      Special Upgrade 4 Tech Tips   12/27/2016

      Hi all! Now that Upgrade 4 is out and about in large quantities we have now discovered a few SNAFUs that happen out in the scary, real world that is home computing.  Fortunately the rate of problems is extremely small and so far most are easily worked around.  We've identified a few issues that have similar causes which we have clear instructions for work arounds here they are: 1.  CMRT Windows customers need to re-license their original key.  This is a result of improvements to the licensing system which CMBN, CMBS, and CMFB are already using.  To do this launch CMRT with the Upgrade and the first time enter your Engine 4 key.  Exit and then use the "Activate New Products" shortcut in your CMRT folder, then enter your Engine 3 license key.  That should do the trick. 2.  CMRT and CMBN MacOS customers have a similar situation as #2, however the "Activate New Products" is inside the Documents folder in their respective CM folders.  For CMBN you have to go through the process described above for each of your license keys.  There is no special order to follow. 3.  For CMBS and CMFB customers, you need to use the Activate New Products shortcut and enter your Upgrade 4 key.  If you launch the game and see a screen that says "LICENSE FAILURE: Base Game 4.0 is required." that is an indication you haven't yet gone through that procedure.  Provided you had a properly functioning copy before installing the Upgrade, that should be all you need to do.  If in the future you have to install from scratch on a new system you'll need to do the same procedure for both your original license key and your Upgrade 4.0 key. 4.  There's always a weird one and here it is.  A few Windows users are not getting "Activate New Products" shortcuts created during installation.  Apparently anti-virus software is preventing the installer from doing its job.  This might not be a problem right now, but it will prove to be an issue at some point in the future.  The solution is to create your own shortcut using the following steps: Disable your anti-virus software before you do anything. Go to your Desktop, right click on the Desktop itself, select NEW->SHORTCUT, use BROWSE to locate the CM EXE that you are trying to fix. The location is then written out. After it type in a single space and then paste this:

      -showui

      Click NEXT and give your new Shortcut a name (doesn't matter what). Confirm that and you're done. Double click on the new Shortcut and you should be prompted to license whatever it is you need to license. At this time we have not identified any issues that have not been worked around.  Let's hope it stays that way Steve

      Forum Reorganization   10/12/2017

      We've reorganized our Combat Mission Forums to reflect the fact that most of you are now running Engine 4 and that means you're all using the same basic code.  Because of that, there's no good reason to have the discussion about Combat Mission spread out over 5 separate sets of Forums.  There is now one General Discussion area with Tech Support and Scenario/Mod Tips sub forums.  The Family specific Tech Support Forums have been moved to a new CM2 Archives area and frozen in place. You might also notice we dropped the "x" from distinguishing between the first generation of CM games and the second.  The "x" was reluctantly adopted back in 2005 or so because at the time we had the original three CM games on European store shelves entitled CM1, CM2, and CM3 (CMBO, CMBB, and CMAK).  We didn't want to cause confusion so we added the "x".  Time has moved on and we have to, so the "x" is now gone from our public vocabulary as it has been from our private vocabulary for quite a while already.  Side note, Charles *NEVER* used the "x" so now we're all speaking the same language as him.  Which is important since he is the one programming them

NOTE!!! If you have downloaded your full copy starting mid day Wednesday (US EST) or later, there's a good chance you will not need to follow the instructions in this post. How will you know? Try licensing and if it works you're all set, if it doesn't then come back to this thread and follow the instructions for the Hotfix. By Thursday (US EST) no new customers should have to use the Hotfix.

If you have downloaded the full version of CM:BN for the Mac, you will notice that you aren't allowed to register. Murphy (you know, the guy who makes laws) apparently thought it would be hilariously funny to change a 2 digit variable in a particular file in the DRM SDK in a way that wouldn't be uncovered by our testers. And even funnier... to do it a couple of days before we made the Gold Master. I know, I know... we think Murphy is quite a character too. Love that guy.

What is the solution to this problem? A newly uploaded Hotfix for Mac users only.

The following instructions are much easier to follow than they look, but be sure to follow them carefully:

1. Download 25MB Hotfix Download from here and UNZIP it to any location you can easily find.

2. You see a new "CM Battle for Normandy" application file.

3. Right Click (or Control+Click) on the new application and select the "Show Package Contents" option. A new window will come up. Put it to one side so you won't lose track of it.

4. Go to the folder where you installed the full version of Combat Mission to on your harddrive, Right Click (or Control+Click) on the old application "CM Battle for Normandy", and select the "Show Package Contents" option. For whatever reason a new window comes up RIGHT ON TOP of the one from Step 3. Move it aside so you can see both, but make sure you know which one is which.

5. Navigate into Contents->Resources directory in both of the two application contents windows. You will notice all kinds of other stuff there and you should ignore it. What you're looking for is the "Data" and "Game Files" folders in the installed application's package contents. These folders are also in the the hotfix application, but are empty.

6. Move the "Data" and "Game Files" folders from the installed application to the hotfix application. This will replace the empty ones after you approve the move. Close up both package contents windows for both applications.

7. Move the installed application out of your CM folder, move the hotfix application into the CM folder.

8. Double click on the newly moved hotfix application and you should see the registration window. Enter your key and everything should be fine.

9. Once you are 100% up and running, but not before (in case you make a mistake!), you can throw out the older installed application file (should be about 25MB in size).

I have the game on my new Mac Book Pro as of Tuesday evening. Loaded and works. But how do I get the downloaded files to show up in the game. I have moved them to the saved games and incoming folders. But they do not show up in "saved Games" when game started. First time using a MAc and not impressed so far. Game looks great if I don't want to play against anyone.

Yes, the Mac version can play against the PC version.

The files you're downloading - are they ZIP or RAR files? If so you need to un-ZIP or unpack them before putting them in Saved Games. Where are you downloading them from?

First time using a MAc and not impressed so far. Game looks great if I don't want to play against anyone.

I play on a 2009 era MacBook Pro and CMBN(CW) plays very well ... :)

I use DropBox because PBEM files can get very large and often the email providers don't want to handle large file sizes.

I have no problem exchanging PBEM games with any PC player using DropBox and perhaps Phil is right, there's a ZIP or RAR unpacking thing going on.

If you'd like, I'd be happy to setup a DropBox share for us and try a basic scenario or QB so you can get initiated ... maybe I can actually beat somebody for a change ... :D (just kidding)

Files aren't zipped. I am so used to Windows that I am sure it is a Mac adjustment I have to get used to. Going in tomorrow for a one hour class with Apple. Going to ask about downloads and Boot Camp. I will have put CW in there to play on this machine.

When I copy the file in drop box (so different from Windows. There I just clicked on it and was asked where I want to save it) I drag it to the Downloads folder at bottom of screen. Then I drag it from there to in box folder within BN which I found in the Documents section. But when I open game there is no turn to play. Tried it in Saved Games with same result. Can't do it with email attachments either.

So hopefully, a little education will be the answer. Since this was an anniversary gift I am trying to remain positive but inside think of it as a waste of money so far. Must say, the graphics are outstanding compared to my Lenovo.

No luck. Tech thought it was an issue with the Mac game version. I get a message with a yellow triangle saying "the document "DT vs 95 001.ema" could not be opened. Combat Mission Normandy cannot open files of this sort."

Apologies in advance if I make assumptions or am repeating what you know.

1. Have you saved games while playing solo and can you find these saves in the Finder then go to Applications/ Combat Mission Battle for Normandy /Combat Mission Battle for Normandy Game Files /Saved games

If yes good, it means that aspect is working right and you have installed the game in the proper directory.

2) The games you are pulling from drop box are you installing them in the Incoming Mail folder? When they are installed in here, when you launch the game it will appear in the saved games menu. Or in your case ,should ,fingers crossed.

Directory path is Applications/ Combat Mission Battle for Normandy /Combat Mission Battle for Normandy Game Files /Incoming Email

3. Are you sure you have Commonwealth Module installed? Are the game versions compatible? With the CW module you should have a second tank icon on your start up screen.

All basic stuff but sometimes it is just the simple things that get missed I will be happy to exchange files with you if you need help in remedy of this Pain in the Butt. PM me if you need any help. I am no Guru but I have lived and made many mistakes with my Macs.

I've never heard of a problem like this, and as the game has been out for nearly a year, I'd expect I'd have heard about it before if it's a problem with the game itself. Very likely it's something easily solved. Please send me one of the files. phil@battlefront.com is the email address.

General Lee, I was able to save and then play a a solitaire campaign game so I think install is good.

Phl, I will have to wait until tomoroww, hopefully, if Apple can restart the damned computer. Tried boot camp and it became a disaster. Maybe the wife will realiz a Mac is not for Windows games....

But Gen Lee may have a point. I will have to confirm ( after Apple makes the fix) that it was a Normandy game I was uploading instead of a CW turn.

Worked fine day before upgrade, then this every-time i try to play it.

No mistake, Macgamestore carries the original Battlefront game version (unlike Apple's AppStore), there should be no difference.

It looks like an incorrect installation. Did you update to v1.11 before upgrading to 2.0?

A question for Phil - on a mac, in the scenario editor I am finding that the F2-F8 keys are not assigning AI groups for units but rather operating various mac functions such as increasing or decreasing brightness. I have tried a variety of alternatives i.e. command f2 but to no avail. I couldn't find anything in the manual or on the forums (I assume because the answer is so obvious ..)

The link to your hotfix leads to a page that says "location not found". I haven't seen anyone one else having the same issue with start up as I have. So the download/install was going fine and then I came to the activation screen, no problem, said it was successfully activated. So I tried to open the game and the Star pops up like it does when the program is about to run (mac) but nothing happens. The farthest I've been able to get was a black screen with a blue circle containing some parachutes and stars; so basically I know that it installed correctly but for some reason will not run. I have CB:BN CW & FI all one this macbook pro with no troubles. Please help me someone, the Dutch await liberation and I didn't train these 101st boys for two years to watch them sit on the sidelines....

Yikes. None of your CM installs work? Let's see what can be done about that. What version of OSX are you running?

Not really. Not many Mac apps these days use the F keys. Just one of those "once you use it" things.
