Tal Malah

Recommended Posts

This scenario is based upon reports I have seen regarding the ongoing battles around Tal Malah.

Feedback is appreciated. I had to drop the tactical image from the file, as it made it too big to upload. This is my first attempt at a fully fleshed out scenario from scratch. Hope you enjoy!

Respectfully,

LL

Awesome - new scenarios are only good. Your file allocation here on the forum is crazy small so you probably will not be able to upload another one even. May I suggest you look at an alternative. Dropbox is ok for some testing and back and forth but not good once the scenario is ready to be distributed. Once you are done definatly post to the scenario depot: http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/tsd3/

An alternative during testing is the proving grounds: http://www.thefewgoodmen.com/tpg2/

Dropbox for most flexible file shares, TinyPic for screens and a BFC thread (this one i.e) for recruiting playtesters. IMO TPG2 (the proving grounds version 2) is far less suited to attract playtesters as that boards name implies. Better remain at BFC boards for the many many more players around here and easier responding. B)

Just started it and as a suggestion I would recommend having a map in the briefing to give you some idea of your enemy's disposition and/or give the attacker more intelligence. If you're attacking, your artillery more or less has to be used on the first turn.

My impression is he intends to do that but that made the file too big to attach to the post. I am presuming that a final version would include it and by hosted in an appropriate place...

Indeed, Thank you Ian. Also, the Strategic image that loads up with the text briefing is an image of the mapped area on google maps. I just put in a few simple graphics to roughly illustrate where everyone will be.

Also, I'm wondering if giving the Takfiris an RQ11 wouldn't be a bad idea. Playing as blue vs the AI seems to give the AI a bit of trouble. Maybe I just need to dial in their orders better.

Update: I've been pretty heavily medicated the last few days, but I'm doing better now, so I'm working on an expanded version of this map that extends it out about 500-600m N-S and E-W. I really appreciate the feedback and people downloading and trying my scenario. I'll get dropbox going soon for future files, too. Thank you all.

preety good man, ive been thinking of modding some of that area aswell.... looks great keep it up!

Thank you very much. Creating these maps is definitely a labor of love. Reminds me a lot of building models and dioramas as a kid.

To spice up everyone's Friday, I have the Blue Defend version of Qasabiyeh on dropbox:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/z6ywn4wqz34ycpy/Qasabiyah - Blue Defend.btt?dl=0

The map is 1200 x 1120 and pits a company of Tiger Force troops against a large Takfiri attack force. I'll work on a Blue Assault version in the coming days. Hope you all enjoy.

Update: Based upon great feedback, I swapped out some of the SAA units in the Qasabiyeh scenario. The Special Forces troops and T-90 have been replaced by Republican Guard mech units and T-72AV. Also, the salafists have been beefed up. The download link in the post above is still valid, it now points to the new file.

By far the best single player scenario  (the Qasabiyeh one) that I have played! I usually don't bother with single player scenarios and prefer multiplayer.

I am glad that you took my advice and replaced Special Forces with Republican Guard, makes the logistic side slightly easier (rearming your RPG's and PKM's while repelling a jihadi wave truly is a unique challenge!). So far, the lack of digital fire control system on T 72 AV has not proven to be an issue, most engagement were point blank or artillery like engagement on a point target. This unit composition should be left as is, it presents you with some hard choices.

I think everyone should try this out. To see a jihadi wave developing while technicals armed with ZU-23's and SPG 9's hang back in support, ready to snipe your units on one flank and a mechanized push through your lines on the other, truly is a sight to behold (and try to stop)!

That's very high praise gentlemen. Thank you. I really appreciate the support.

I made another pass at the Tal Malah map that's seemed to improve things a bit:

I added a lot of micro-elevations and raised the hill a bit compared to the surrounding landscape.

I worked on the Red AI plan a bit to have some of the techs hang back and just lob stuff into town like they tend to do.

I swapped out the Specs Ops guys for Republican Guard mech, but I left the T-90 (I think it kinda helps) and changed the deploy zones a little

The dropbox link for Tal Malah (Tal Meleh in google maps) in this thread points to the new file, but here's the link again to save you time:

Many thanks gentlemen. I really appreciate you guys. Here's a few shots from my current project, Kabani, which is approaching terrain completion. It's a tiny town in the hills on the border of Latakia and Hama provinces. It's 1760 x 1520. It should be ready to test in the coming days.

Classy work sir.....One tip that you might find advantageous is to 'Ditchlock' the elevation of building clusters to the same level.  This ensures that flat roofs are flat and that internal doors are always useable etc.  Sometimes this may mean modifying your contours in a slightly inauthentic way, but I'll take 100% playability over 100% accuracy every time.

Finding a system that works for you is a matter of trial & error and it can be time consuming, but it does reduce the risk of the 'zombie-pixeltruppen-march-of-death', even for the imbecile AI.

When using multiple modular buildings to create a bigger structure I always use the same skin & window types on all modules, to help the player perceive it as a single larger structure.

HTH, keep up the good work!  B)

Thank you, sir! I appreciate the ditch-lock tip. I work on building facades and connectivity once the terrain elements are fully laid down, so that part hasn't been done yet. I agree with the 100% accuracy part. There's some areas which simple cannot be replicated easily, such as large boulders sitting in middle of nowhere and other ice age remnant type terrain.

Hello all,

Here's the Meeting Engagement scenario based upon my newest map.

The town is Kabani, located on the border of Latakia and Hama Provinces. It's a small agricultural community that's recently been the site of some fighting between HTS et al, and the SAA. The Salafists stalled the SAA drive into Latakia province at the beginning of the month in this town. The map is 1760 x 1520. It should be playable from both sides, but Blue seems to be the greater challenge.

Here's the dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k1j80k7qsy3iadi/Kabani - Meeting Engagement.btt?dl=0

If Aurelius finds a way to break it; I'll update the file, and this thread, so the dropbox link will stay the same.

*Note: The Tal Malah map at the very top of the thread is the old 1.0 version. The file, because of how it was posted, cannot be updated and I can't edit the post. The most updated version of Tal Malah is in this thread as a dropbox link and also here.

Respectfully,

LL

The mountains in summertime are a special place. Since I can't do our usual camping and outdoorsy stuff this year, I thought I'd go to the mountains anyway...

Here's a couple of screenshots of my current map project:

The town is Attera, near the Turkish border. It's approaching completion.
