  1. Something of a long break between entries, but oh well, let's take a peek at the next mission. The mission is a little more sedate than the last one. The scout platoon of TF Thunder has encountered resistance from dug-in enemy infantry whilst reconnoitring along a small valley through which runs an alternate route of advance, Route Echo. Two rifle platoons from A Company have been appointed to clear the enemy out. We must sweep the enemy off the high ground along the valley and then regroup at the far end. I have an hour to complete my objectives. The enemy is known to be l

  4. Have been seeing accounts, plus the rare and blurry pic occasionally, for years, but here is a crisp clean pic of a T-34/85 (shot at Brandenburger Gate in 1945) with two different kinds of protection: one for the turret and another for the upper hull. Below pic expands when clicked. Regards, John Kettler

  5. This AG identified as a Panther. So, I guess it was an ISU. Those are all hits from a close-grouped PIV platoon under 200m away!

  7. What really? Haha it was one of my sloppiest CM playthroughs. I started by taking care of every single man with the observer beach party but when the batallion came into play I started to waste the forces and drive tanks around all over the map somewhat in flight mode. This has something to do that I indeed prefer smaller OOBs up to company level and like to focus on single situations. Yes I´m using to many quick command and not enough rest because time limits ill-trained me once to and it really showed here. I also became hungry. I guess I am prone to apply a modern mindset when it comes

  8. Have this and all other Michael´s CMBN/CMFB campaigns (Poppies, Clipper and Fields of Tears) installed now, mods incl. Same for Worghern´s Blitzkrieg mod. I´m mightily impressed I can say for sure. Have launched them all, just to see what he´d achieved. Wow! Now I´ve to decide which of these I´ll start in all seriousness. Surely takes some time, before I can give any detailed feedback.

  9. Not to worry, Elvis, Ian has posted that trick a half dozen times, and I still forget what to do every time I take screenshots!

I can't claim that as my own. i spotted someone doing it and thought the same so pinched the idea! Aye killing the opposition does tend to muck up their plans. In RL and in AI Plans Yeah time in scenarios is a personal choice. I tend to allow way more time as some players like/need that. For the tactical demi-gods who beat their enemy to a bloody pulp in quick time, aye they can do as you say and hit ceasefire once their blood lust i sated. Thanks to CMSF my play style has become way more cautious and I have a dislike of losing my pixeltruppen unnecessarily. That sounds like a

  11. Well, IRL Germans had solid trench line, occupied by minor forces. They tried to avoid massive artillery strike on their main forces and used to set them back. Soviets knew this and tried to assault 1-st trench line by surprise. In the game there is no solid trench line and player didn't get divisional artillery, looks like battle in the depth of defense. I would play like usual, slow advance, spot MG nests, call mortar fire on them. Attack on broad front, clear flanks, be aware of mines and AT guns. Assault guns should be 50m behind infantry line according to regulations.

  12. The Worst Vehicle Trades in Military History We start this update saluting @DoubleD who saw and opportunity, took it, did all he could and paid the ultimate price for what appears to be absolutely no gain. We start in the north where we left off with the PanzerIV and Panther from DoubleD's platoon advancing to swing around and strike at two T-34's gaurding Elvis' home objective - OBJ Jaegermeister. They have the cover of the building and a high wall to provide a hull down position. One of the T-34's move off to the east to try and intercept the spotted German panzers. DoubleD in the

  13. Well, it took longer than expected to put this together, but better late than never, right? My basic plan at this stage is to initially make an attack by fire from the berm, driving them up the ramps into positions where they will be hull down and able to engage the enemy static tanks and fortifications. Meanwhile, the breach team will move to the berm opening and begin looking for mines. 1st Platoon of A Company will be first through the breach. My Fire Support Team calls in the Shadow UAV. Hopefully, this will enable us to ID enemy tanks and strongpoints before my tanks g

  15. Awhile ago I stumbled across an account of this, or perhaps it was of similar American tests, I forget which. The upshot was (to the best of my recollection) the Faust's contact fuse would fail to detonate as the impact was absorbed by the mesh screen. I want to say it worked 50% of the time but my recollection is on really shaky ground here. There are other reports that claim the stand-off distance from the hull was enough to weaken the shape charge's ability to penetrate. Anyway, the 'bedsprings' on the T-34-85 in the game is more than just eye candy.

  16. @JoMc67 - interesting, I've never heard of that line. Advanced Squad Leader is as far back as I go - the notion of tiny cardboard StuG III's still brings joy to my soul. As I see it, ASL lives on as Combat Mission - how fortunate we are!

George MC, Yikes, what a crazy battle this one is. I enjoyed the heck out of it. Quite the challenge, as you are screwed if you go too fast, and you'll lose if you go too slowly. So, here are my observations and the course I took. SPOILERS * * * * * Per the briefing, I never considered the left flank (green) route. The briefing also noted that the red route had a road block, so I didn't work that one either. I split my forces into two groups, with equal amounts of BMPs to each, but more tank heavy on the far right (yellow) route. The in

  18. I am surprised this hasn't been fixed yet. The German halftrack, carrying a squad with gunner at the ready (behind his parchment paper glacis plate), travels quickly down a road. The soldiers in the rear have, at most, their heads and shoulders exposed. A tiny target, protected by a metal wall, and moving at fairly high speeds. They are suddenly engaged by small arms fire at over 100 meters, and one by one (or more) the gunner and the squad are cut to shreds....sometimes a new squad member moves to the gunner position and one by one they are eliminated. How silly. So much for an "ARMOURED" per
