Moon
In cooperation with Hussar Games, Battlefront.com is thrilled to release 1848, a turn based strategy game for the PC. In a unique and exciting twist however, 1848, the full and complete version, is available to the gaming public, TOTALLY FREE! 1848 - GAME BACKGROUND 1848, is set during the violent era of the Hungarian Independence War of 1848-49. 1848 was a year of revolutions. Most of the uprisings were crushed quickly, but Hungary was an exception. In the spring of 1849 the Hungarian army seized victory from the Austrians and liberated the entire nation but victory was short and sweet - in the summer the Tsar of Russia intervened with 200,000 troops. In history, this force could not be stopped. The player of 1848 has a chance to change history... The game was sponsored by the Hungarian Ministry of Education and the Hungarian version was released for the anniversary of 1848 in March 2005. It was a huge success in Hungary: in a country of 10 million people, the game had more then 100,000 downloads. The free fully localized English version, published by Battlefront.com, includes a number of changes and refinements (e.g. an overhauled graphical interface) and bug fixes (e.g. an important fix to TCP/IP play). 1848 - GAME FEATURES * Full Game is FREE TO THE PUBLIC * Turn based strategy 1 turn = 1 week * The game takes place in Central Europe in the Carpathian basin, within the borders of the Austrian Empire * Large resolution (4000x2600 pixel) map, based on contemporary maps of the region * 14 different unit types including Infantry, Militia, Cuirassiera, Hussaras, Cossacks, Siege Artillery and more * 3 nations: Hungary, Austria and Russia * 100 generals, many with authentic historical portraits * Authentic period music * Dynamic weather system * Easy-to-use intuitive interface * Multiplayer support via Play By Email, LAN (TCP/IP), and Hotseat Grab the full game (70 Megabytes) from any of the sites listed here: http://www.battlefront.com/products/1848/download.html

Retributar
The game will be probably good!,...however i really have a personal disconnect with that particular war at that particular time period!. Replaying the American Civil War would be 100X more appealing to me than playing the 'Hungarian Independence War'. The only game from Hungary that i liked a lot was 'IMPERIUM GALACTICA II - ALLIANCES'.
kossuth
Lovely lovley But the link in battlefront links to the T-72 Demo, and that is much LESS intresting than the war of liberation

jon_j_rambo
I'll try some Euro stuff, but prefer U.S. Civil War as my relatives were involved on both sides.
Guest Mike
Oddly enough a lot of ppl outside the USA find the ACW somewhat less interesting. Including me, even though I spent a week walking around Gettysburg and bought hundreds of $$'s worth of books when I was there in 82! I don't know anyone who has a personal connection to it, however I do know somone who is of Hungarian ancestry and they are certainly interested in this! I think the complaints about the subject matter are small-minded - it is written by people for whom is is intersting, they're giving it away for free, and there are a gazillion games about the ACW out there already!!! Timskorn
It's not really odd. The reason ACW games aren't made much anymore is because the only real market for them is in the US, and even that's small. I'm dying for a new ACW game. The last fun one I played was Sid Meier's Gettysburg...but we need a grand strategy ACW game! A good one! I'll definitely give this game a shot though once I have more free time.

Dave G.
I second the motion for a new grand strategic game on the American Civil War. As the direct descendant of a Union soldier who died during the conflict, I have a strong interest in the history of those years. However, I think it would be a difficult game to put together since any competent armchair general would be able to mop up the Confederacy. Grant showed that the troops, equipment and supplies were sufficient to get the job done. What was lacking were Generals worthy of their armies. Fubarno
Just a thought.... Write some letters to the American Ministry of Education (do we have one?) and tell them what the Hungarian couterpart did. Maybe they'll do a version of the ACW for education purposes.
Yohan
I think Frank Hunter will be doing another ACW strategy game over at Matrix if he ever finishes the Napoleonic and WWI games he is developing now...

Leader of the revolution, sometimes he visits your troops in the game and you get morale bonuses. Fantastic game by the way.

"The game was sponsored by the Hungarian Ministry of Education and the hungarian version was released for the anniversary of 1848 in March 2005. We are releasing then english version for free to promote our next game, For Liberty!" This was in the FAQ's of the game. Nothing is ever really for "free" -there is always a monentary gain some where. This was just a "demo" to get us to buy their ACW game. So wouldn't hold my breath for our government to release a ACW any time soon.
