  1. How did he put up with Patton assaulting an American servicemen or Bradley's childish temper tantrums all the time? He was mindful of the fact he was the boss of all these men and that he had to be responsible for his staff, which meant among many things that he had to be fair. Montgomery was an arrogant egomaniac but can you find a General for me in all of history who wasn't? Compared to the equally boisterous qualities of many of his equally famous peers Montgomery was not all that much worse in either the social or professional sense. The Press was a major factor back in 1940 and you

  2. I'd like to see a North Africa module for Fortress Italy. Most of the factions AND equipment are already there. I would like for less families, and more modules for existing families. Giving each game more stuff to play with. Not sure how this would look on the software side. From what I understand, maintaining a large number of families is a bottleneck. Hopefully, CM3 will be one family, one love. Here, here. Growing up, I was taught that Monty rescued the Allied situation in North Africa. Wavell and Auchinleck were seen as tired, dusty, and obsolete generals, that had let the situati

  3. As promised I have updated the map of the town of Ciembienne in my old scenario "Tiger by the Tail" to fit the commercial mod set. The scenario can be found via the Dropbox link below - until it has been uploaded to Bootie´s great Cmmods site. The scenario requires the CW and MG modules. The other scenario using the same map, "Seizing Ciembienne", will follow shortly. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ngy5jbqh9yi991h/MG Tiger by the Tail - commercial mods.btt?dl=0 Play the scenario - or simply use the map to make your own scenario or quick battle. 5. It has a KV-1, the first major production model of the T-34/76, the T-34/76 M43 and the T-34/85. All but the last are nasty looking critters long in the field, whereas the T-34/85s look almost brand new, are in a kind of pale olive paint scheme, rather than the typical dark green, and sport crisp clear turret markings to boot. The M43 and the T-34/85 are both too early for the 1942 period of the film, but from a treadhead gloriousness perspective, despite being anachronistic, I doubt you'll care. There are some military technical problems many of you will spot, but again, not movie breakers,

    Umlauts Commercial Buildings

Howdy folks The other day I realized that I had an almost complete mod set of commercial buildings that I´d never finished and released. So now I have brushed up the files and made it sort of ready for release. Mind you: The mod set is not as finished as I would like it to be - that is the reason why I didnt release it, when I made it three or four years ago. But I dont think I will ever get the time to fully complete it - so I have decided to release it as it is, rather than just letting it sit idle on my hard drive. I am going to make it temporarily available from Dropbox - but hopef

Infantry get exhausted as hell as it is, why do Hunt mode exhaust them so damn much? Should not Hunt mode just be the mode where they always stop at contact instead? The move options now is good, the faster the more likely they only stop briefly or not at all to fire back. But it is unrealistic that Hunt mode are that more tiring for the infantry. I would like Hunt mode to be a slower advance and where

  10. A blunder foisted on him quite a bit by London. This is what annoys me about the pop history since the effort to make Montgomery out to be the 2nd coming of Wellington is just as wrong as the efforts to depict him is a bloody moron. Market Garden came down from London, and while the details of the operation were worked out by Montgomery the operation was in fact the detritus of Churchill's administration, one the Imperial General Staff couldn't contain this time, so Monty had to work with it and unfortunately he did make things worse. It didn't really all start with him though. Unfort

    Smoke vs WP

Its been awhile since I looked at this and I only half-remember my results. It seems WP is considered 'hot' so you may see the cloud of smoke lifting off the ground somewhat before it dissipates. The other type (HC, I suppose) tends to hug the ground until it dissipates. WP is also considered 'bad stuff', if you march your infantry through a WP cloud you may get scattered injury casualties as a result. I've seen opponent forces relocate out of buildings that were hit with WP... I think. Like I said, its been a looong time since I looked at this.

  15. The one German General of the Nazi era that comes to my mind - as a man of honor - was Ludwig Beck. We would all do well to remember his courage in the face of tyranny. Too bad the British and French caved in to Hitler over the Sudetenland - there might have been no World War II in Europe...although there would have been bloody civil war in Germany as the military and Nazi's went at it. From Wikipedia: "He increasingly came to rely upon contacts with the British in the hope that London would successfully exert its influence on Hitler through threats and warnings, but he failed.

  16. Hang on my friend Aragorn2002, I have plenty of disdain for american leaders also and praise for other brits (Air Chief Tedder was brilliant!). Monty is intelligent and skilled, like you said, but he was also impossible to work with and in September 44 made one of the great military blunders of the war. Having said that, there's plenty of americans I hate more than Monty -- the air force general who refused to bomb parallel to the beaches in normandy and in operation cobra is one (what was his name?). MacArthur I detest, though mostly for his insanity in Korea. Admiral King's refusal to us

@Erwin I don't know what the reason was for the last paragraph of your message above. NATO hasn't been on the table in our discussion about Russian speaking people living in Estonia. But as you mentioned NATO; I knew that USAs promise to Russia (Gorbachev) in the '80s to never have a NATO presence close to Russia's borders wasn't going to last long as the Cold War didn't stop then but merely went into a new phase. I reckon that it probably is enough with the politics and to allow this thread to be about the film 1917.

  19. @ncc1701e ultimately every tactical problem is unique which is why the military places great store in planning. As a very rough guide to making your map an appropriate size for a company vs company engagement you need to consider what is a viable defensive frontage. To do that you need an understanding of your key weapon ranges and force structure. Taking infantry as an example - the standard effective range for modern infantry weapons is in the ballpark of 300m. If your force size is a company, it will generally have three platoons. Applying some of the principles of defence:

It depends on where you live. I lived in the Russian part of Estonia and in a little town outside of Tallinn where there were mostly Russians. But you're correct about the Estonians and their relationship with the Russians. My aunt told me once that she wasn't happy to talk to me in Russian and wanted me to speak Estonian the next time I came for a visit. But as I had the work to live among the Russians learning the Estonian language wasn't in my plans. I'm pretty sure the Russians weren't much loved in other part of central and eastern Europe. But the fact is still that I didn'

You will also find the plowed fields of Kieme and Aris modified so that the colors correspond to the Norman soil which is brown. Finally herbs come from a super mod without an owner's name and which

  25. I've joked before that BFC must have a limited list of (ahem) 'popular' wars to cover. The world is full of conflict but there's little sales potential in producing a 1979 China vs Vietnam war title or one covering the 1974 Cyprus invasion. In the past Steve had previously shown an interest in the modern Chinese army but there simply isn't a marketable 'counterfactual history' to set such a title in. I suggested the Chinese invasion of Taiwan but that got poopooed. WWII North Africa would naturally be on any short list of legitimate contenders. Wild speculation, just knowing how BFC think

  28. When setting up a prepared defense I generally try to do it in the following order: Heavy weapons, Medium weapons, Rifle platoons. Identify keyhole positions. Position heavy weapons to fire from the keyhole positions. Then build strong points around the heavy weapons (with the medium weapons and rifle platoons). CMRT scenario Fester Platz Polozk by @PanzerMike. That was a cool urban battle. I often take a few screenshots of a scenario, label them and add them to my PC screen saver slide show. In case you are not familiar here is one of @Bil Hardenberger’s excellent blog posts about that. https://battledrill.blogspot.com/2017/06/battle-technique-keyhole-firing-position.html The idea here is that you as much as possible try to position units so that they can only be fired on from a narrow angle that required the shooter to expose themselves in order to do so. 33. True. I mostly like mapping, coming up with scenario ideas and setting up defensive positions. The balancing and victory conditions part it is not my fav part. (obviously) Quick preview of Lohvynove/Logvinovo. 3500 X 2600 m. There is quite a long approach march. And the hybrid Olkhon group ready to attack, mix of DNR GRU, Russian volunteers and low quality separatists troops. Sgt.Squarehead you're going to love this, their soft factors are even worse than the Karapulka scenario. I even added a conscript for fun lol. Well except it will be at dawn, 5 am or so.

I had not played with them at all so I had no idea what their shell could do or what their rate of fire was. After this first shot I had to quickly setup a test so I had some kind of idea how long they took to reload. It turns out a little over two minutes. My plan was always to shoot and scoot and let the near by infantry pick rough targets. The orders I gave the big gun was to move forward to and face the direction of what I wanted
