Are the battles real enough

Recommended Posts

Having played CMBB for a while now and seeing some parts of battles last for up to 1/2 an hour is this realistic when you compare it to other 'realistic' war games such as operation flashpoint[ofp] where a firefight is over within 5-10 minutes.

So would a firefight last as long as it does on CMBB or would the 5-10 minutes of games such as OFP be more real?

Even though CMBB scenarios are 20-60 minutes long, it is very rare that any individual units will be in action for the entire time. If you look at any scenario you are playing, you will see that most infantry and AFV's will shoot off most of their ammo in about 5-10 minute of continuous firing.

Regarding the time compression, the player has a level of information and command and control which was unavailable to any WWII commander and even surpasses the internet command system used by U.S. forces presently in the Gulf.

We also have the luxury of being able to take all the time we want between turns, something which real life commanders did not have. Because of that CMBB battles are faster and better coordinated than they would have been in real life.

In Real Life, a platoon might be ordered to sneak up to a patch of woods to observe a farm building. Doing so takes them five minutes. They spot a hidden enemy unit there, e.g. a machinegun. All this is covered to a certain degree by the simulation, although the time it takes is far more predictable. Nobody gets lost, no one trips over a tree root, etc.

Now, in CM you as the company/battalion commander get this info immediately and your decision is immediately, too, in game time at least.

In reality, someone has get the information to HQ, by means of a runner or radio. The commander then takes some time to decide on the best course of action and relays his decision to the platoon.

How long does all this take? It can be a matter of seconds - Hollywood style - or it can take much longer, even hours. Perhaps you want to reaffirm the report (not neccessary in CM) or have more important matters do care about (none in CM, you can take all the time you need). All these uncertainties and delays *could* be somehow simulated, but the game wouldn't be as much fun to play as it is now.

operation flashpoint's a first-person shooter simulating squad-level combat

as others have noted, equivalent-sized units in CMBB - a squad, vehicle, crew-served weapon, etc - rarely actually fights for longer than that in a given scenario

AMEN! Brother.

CMBB walks the fine line between "fun" and "realism" like no other game. (And at a reasonable price too).
