Lars
http://www.dcexaminer.com/opinion/columns/TimothyCarney/T_Boone_Pickens_wants_your_water.html Texas oil billionaire T. Boone Pickens is about to make a killing by selling water he doesn’t own. As he does it, it will be praised as a planet-friendly wind project. After he pulls it off, the media will deride it as craven capitalism. In truth, it is one the most audacious examples of politics for profit, showing how big government helps the biggest business steal from the rest of us. The plotline behind Pickens’ water-and-wind scheme is almost too rich to believe. If it were a movie script, reviewers would dismiss it as over-the-top. I knew I smelled a rat. Dirtweasle
Hmmm, I'm suspicious of that story Lars based on what I've read about water rights over the years. Interesting though, and worth digging a bit more into it.
Lars
Texas is a different place, Dirtweasle. http://texaswater.tamu.edu/waterlaw.texas.htm And more here. http://www.citizen.org/cmep/Water/us/bulksales/texas/ 200,000 acre feet of water at $1,400 an acre foot comes to $280 million a year. Not bad when you didn't have to pay squat for the water in the first place. Beats windmills any day.
John Kettler
Lars, I've seen his commercial for wind power, but was unaware of this nasty little twist. Thanks for posting it! Regards, John Kettler
Dave H
So they're saying T. Boone Pickens may not be the greatest philanthropist since Andrew Carnegie? His fantastic plan for clean energy is no more than a cover for his larger scheme to drain the aquifer out from under the entire middle of the country? A desert from South Dakota to Texas is just what this country needs; something like a permanent Dust Bowl. How perceptive of Mr. Pickens to spot the need and act on it.
benpark
Is he related to Foghorn Leghorn?
GordJ
better you should ask some other questions: *what is Carney's relationship to Boone - a guess would be that they have some history with each other that is not being reported *why does Carney not focus on Boone's natural gas powered car plan, when it is clear that electric would be a better alternative?
