Get over the past?

Well, apparently the Krauts aren't over it yet.

Some time ago, here in sunny Southern California, I was visiting a militaria shop and a couple of young fellows drove up and parked their BMW. The California plates on the Beemer were: LSSSAH. I asked them if they were Liebstandarte fans and they said, yeah, so what if they were. Given the aura of suspicious hostility they exuded, I didn't think they were pursuing a Boy Scout Merit Badge.

I doubt California DMV had a clue about the license plates when they issued them.

I would like to be able to say that my ingeniously subtle title for the thread provoked people more than the actual news item, but unfortunately all I got was a Kiwi. God knows those have the sense of humour of a sheep, which explains their intimate connection to them, so it quite doesn't count.

You'd prefer the sheep too if your nearest neighbours were 20 million Australians.

While on vacation a few years back, I watched a Hairy Legs contest in which a bald, white guy in his early 30s got up on stage to show off his fairly hairless legs to the crowd. Each calf had a swastika tattoo on it. They let the guy participate in the contest right to the very end. And people actually cheered for him. I did not.

Yeah, you're right - he had a lot of nerve showing off fairly hairless legs in a Hairy Legs contest.

...Are they kidding?!

Even if you aren't a Nazi (or Nazi sympathizer), even if you don't dislike non-white people, even if your home isn't festooned with swasticality, even if [insert rationalization here], naming your child Adolf Hitler (even if "Hitler" is actually his middle name) is...is...stupid!

No amount of rationalizing, explaining, claiming that 'a name is just a name', screaming about freedom of speech, etc., ad libitum and ad nauseum, is going to keep that kid from getting beat up or even killed later in life because of the curse-worthy heartlessness and thoughtlessness of his parent(s).

In talking about how the British singer Gerry Dorsey adopted the stage name Englebert Humperdink (after the eponymous late-19th-/early-20th-century German composer), Eddie Izzard said: "'What shall we name our son so he does not get the @#$! kicked out of him at school?' . . . 'We shall call him Englebert!' . . . Good, that'll work."

It makes me think, too, of the bikers throughout the US who wear 'Nazi'-style helmets (i.e., styled after the German M1935 helmet), when their fathers and grandfathers may well have fought in WW2 and risked their lives and even died fighting actual 'Nazis'.

Adolescent rebellion is not restricted to the chronologically adolescent. If there were a "plague germ uniform" someone, somewhere, would be wearing it in giggling glee. One can only have sympathy for this small child with a pair of moronic parents like this.

I'd be really curious to come back in a few years and find out what "Little Adolf" has named his kids.

Some people name their kids after famous or infamous people (including religiously motivated names). Or fictional characters from various sources. Some people name their kids after their own parents. Some people name their kids after the towns they had sex in at the time the child was conceived. Some people give ridiculous names.

So what ? Don't you people think this piece of news has been inflated way out of proportion (among other such pieces of news) so you would not notice the things which are truly wrong and significant in the respective societies you live in ?

Tero, there is nothing more significant than children. Why do you hate children?

Because no one is willing to take collective responsibility any more ("its a socialist concept") it is an each-man-for-himself world that we have created. And the species advantage granted by altruism is trumped by the propaganda that no one is to be trusted and no one is to be helped, because, after all, they won't help you.

Consequently we have the new darwinian rule: In a dog eat dog world, the dog with the biggest litters, wins.
