  2. It is a poor man's AT weapon. Modern warfare tends to be a 'come as you are' warfare because gone are the days of factories pumping out X number of tanks or aircraft per day like in WW2. Modern equipment is so complex and so expensive that it takes months to produce and will take considerable time to replace when lost. The MT-12 is a product of a mind set typical of Soviet thinking of throw nothing away, it may have use somewhere, even if it is just training reservists. In a 'Come As You Are' war, such weapons will use in third echelon units and as replacement weapons when the higher

  3. - US Army advanced night vision optics. Everything can die very, very. VERY quickly, it is absolutely vital you find the enemy before he finds you. Tanks like the Abrams and T-90AM have sophisticated optics packages that include thermal and night vision, if you can see the enemy chances are he sees you! Infantry at night are also an entirely new ball game, US forces have fancy new night vision goggles that incorporate both NV and thermal, effectively turning them into predator (Creepy huh?) , Russian and Ukrainian forces sport night vision as well but mostly only on there rifle optic

  5. not quite, though most times you can get near. Part of the appeal to me about CM is I can't control everything. I really am more of a commander issuing orders and hoping my men will follow them rather than me being every guy. If I could change one thing it would be to allow a save file to be opened in the editor and saved as a new scenario.

  7. Title pretty much says it all. Black Sea will be my first modern CM game. I've been playing CMBN/CMFI/CMRT since release, so I'm familiar with the game engine. What advice can you beta testers, Shock Force and Afghanistan players give to us who have only played WW2 CM? How should we adjust our tactics? What can we expect from all this newfangled equipment?

From an AI plan perspective think about what the AI editor will allow you to do and understand it's limitations and requirements. It cannot match the actions of a human player, and so don't try to do so. Key points about the AI editor. 16 groups is the current max available It's main action is one of movement, triggered either by the clock or the new triggers now in game (terrain objective or AI order) Different speeds of movement are available which effect the likelihood of an AI uni

  9. Well, while not in game I think it could probably kill a T-55, or T-62. Last year during the Maiden protests the protesters got a hold of some of these and put them in the barricades. I imagine that at the close ranges of a street battle it has a chance to knock out nearly anything the Ukranian government would send down the street. HEAT rounds could probably threaten tanks without ERA defenses as well. Still it is a museum piece and it doesn't look like something you move around very easily, but it can still kill people. Soviet designed armored vehicles that aren't tanks, such as BMPs,

When I was in the military as an artillery officer, at the time when I was a forward observer, I would have to make allowances while adjusting artillery fire to avoid the herds of elk and deer on the firing ranges. They ignored nearby exploding artillery rounds and on two occasions, I had to put the guns at check firing because a herd of elk walked up onto the hill that I was adjusting artillery fire on.

  12. In a nutshell, Modern infantry are far more lethal than their WW2 counterparts - in all aspects. A modern infantry squad will have high rate of fire assault rifles with impressive ranges, usually one or more LMG gunners and the standard rifleman usually will have a grenade launcher on the assault rifle. Depending on the nationality, there will be a designated marksman with a weapon to engage targets out to 800 metres. Depending on nationality, there may be a dedicated AT gunner or some other specialist weapon (like for the US Army, the XM-25 anti defilade rifle). Anyone in the squad ca

  14. dude you like that movie? That movie suuuuucked, it was stupid from the second to first scene to the last scene. And the ending was total bs, maybe if all the ss were high on LSD they would of had a better chance than what they did in the movie. Why did they just flat out WALK to the tank? And not send one guy to check it out? And why did the tank commander let the ss surround him? Total bs. I would of shot them when they were walking a single file line towards the tank. THAT was the time to shoot. Not after they completely surrounded you, and somehow no one just kept on top of the tank and pu

  16. A lot of the same basic tactics that apply to CM WW2 apply to CM Modern. You just have to remember that any unit that can be seen can be killed very quickly, including the M1 Abrams. So typically, you will spend a lot of time scouting with your infantry, UAVs just to try to figure out where the enemy forces are located. AFVs should be kept out of LOS until you have a definitive target located and a plan on how to take it out.

    sell on Steam?

There is a problem with CM multiplayer. It needs matchmaking or a lobby system. A basic lobby system where games can be seen and chat exchanged between players to set up battles would pay dividends for playability.

  19. One possibility they could choose would be a future Korean war involving the Chinese and possibly even the Russians siding with North Korea, Dense terrain, winter weather, urban combat. Korea has it all. Scenario is most likely o start with a North Korean invasion unless someone dreams up a really plausible reason for the West to invade the north (eg nuclear weapons, noocons in the White House) Or they could return to the Middle East but this time it is a genral war involving Isreal, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the Gulf States, Iran, stae sponsred groups such a

  20. Maybe in Valhalla. In this world, I don't think you will ever find a piece of software that will work perfectly in every possible situation. This includes the "software" of doctrine and training that period armies used in the real war. Yes, you do not possess perfect control over your p-troops to get them to do what you want them to do every time. But guess what, neither did the real-life leaders and commanders. In fact, we have considerably more control than our real-life equivalents who just had to trust that the behavior of their units would at least approximate their operational and tactic

  21. Guys, go watch some of ChrisND's videos and you will see that the Russians can fight the US, instead of relying on a single relatively unbalanced scenario at this point to base off all your judgement on the game. Remember this AAR is good for spectacle, it makes people come back and read and want the product through what is shown (You get to see the abrams, the bradleys, Russian tanks, all that good stuff). This isn't representative of every single scenario you are going to play. Now that that's out of the way...crush em pnzr... ...What can I say, I am a patriot!

  22. ........ Most military forces operate some sort of military dozer/excavator designed to support forward operations. In the US Army use, the M9 ACE fills this role, with broadly speaking similar mobility to the M113 APC (it does leak hydraulics pretty much constantly but that's a "lowest bidder" thing). For lighter organizations there's a family of wheeled earth movers capable of somewhat reasonable independent road marches (slow, but still capable of it). What's more reasonable is a "blade team" which is usually two of these thingies comes out, and in conjunction with either an engineer

As an example, the german NPD, a party that follows the tradition of the NSDAP (Even though they call themselve National democrats, opposed to national socialists. Otherwise they would be prohibited) only received 1.3 percent in the last federal election (You have to get at least five percent to enter parliament). Something like military parades doesn't exist in the Bundeswehr. Other militarys try to build up a fighting spi

  29. Yep, I recently had a brittle guy re-break because there was some gunplay ~ 50m behind him, i.e., just from the sounds of a nearby firefight. So you can see the advantages of trying to keep your own troops from becoming Shaken/Broken (because it's still readily feasible to rally back to OK) and really pouring it on enemy units when the opportunity presents itself; getting an enemy unit to Shaken just once is a more dramatic lasting result than getting them to Nervous 3-4 different times.

  30. The visualization below describes the morale transitions as I understand them. This isn't official, but just from observations/testing. The Red states correspond to the red borders in the UI. They are temporary but prevent any orders when present. The Yellow states correspond to the yellow borders in the UI. So the proposition is that once you're Shaken, you'll only ever be Shaken or Rattled. Once you're Broken, you'll only ever be Panicked or Broken.

  31. Continuing the T-90 vs. M1 debate, CM Black Sea is the first CM title to allow aphibious vehicle river crossing, a significant tactical advantage for the Russians imho. Regarding the huge weight difference between the tanks, are there bridges in Ukraine that could carry a T-90 weight but not a M1's? If this was the case, it would be another tactical advantage. One thing that is not modelled at this level is the fuel consumption and maintenance overheads for each tank which I imagine would give the T-90 an advantage in logistical supplies needed.

  33. One thing to be careful of is that if you blast a tank-sized hole that includes a pre-existing (in the map, not created by Blast) hole in the Bocage, there's a good chance your tanks won't be able to roll through it. I try never to hav a Blast order that might incorporate "natural" breaks.

That's right. Paraphrasing Steve (I think) : Realistic, well conceived battles are one-sided, boring affairs. An 'interesting' battle results from errors in planning or reconnaissance. Or sheer desperation. No commander ever sought an interesting battle. The list of scenarios in every CM game constitutes more or less a compendium of mistakes. Discuss.

  36. Finally, time for my obligatory useful post! Laser warning receivers apparently work versus bandwiths of the laser hitting em. This causes some neat/unintended effects. For instance, lets use the Arena system as an example. Anyone remember the Greek trials for tanks back in... 2006 I think? The Shtora system on the Russian tank was 100% mitigated by the LRF on the M1A2. It didnt detected it whatsoever. At first, this looked like it was due to the system being outright non-functional, but when you look at it it makes sense. The M1A2 has a carbon-dioxide laser rangefinder.
