Breaching and Cover system

Recommended Posts

... quick Q.... if you breach through a solid building wall (doors and windows disappear) ... is that wall considered completely removed for infantry cover?  Or does it have some diminished cover bonus instead as the graphics would seem to indicate...

Thnx, Boz

My experience with CMx4 would say "Yes", to some extent. They still seem to provide concealment for sure, though adequate cover from direct fire not so much. I've collapsed entire buildings with infantry on the first floor, blown entire floors to shreds and still not seen the infantry on that floor until my pixeltruppen got too close. However exposed soldiers don't seem to survive so long once detected.

The cool thing about this game is how so much of the mechanics are hidden.

The frustrating thing about this game is how so much of the mechanics are hidden.

The only way to tell would be to run 100 to 1,000 tests of a three-walled structure (set it up like that in the editor) vs. the same target and shooter with a structure with the wall demolished.

After 1,000 iterations of each (remember, same-same for all tests: shooters and targets), you'll have an idea.

Let us know. ;)

Another simpler way might be to just pay attention to what happens to bullets as they hit a half demolished wall. Do some of them bounce off, like they do against an intact wall? If so, that would be at least an indication that there's probably some protection offered.

Could be contrasted to what happens when you remove a wall completely in the editor.

I can't prove it but i'm pretty sure that walls will in fact deflect "low power" rounds like SMG and pistol ammunition better than lighter structures. Some of those churches in Battle for Normandy seemed near unassailable with small arms fire and I would frequently find myself needing to bring up a tank or engineers to reduce them. These days if I see that one is in the objective zone I am most definitely assigning a Division or Corp gun to it. I'll take my chances with The Almighty...
