Biltong's Campaign Rules - South 41 to 42

Recommended Posts

Alright I got a question... The casualties setting in Biltaid or in BCR spreadsheets at all - does this apply to your task force or globally to your company as well? If it only applies to the task forces how do you simulate this in a battle?

And WTF am I supposed to do when I get ordered to a 1000 pt. assault and end up with about 1 platoon of troops total and 1 tank?! With 40% ammo?? Well I pressed on and was cautious... major defeat because I refused to take anymore trenches or move on beyond a treeline, I destroyed several BT tanks and a couple of guns, and already those goddamn reds started counterattacking...

Next battle, counterattack, I get again about 1 platoon of forces, with 1 HMG, and 1 tank!! ARGHHH! I played it out... 1000 point Allied assault! Allied forces +75% Soviet high quality guards troops (ouch ouch ouch)

Oh my god.. everyone except my CO got killed. Everyone. 200 something Soviet casualties though, and somehow this was computed to a draw. (hey I was happy) but still it didnt seem like a draw cuz unless the troops that werent there arent counted, everyone is dead except my co and a couple of guys in his squad...

Edited cuz this is hard enough to read now, dont even picture it before..

Oh, <sniff>, I get a mention. March is not mid - way. Has to someone else in 42 by now! Hey I've got bogged down in the Russian Spring Offensive, so I won't reach May - June anytime soon.

Biltong - Probs with 42.

-No Rules for replacements between the months of Jan - May. (I've been using June - August ones for the hell of it).

-Those Date Modifiers suck. Haven't used em.

(Sorry).

-Pure Armour Battles are impossible for what armour we get in 42. AI will always buy T34's and KV's. Thats just me. Plus it's unrealistic in my opinion.

-Trucks and Kubelwagons. Whats the point it's impossible for them to increase there experience except by replacements, and they can only go down in experience when they are forced to bail out. I say ditch em, just more units to worry about. :(

-In regards to favour, going through and seeing if an enemy mortar is abandoned or KO'ed is very annoying! Same with tanks etc. Make it easier and it will attract more people.

-Give some favour for killing inf. I say 1 Favour pt for every 50 enemy casulties. I just held off an enemy human wave with two platoons! I should get some credit from my superiors!

-Lots of the fields are obvously blank. I'll see what I cn dig up in my history books. (Again).

-Wouldn't have a clue how you propose to run those big battles. Stalingrad etc. Would like to know smile.gif

-Yeah thats all I can think of right now. Keep up the good work.

Oh what do I have to worry about? Full time student doing a double major at Uni, part time job, vice prez of a Liberal Club, on two commitees at work, on the commitee for my social minature wargaming club. Man lucky I have no kids! smile.gif

To all the men of the 3rd platoon of Herr Rausch's company.

Well done at holding off a human wave attack of battlion strength. We'll show these reds who is superior and we'll all be hme by Christmas.

+++++Situation.

Forward deployment in open field. 3rd platoon (Luckily at full strength and full ammo), with the Company CO are situated in a trench with a Bunker MG to cover a flag in a small patch of trees on the Russian Steppe.

Entire Red Force of conscript infantary charge forward with light tanks and tankettes in support. The men of the third platoon and the Company CO held them back for ten minutes of game time. With the enemy only 50 metres from the trench line the men of the third platoon who had already by now suffered an artillery bombardment, was luck with the timely arrival of the battle groups tank platoons and the first platoon who race forward in support of there comrades.

Some kills

Company CO - 48

Squad 3 - 74.

WELL DONE MEN!

My thoughts exactly. You could calculate favor simply using the numbers in the AAR. Not as fancy and detailed, but a whole lot simpler. It's just a matter of specifying a multiplier on each value, e.g. 0.02 for each enemy casualty as suggested above, then add them up and round the value.

It could be an optional favor calculation.

You have to know when to fight and when to run. Ending up with an all Green core group is going to hurt you for a long while so preserve your guys and if the situation is impossible just get off and swallow the favor loss.

Biltong and other guys, who stand behind this opus magna!

Some time ago i played Wreck's original campaign rules and liked them. But yesterday I downloaded the PDFs (i am a Mac user), and wanted to play some nice quickie campaign, opened the Rules file and...

...whoa, 17 pages! This was just too much for me. I understand CMBB itself is huge, all the options and variables, and real life stuff you have brought in it, but 17 pages... I just didn't have so much time to do this.

Anyway, to my question: is there any way (perhaps i missed it) to automate the rules at least partially? Some excel spreadsheets with formulas and random number generators? Perhaps some Java applet? If it's not here yet, is it planned to bring something like it to life?

Thanks and respect for your dedication.

Edgars,

I'm developing a fully automated Biltong rules utility (there is also a fully automated emergency reorganization phase) under Visual Basic.

Unfortunately, as Biltong already knows  , I am able to develop it only for Win XP, 1024x768 resolution screen, monitor over 15".

The program keeps track of all parameters from battle to battle of a campaign, such as experience of all units, depleted units, attached units, favor, days to be spent in city fight.

This utility works fine on my computer. If you want to use it at your own risk and the risk of your computer, I can send it when it is completed. (remember only for Win XP, monitor>=17")

Heya edgars. Your multifaceted question has one answer: YES. From Biltong site you may have Excell spreadsheet, auto-gen parameter facility (again excell if I am not wrong) and the Java tool Biltaid.

I am using this last and am delighted (or is that due to the fact that I am on a Mac? :D )

Zig - what's their names - then I can give them priority... about another 3? days before it's your turn again. smile.gif Busy with the Kiev pack now - decided to cut it down drastically because of time constraints, so things should sped up a bit.

Let's have some more AAR's - very curious to hear how the 2 player concept works smile.gif

BTW - How are you guys handling the various parameters such as Task Force?

I dont believe I made a mistake, I rolled up the parameters in Biltaid, set everything to unrestricted, so the only mistake I could have made would be the answer to my original question, because I set the battle with 50% casualties on... That was the question I was asking in the first place - Does the casualty modifier you roll up for your task force also apply to your troops in the battlegroup? If not, what do I do to simulate the task force casualtys? Cut out 40% of the forces or 50% or whatever I roll when the battle starts?

Im not exactly sure what the official ruling is on this, but what I always do and what seems to make the most sense to me is to just keep it at 1 then.

I always do this when it tells me to subtract a number greater than what I have, i.e. subtract 6 from 2, I drop it to one and keep it there.

If its adding, i.e. 4 to 7, I just put it at 10 and keep it there. Otherwise its just addition or subtraction

Hope this helps

Edited becuz the mind works in funny ways

Oh, thanks.

I downloaded it, but... how do you launch a Java applet on a Mac? Is it possible to launch it under OS 9? I rebooted in X, found an app "Aplet Launcher" but none of the files found in a folder did anything.

It is a sad day for the German Army. Herr Rausch was ambushed in the rear lines and killed by a roving recon squad in thick fog. Well my CO's dead so now I'm really bogged down in March 1942. I personally dislike the officer replacement rules. I mean I think a Company Captain would know how to fight and would't be a conscript off the street. So Lt. Horten of my 1st Platoon has been given the honour leading the company. Now known as "Horten's Men." Herr Rausch who had served since Barbarossa had led his men through some great victories and through the winter of 41. Famous for his lame jokes and one liners, his bullet riddled body was retrieved from his Kubelwagon and sent home to Germany for burial.

BCR, :( You get really attached to your men. :(
