  1. Here's a modification of the movie mode shader that gives it a night vision effect for those night scenarios. It's designed to be used in conjunction with the artificial brightness mode (Alt+B), so to use it all you have to do is hit Alt+B and Alt+M. Here's a link to download it right now, and I'll also upload it to the repository. DOWNLOAD A couple screenshots: Thanks to SLIM for the idea and BarbaricCo for making it known it was possible to mod the shader.

  2. In the thread on Russian doctrine in CM, we went through how the Russian attack, especially their Rifle formation branch. That method applies the principles of attrition warfare, depth, firepower, relentlessness, last man standing stuff. German doctrine on infantry attacks was entirely different. SlowLarry asked about it in the previous thread, and rather than bury an answer there, I am moving that part of the discussion to its own thread, here. Elements of German attack doctrine apply to panzer forces as well, but the focus here will be on infantry division attacks. Which may include

  3. Thought I'd dip my toe in here with an after action video. Its a medium sized, quick battle meeting engagement, I'm playing as the Germans and my opponent is playing as the American army. This is just the intro and the first few turns, more to follow as soon as I get time to edit it all together... (I'm liking the shiny new forum- embedding youtube is much easier)

    AAR: Rinaldi v. Emory

I'll gladly compile it into a .pdf then when its all said and done. Turns 72-79 (Part one): The battle inside the town rages. An attempt to panzerscheck from an orchard on the outskirts of town is thwarted by the Sherman platoons on the high ground: Moments later however, a second attempt is made by another team, this time they get a shot off - drat. The hit, which barely hits the lower hull, forces a dismount and this team is able to displace before return fire cuts them down. Meanwhile the right hook closes on that HMG position. Frustratingly, they do not toss a grenade, and return fire in

  6. Minutes 37-35 Part Two: As the two Tank Platoon HQ tanks drop off their meagre tank rider survivors, 2/2 tank rushes for the more distant farmhouses, from which no fire has yet been received. Well, until now… 2/2 squad takes a terrible beating. I’ve lost 40% of the tank riders I put on AOA 2. Won’t be repeating that mistake again! The first house is cleared, and my men approach the second, while the two T34s already stationary by the house bombard everything that moves. I try to silence the enemy guns from the last two houses with HE from the 1st Plt HQ Tank but it can’t get a bead on the

  7. Here's a scene I took from a battle between some attacking FJ and defending Canadians in CMFI. I thought it was pretty brutal. To set the stage, the FJ are assaulting from the left of the screen. They are moving through a forested area and coming into the area you see in the video, occupied by the Canadians. You may have to watch the video a few times to take it all in, Its rather short and everything happens very quickly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MKt4ACFrbM

    contact lost!

This has been brought up before and the problem with it has not changed either. Would it be reasonable behaviour for a squad that looses sight of its Lt to suddenly just stop thinking on its own? Wouldn't the leader be just as likely to drop further orders and move back towards the Lt's location? If the location where the completion of their orders placed them became dangerous wouldn't the squad leader lead his men to some nearby cover with out consulting the Lt.? The bottom line issue is the game offers us the job of being the unit commanders from the Battalion commander all the way down to

I also tried those new bump mapped shaders in CMFI demo and they have no effects? What they do is bringing down burned lights and too dark shadows on vehicles and units. Terrain?

Targeted ground is flat, shooters are slightly elevated (3 meters). Range is 250 meters. Everyone is Regular experience. If we assume that pavement offers no cover and call that 100% exposure then everything else is in comparison to that. In other words 60% exposure is the same thing as 40% cover. EDITED to add: The exposure numbers are simply how many casualties are inflicted on targets in that terrain compared to pavement, so troops in grass take 95% the number of casualties as troops on pavement, all else being equal.

  14. Actually Steve, I was responding to IanL. Arguments about who is right and who is wrong, who is telling the truth and who is lying were interesting the first few times, but at this point have become mind numbingly repetitive. This dirty little undeclared war will keep going until it has run its course and I personally have zero interest in discussing it here. But its your forum and you can set whatever rules you please.

    Terrain?

Exposure Pavement: 100% Grass: 95% Light Forest: 90% Light Forest with 2 Trees (Tree A in editor): 60% Note that these values reflect cover from bullets (specifically 7.92mm x 57mm Mauser from a MG42, if you were wondering) and may not necessarily be accurate against explosive ordnance. I'll test more tomorrow, time permitting.

  17. It's important to consider that the more variety you have with how Objectives work, the more intriguing/compelling/interesting/dynamic things can become for a human player whereas it gets increasingly difficult for an/to get an AI (scripted or otherwise) to deal with them intelligently. This has implications on scenario design. I am not sure what percentage of scenarios are designed exclusively/primarily for H2H play but I could see scenario designers limiting their creativity when it comes to Objectives based simply on the challenges/impracticalities they present when considering/scripting

    Terrain?

Yes, guys, I don't play by the numbers. I did not come to this as many of you did from traditional BGs and dice despite being old enough to. I came with the PCs (actually to ground combat much later; 2000). The chart above is not a means to calculate the odds. Rather it was a simple tool to help guide me, the player, to which terrain is best. Rough or scattered wood? Fox hole in woods or heavy building? I am a systems designer by profession. But I don't want to see CM's code or any games code. That is like seeing your spouse and your love as hormones and neurons firing in various lo

To put it mildly they often are, yes. At least you have crisp looking images, and didn't bring out the GIMP. Still, I'm growing fond of my own half-assed top-down styles. I haven't been able to grab screenshots yet, but I decided it was time to do a head count based on the latest set of turns (it turns out this town is simply crawling with Germans). Here are some musings as I inch past the halfway mark of the battle: My enemy has an entire battalion on the field, I'm convinced. The platoons destroyed earlier at either crossing were from the same company. If I had to estimate his losses, the

  22. Wait, a minute ago $55 was too expensive, now you say $55 is ok if it's on Steam ? Well, it's not going to be on Steam in the near future anyway. There are a lot of locked threads on that topic. But just because it's not on steam is no reason to deny yourself an enjoyable and absorbing game. Is it ? Hmmm, occasionally spotting "anomalies" are raised here. I've even raised a thread or two on the topic myself. But it's not "bad". The system generates some outliers that sometimes seem strange and once or twice, a bug has been found which the developers squashed. But a lot of the time, it works m

  24. "Greed" is used when someone thinks they can extort something from YOU in order to give it to THEM. Work, and the freedom to self-value your own labor, is a concept fraught with opportunity and risk. Those who are afraid of the risk take the opportunity to try to take your labor for themselves. I don't like the price of new cars. Those manufacturers are so greedy. They should cut the price in half. Back in '60, a new car cost 1/10 of what they cost today. It isn't "fair". By using terms such as "fair" and "greed", they try to impose a false morality on the marketplace, and thereby upon

    German attack doctrine in CM

What is not being understood here is that "murdering" the enemy force IS NOT the objective in war. Neutralizing the enemy force is. And no, that is not just semantics. Like Bill pointed out earlier, unless you have a massive advantage in firepower or manpower, you cannot ignore terrain in a fight, and even then doing so would be wasteful in most circumstances. In reality, all battles are won by achieving and advantage of some kind. Whether that is through troop concentration to achieve mass for assault, or bombardment reduce the enemy's ability to resist, or through maneuver to force the

  27. I started this project more than a year ago. At the time, I was playing a lot of Shock Force and was thus inspired to put some aftermarket slat armor on. Well, the slat armor didn't work out (anyone who has succeeded with that, good on you). So, I ditched the slat and just went for the general armor-less build. I thought about putting some ERA blocks on to mimic a "Black Sea" up-armored M1126 styled variant, but couldn't find any decent kits. After some digging around, I found a unit that appeared to operate slat-cage-less Strykers in Afghanistan at some point in 2009, so that is wha

I guess that I recall the early M1's and the teething problems it had during my time at Ft Hood. As far as the friend who is a Stryker computer tech, he was a 19D so I will be talking to him about some of the "stories" he has reported. After all 19D's are the redheaded stepchild of the armor and infantry community. And the tanker Master Gunners were never so forth coming with the amount of information on the rounds available to the main gun. Your wealth of informat

  29. Firstly, you are an infantryman and thus your opinion is invalid. Kidding aside however: The HEAT fusing has been adjusted to be more sensitive. It will now go off when striking pretty much anything more solid than loose mud. Same deal with the MPAT. The next step is the AMP which will allow you to "dial" a target, with either HEAT-type fusing (for killing PCs), a short of shrapnel approach (replacing cannister), airburst, or anti-building sort of thing (basically PD with a slight delay so it bursts after going through the wall. As far as Canister, it's actually pretty goo
