaign is MOUT. The CV 90s could also probably using some tweaking to better conserve ammunition. I'm not sure if their crews doctrinally fire single shots or small bursts, but I feel like in SF2 they are firing like they have a 25mm bushmaster instead of their larger, more capable weapon. Finally, and someone could clarify Dutch doctrine for me, how are squads supposed to split to emp

  25. Yeah no worries, it is all good. We both feel strongly about this so a few sparks are to be expected but it was an interesting discussion. And it turns out that perhaps we don't disagree that much about the whole thing. Now tell us what is the one change you want the devs to add to the engine to put the thread back on tracks.

I don't really have time to study this in depth right now and already spent more time on this than I should have but... 1/ The whole thing is not super useful without providing the details of the test, but it is still interesting I guess. Did you just do this or is this an old test? trench troops take 90% of casualties in the first 30s of shells landing and immediately abandon the trences That seems to indicate it is an old test made when pixeltruppen just fled

  29. (Purely from a user perspective, rather than speculating about business reasons, which gets complex and non-intuitive fast) On some level it wouldn't - it would obviously allow people to use CM to model more things, and a wider selection of scenarios would become possible. On the other hand, imagine trying to discuss anything without a firm frame of reference. "How do I do x?" (and by the way, I've changed Y to be more like Z and I "fixed" A and B to be more like C). There's a chap who reviews a lot of wargames on BGG, but most of his reviews are for his own variants and "fixes". They

  30. By the way, if anyone has struggled with the scenario I need to hear your input as well. It is hard to balance a scenario properly if only people who win hands down comment. Maybe Boche is some sort of retired ninja navy seal and after his mini aar I will beef up the difficulty level or say add more mines since he didn't step on any. But maybe another person has had a different experience and spent the whole battle playing a twisted version of the Hurt Locker movie without the blast suit on and is going to scream bloody murder at the thought of me adding more mines. You feel me?

    New patch arty observation

Testers here are highly resistant to anecdote-based complaints due to repeated instances of following up on anecdotes with time-intensive controlled tests and finding either a non-issue, or results nearly opposite to that claimed in the anecdote (i.e. something claimed as happening all the time is actually statistically rare). Users are very prone to confirmation bias regarding failures and negative events. If the failure or negative event involves something where probability is a factor (like artillery casualties), not an always / never event, you really should try to set up a test to confi

  37. There's a large open map night battle scenario in the Marine module. I forget the name. Marine M1A1 HCs versus T90s. For fun I went into the editor and monkeyed with the Red AI plans. Slowed down the battle, gave T90 units overwatch protection while bounding to new positions, let the units sit in place long enough for them to start acquiring distant targets. The scenario changed dramatically from a shooting gallery for Abrams into a desperate fight for survival on Abrams part. T90 has the stuff to take on Abrams... in the right circumstances, if used correctly.

  40. There are actually people who have tried to come up with a theory of what makes a game fun. https://www.amazon.com/Theory-Game-Design-Raph-Koster/dp/1449363210 Long story short, their idea is that all games are about presenting the player with a series of meaningful decisions. If the decisions are not meaningful - important to success or failure - the game is not fun. In a racing game, decisions will be to turn left or right, and how much to accelerate or brake. In Combat Mission, it might be how to assault a hedgerow position or a village - a decision that is in itself broken

  43. Obligatory question for when this happens: have you decided whether to issue Steam keys to current customers to let them transition over to that platform? In case anyone hasn't used Steam and is wondering why - the quality of life improvement from never having to worry about installer .exes and getting automatic patching is something you'll never want to come back from.

  44. In Fortress Italy, the troops of the Herman Goering Division display the correct white Waffenfarben in Fortress Italy, but in Gustav Line and Rome to Victory bear the green Kragenspiegel of the Field Divisions. Simply, the tropical uniform in Sicily is correct for the HG Division, but the temperate uniform for Italy and Northern Italy is, I would venture to guess, ported from Battle for Normandy or Red Thunder unmodified. The cuff title is also present in FI but disappears in the later modules. This seems like a pretty quick fix - just a uniform option like Greatcoat/Camouflage/etc. that
