Modern Land Weapons

Recommended Posts

I'm working on a game about modern land combat and I wanted to get a reality check to make sure my assumptions are correct.

I'm looking at 5 types of attacks:

Small Arms (rifles)

Man-Portable Weapons (Rocket Launchers)

Heavy Machine Guns (.50)

Light Cannons (25mm on Bradley)

Heavy Cannons (Main tank cannons, 100mm+)

I'm thinking of 4 vehicle armor defense levels:

Light Armor (Hummer)

Medium Armor (most IFVs)

Heavy Armor (most tank armor)

Super Armor (Chobham)

Would it be true to say:

Small Arms can penetrate up to Light Armor

Man-Portable can penetrate all, but will less chance as armor increases

Heavy Machine Guns can penetrate up to Medium Armor

Light Cannons can penetrate up to Heavy Armor

Heavy Cannons can penetrate all, but less chance as armor increases

Opinions?

I realize there is always that "one in a million" shot or that "never penetrated once" situation, but what I'm looking for is the "in general" situation.

I'd suggest you might want to include light and general-purpose machine-guns, which are vastly more dangerous than rifles and vastly more numerous than HMGs.

Given that it causes most casualties in combat, it also seems odd to try to leave out indirect HE fire (mortars, rockets and tube artillery).

Then there's the modern fashion for grenade launchers and ATGWs.

Quite a lot of weapons seem to merit inclusion before HMGs get a whole category to themselves.

Take a look at the old WRG 1950-1975 or 1950-2000 rules, or GDW's "Team Yankee" or one of its derivatives, to see very successful ways of cramming the massive variety of modern weaponry into simple systems. You might also look at the draft rules for "The Sharp End" on Phil Barker's web site.

All the best,

John.

I'm not sure about the 'heavy armor' category. Is it only for the T72s? In the NATO arsenal the next step from the IFV would be the Chobham unless I'm mistaken.

HMGs can't penetrate IFV armor, but would penetrate 'APC armor', like on the BTR or BRDM series.

In addition to indirect fire mentioned earlier you should include (given your scope) mines, remotely command detonated ordnance and suicide attacks.

Small Arms can penetrate up to Light Armor

Medium armour too. 60's-70's era BTR/M-113 class IFV's without add-on armour will be easily damaged by HV small arms rounds.
