I can agree with a lot of good points in this thread, however a few thoughts.

1) I do feel that AI is one of the most important aspects of any computer game. I can play solitare (both sides) as well, but it is nice to be able to have "an opponent with it's own plan" without having to find one and the time to play the game for the two or more of us.

2) AI that just increases speed of production or amount of damage inflicted as the measure of degree of difficulty is meaningless. What we need is an AI that can put out reasonable attack and defend strategies and reasonably react to the opponents moves.

3) I want AI to be challenging. (Of course not so challenging that I can't beat it)

4) I agree with justanotherwargamer that we are a long way off from an AI that can perform like a live opponent, and it may be no claim to fame to beat the AI. But that doesn't mean that I don't consider a great AI as being a needed and important factor for players like me.
