Erwin got me thinking with this post:

My only deep desire is for a CM:Afrika Korps game.  I know BF has been disinterested in that idea.  But, it always seemed to be a very popular topic with the wargamers I used to know.

So, instead of derailing the RT Bones thread with a question there, I figured I'd start a new conversation to pass some time.

If BF put a gun to our head and made us choose between Afrika Korps or Early War Europe, which would you choose? And why?

My response- "are you freakin kidding me?  With all the possibilities you give me those 2 options?"

My preferences -

1. CM Afghanistan remade in CM 4.0 with both the USSR Era and the current war represented

2. Fulda Gap

3. Mid East war 67/73.

However given only those two choices - early war.  Desert is boring - especially the maps.  Much rather have the Fall of France.  Stonne as a campaign game!!!!!!

The early war kit is more interesting imo, and i find the desert terrain too similar for prolonged interest. North Africa is better suited to Ops level actions or higher. Early war is much better suited to CM's scale.

Just my 2p

Edit to add I'll take Fulda over anything else BF could offer

First guess was answer Early War, not often covered in wargames and it sounds fun first to think about playing with late WW1 stuff but thinking about it, there is a reason why its not so often covered. There are not that my sophisticated Weapons systems - especially tanks - for the nations specifically the Germans. Scenario-wise also difficult, French didn´t put up much of a fight, Poland was not capable doing so while being attacked by two major powers. The annexation stuff that happened before the invasion of Poland as also the later invasion of Norway are not that relevant from CM´s perspective.

Operation Barbarossa is scenario-wise interesting but there wouldn´t be much for us to see. Russian wise there is stuff to add, I would certainly be excited to see soviet KV1/2´s. However for the Germans there would be absolutely nothing new to discover equipment-wise, except for older versions of known vehicles. Better to be left in Red Thunder.

I must admit I am not that interested in Afrika Korps but this theatre have seen many known commanders, operations, tank battles, on par equipment used against each other, fierce fighting and shifting fronts, many nations participating there. Especially for the Allies there would have the option to introduce many vehicles not seen in the CM European Theatres like the different Crusader tanks. Furthermore lets not forget that we would see completely different terrain sets in a Afrika CM giving the seasoned CM player some visual but also tactical variety (open fields, infantry may be better traversing contested space mounted etc.)

So in conclusion the choice for me is easy: definitely Afrika Korps

Early war all the way, no contest. It easily trumps Fulda Gap for me too.

Light tanks, tankettes, armoured cars - AT rifles actually a threat, "doorknocker" 37mm AT guns, outmanoevering ( having to do so ) French Chars ( although they'd be half-blind ), British Matilda 1's and 2's, trying to knock out Matilda 2's with PzIV 75mm HE gun, rubbish air support - Fairey Battles bombing miles off target

( and you could use most of that equipment to do early desert war too, so there ... B) )

LMAO! You guys are so predictable. We made it to one answer before it devolved into off topic wars.

P.S. Come to think of it, Fulda Gap does sound like a German porn actress.

I see nothing wrong with any of this. ;)

For me, to answer the original question, I would much rather have Early War over Afrika Corps. I really want CM: Barbarossa. The early war Eastern Front is very interesting to me, and I would love a CM game that covers that time period. I'm much less enthusiastic about an early war Western Front, but that's just me. Either West or East, there would be a lot of fun new toys to play with.

Now for my obligatory broken record post on Fulda Gap:

I would much rather have Fulda Gap than either Afrika Corps or Early War, but that is just because of my fanatical interest in the Cold War. Plus, who doesn't want to re-create some of the missions from World in Conflict in CM?

+1 YESSS!!!  :D:lol::)

But seriously out of the two choices probably North Africa.  I would buy both North Africa or early war Europe however I pick North Africa for practical reasons.  With the content Battlefront has already made in CMFI and the desert terrain in CMSF I think (could be wrong) North Africa would be the easiest for Battlefront to produce so maybe more likely that they would create CM North Africa.

PS - Since @IICptMillerII brought it up.  I think early war in the east (just the east) is even more likely.  Battlefront has posted about working back in time on the eastern front.

No love for North German Plain rather then Fulda?! Heresy! Call it CM: BAOR.

But, given the choices I'd also say Early War. It's a relatively uncovered part of tactical wargaming and poses unique (I think) tactical dilemmas for the under gunned Germans.

Yeah, we'll see early Eastern Front. That's been the message from the beginning at least. And Steve (Charles too?) is an Ost Front junkie, so...

Actually Fulda Gap is just a generic term.  What is the first campaign I'd like to see done in CM... errrr….. Group of Soviet Forces Germany - would be First Clash on the Canadian 4th Mech Bde Grp.  :D

Love that book

The CMSF base game was released on July 27 2007.  The Black Sea Battlepack was released on April 25 2017. So in roughly 10 years we had an additional 5 base games, 6 modules, 1 Vehicle pack  2 Battlepacks and 3 major Engine upgrades.  What's been announced for sure? CMSF 2 (which I'll call a new game),  the last CMFI module, except for possibly an elite forces module,  and another module for CMRT, CMBS and CMFB.  At the same pace of release in the next 10 years (after which I suspect Steve and Charles will be ready to retire) we'd expect to see another 7 more Game or module releases plus odds and ends. Say CMBS, CMFB and Red Thunder get another (2nd) module. That about leaves only enough time for the East Front 1943 to be covered along with the odds and ends. So it looks doubtful to me if we will ever see either early war or North Africa. This is not meant to be a big downer, as that's still a hell of a lot of content, and yes Steve might be laughing his butt off after reading this attempt at prognostication since only he and Charles, I would think, really know what's going on, but I thought I'd offer this assessment.

If BFC put a gun to my head, they'd find themselves having an early morning appointment with my Axeman on a scaffold outside Whitehall Palace. And that would be a great shame, as they wouldn't then be able to go on to produce such interesting games.

Now to answer your question, I'd love to see an Early War game western or eastern front.

I doubt they'd do either one. It was just a question I thought of after Erwin's post. If they did consider them. I'd rather see everything completed first before seeing either of those, to be honest.

FB should be done (outside of any packs) after one more release. FI will be done (barring any packs) after this next release. SF2 will be done with one release. That will free up some space right there. So, that leaves RT and BS. But my guess is they'll have to do a fresh title, because not everyone is into modern or the Eastern Front. What it could be is a mystery.

Africa or early war? Both.

Barbarossa: Would flip the game on it's head with the Germans being the ones on the major offensive rather than the usual Allies vs German defenders set up we have now. Not to mention Axis minor nations.

Africa: Well I want to see Australian forces eventually. :P

In my mind at least Africa could work well with the family/module system except you'd work back wards through time rather than forwards like we see now with CM2 titles:

1. Base Game - Operation Torch to Tunisia focused. Nov 1942 - May 1943. US, German, Italian forces. (Maybe Vichy French?) I'm also assuming the US forces first policy would be continued.

2. Module - El Alemein. Time-frame extends back to June 1942. Commonwealth Forces to cover the famous battles in Egypt and the Mareth Line.

3. Module - Early war Africa. Time-frame extends back to cover 1940 and 1941 in the desert. Tobruk, Crusader etc.

4. Module - The Balkans, Greece and Crete. Considering the Commonwealth shipped forces from Africa seems like a nice fit.

Meh, we can all dream. :D
