"If War Comes Tomorrow" antedates "Sacred War"

Recommended Posts

Watched a Russian language (English subtitles) movie YT called "Lieutenant" but is really "Lieutenant Suvorov" and is pretty good. In the film are young orphans who are a choir, and from them I got exposed to a new Soviet war song., first done in 1938. As one commenter pointedly noted, "They can't say they weren't warned," referring to the Germans. You'll understand why when you see the lyrics. Here are two different versions sung by men, one with powerhouse choral singing and but a still up throughout, the other a solo with lots of crisp clear pics tied to whatever the lyrics are talking about. By contrast, the lyrics to "Sacred War" were published June 24, 1941, after which the music was done so fast that the first performance was given June 26, 1941. How many times did the Red Army soldiers hear and maybe see "If War Comes Tomorrow" by the time  OPERATION BAGRATION began?!

One of my CoC colleagues posted the film itself. Unfortunately, there are no English subtitles, but oh, the visuals!  This is a grand tour of the Inter War and Early War RKKA, a film where  a great deal can be learned simply by paying attention. For example, it's clear that by 1938, when the Russians were already using tankodesantniki, not just for infantry mounted by squads and and half squads but specially configured tankettes to carry the Maxim externally for near instant retrieval as soon as the tankette stopped and the MG crew of four leapt to the ground, grabbed the MG and went racing off dragging the gun, with the ammo bearer trailing slightly behind. Speaking of Maxims, there's a brief sequence showing Maxim armed tchankas thundering across the steppe, quite the juxtaposition with the sea of AFVs, not to mention huge amounts of cavalry, a gigantic airborne drop and infantry attacking in full chemical warfare kit from the period.
