Spotting rounds ?

Recommended Posts

One question about spotting rounds. I have understood that the FO need to see them to adjust the accuracy of the fire mission. But, is it only see or can he adjust by hearing something?

I am asking the question because playing CMBN, I had a HQ team at 352m from the target. HQ has a perfect LOS on the target. A 60mm mortar (with radio link) has no LOS on the target. Two of the spotting rounds were completely off target behind hedgerows. And, I am sure HQ had no LOS on where these spotting rounds fall.

Still I did see these rounds approaching from the target. Thus, I had the impression the sound of the rounds did play a role.

If he doesn't see them he will still attempt to adjust fire until he does, although this signifies that unless he gets lucky you're still probably looking at a few more minutes of spotting before he's on target. It helps when they see their own fire to be sure.

Something to keep in mind is that "precision" barrages are difficult affairs to manage with the technology of the time. It can be done, but it'll take longer to walk the fire into the target if it's a small target. For weapon crews this is reasonable enough, they're not going anywhere soon. If you want fire fast though trade off some accuracy and you'll see that you can have more fire missions in less time.

My worst experience came when I had spotting rounds landing behind my FO. I quickly hit "Cease Fire" before he got hit.

Mine was it actually hitting him.  :P  Only once but it was funny as hell.  "splash over"...… "Splash out"....."Splash over"...…  " I said splash over"...…. "Hey you still need arty?"... "hello?"
