Two official (U & UK) on tank Normandy and thereafter

Brother George informed me of the first, and I found the second. Had some pointed words on pricing regarding the letter.

Data on World War II Tank Engagements: Involving the U.S. Third and Fourth Armored Divisions Paperback – February 18, 2012

Looks promising. Have read BRL reports in the past. The people there don't mess around. This one also looks interesting, but I've decided that it was hand lettered in gold and embellishes with rubies, given the price! $100 for 52 pages!

A Survey of Tank Warfare in Europe from D-Day to 12 August 1944: Army Operational Research Group (AORG) Memorandum No. C6 Paperback – January 10, 2012

$99.95, with used copies at the same price!

The BRL report was a first trawl through evidently extensive tank engagement data scattered through vast amounts of records. The Look inside for the first is a travesty: cover, table of contents, two pages with nothing but a single colophon and one page with two photos!  By contrast, the second Look Inside is actually useful, in that the sample is long enough to provide a two pages of the Abstract. From it, we learn the average long range engagement was 1200 yards and the average short range engagement was at 400 yards. Roughly on par with the OR conclusion regarding ASW from aircraft that clean perspex resulted in more sub spottings, thus, kills is one in the AORG in which the cosmic revelation is made that British tanks sustained more losses in open country!

Going directly to the original source material, in this case, can spare you a lot of money.

Look here:

Both studies by Major G. Gee and Major J.M. Murdoch Mitcheson published 1946 and 1952 downloadable as pdf thanks to the Laurier Archives.

cheers
