Turns not saved to Outgoing Email Folder

Recommended Posts

"C:\Users\Fred\Documents\Battlefront\Combat Mission Battle for Normandy"

This is the directory path for my install.

This is a very intermittant issue, but it happens often enough to make PBEM play annoying if you have several games going. Especially when you have to replay the turn.

Because it is so random I can appreciate the difficulty with troubleshooting it. Hasnt happened to me in a few days, but I turn on the PROGMON routine when I am playing just in case I can trap something that might help.

I get the same issue, everything is fine for a few days of PBEM file transfer then for a day or so the orders file has a fit of randomly not saving to 'outgoing'. Just now I had to replay a turn 3 times to get the file to save. REALLY annoying having to load the game and place the same orders again and again.

I thought it was only happening to me in games when I was seeing the action turn after my opponent but that isn't the case, it happens randomly whether I am the 1st or 2nd viewer of the action.

I have run into the same issue as well on Windows 7.

I'm not sure if this has been noticed before or not, but,at least for me,it appears the turn is not saved in the outgoing folder if there is already a file in there with a three digits sequence, other than the normal numbering scheme,in the filename.

For example,if i have the file 'Quick Battle 001 cronus111ab 016.ema' in the outgoing folder and i'm trying to save another turn,it won't get saved.

It works just fine if i have a turn named 'Last Defense weapon42 raz atoth 025.ema' ,with only 2 digits [in weapon42]

For those finding this frustrating: it may be worth noting that Window7 itself is actually somewhat broken in its file system.

Here is one very long thread about this:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/09fd46ff-65f1-4fa7-ae2d-9f3b2644fad6

This thread is talking about the problem that you can delete a file and it doesn't show up as deleted in windows explorer till you refresh.

While this isn't exactly the same as the CMBN problem, it's hardly suprising that poor ole BFC are finding this difficult, when the OS itself is misbehaving...

The most galling thing to me about this issue is that I've been trying really hard to reproduce the problem, without the slightest success. I will try what raz's comments, though it sounds to me as quite crazy, to be honest.

So, are people still having this problem?

It still happens to me on occasion and is really annoying. Almost makes me want to stop playing the game until it is fixed.

1. After you have played your turn and you get the option to save - DO NOT save immediately, wait a few seconds (10-15) before saving.

2. If you are having this problem and use the H2HH - close H2HH before playing the turn - do step 1 above. Then only open H2HH to transfer the turn.

3. Make sure that your incoming/outgoing email folders are tidy - make sure to manually delete old turns that you are finished with.

4. Imo save game names might also be a part of the problem (as per raz-atoth - see above) - to his comments I would like to add : Do not use any of the following in your save game names - . > < ( ) [ ]

5. If you are playing a mirror game make sure that the two files have vastly different names because it seems as if the names resemble each other too closesly there is also an issue.

I cant guarantee that this will work for anyone else but I now only encounter this issue on occasion - maybe once every 8-10 turns whereas before it was almost every turn.

I am running Windows 7 32 bit and my game is custom installed to a self created games folder. I am completely patched up.

I don't think H2HH is part of the problem. I had this happen before I used H2HH and opponents of mine who don't use it have had it happen as well.

I don't even know what H2HH is

Thx

I have been having the same problem as described in this thread. I have noticed that when I go to save the game at some point the sound stops. From experience I know that the game is not saving the file correctly.

Something I noticed today was that when I alt tabbed to the desk top I had a screen with the last or previous pbem game I was playing show up briefly. It appeared to be at the point of where I had saved the previous game.

The other thing I have noticed is that when it fails to save properly, I alt tab to the desktop then to task manager. In task manager I have two versions of cmbn show up. One is not responding and the other is running. When I click to close the version not responding the second one closes as well.

I have gotten in the habit of saving the game as a saved game file and then saving it as a pbem file. It seems to work in most cases but not all.

I run the game on two different computers and have the same problem on both of them.

1st computer Windows Vista premium 64 bit

2d computer Windows 7 pro

Hmm. That's interesting. The bit about two processes, particularly so. And the sound stopping. Thanks!

Aside: do you normally alt-tab away while saving? I ask because it's been a fairly common thread among reports.

I do not normally alt tab out when saving. Some times when I go to save a file the game sound stops and crashes. That is when I alt tab to task manager. The crash does not occur every time. There are times when I go to save that it just fails to save, other times the game crashes.

I have the same problem--doesn't save about every 3-10 turns. Then I have to reload the turn, re-plot and save again--almost always saves on the second try. Extremely frustrating, and I'm glad to hear it's being worked on.

I have XP on an older computer. Had the same problem in CMSF but not so often..not a good trend. Never had it in any previous CM game.

None of the guesses about what is responsible seem to apply to my experience. My next experiment is saving every game prior to trying to save as PBEM file so I at least won't have to replot every move.

I have it too, Win7(64) with ATI card (6850). I have had it happen with and without H2HH and DB running; also when it fails the save it always succeeds the second time. I have had it happen both in scenarios and QBs. I have a question, when the turn is finished I have to click on the OK button and then click a second time which will then stop the background sound and give me a spinning "busy" circle (when the game fails to save I don't get the spinning circle at all). Is this normal?

As the file always seems to save the second time I am not quite sure how it would help to send it to BF. Would this issue appear in the BF log? Also, I have the game installed to a custom path (E drive).

I don't think it is normal. I have never seen the blue circle when ending a PBEM turn.
