kevinkin
https://phys.org/news/2017-06-cyber-boost-navy-power.html If anyone has an ongoing interest in programming, please be aware of this emerging development environment. "By applying Popcorn Linux to longtime, legacy Navy and Marine Corps computer systems, we can improve software without requiring thousands of man-hours to rewrite millions of lines of code," said Dr. Wen Masters, head of ONR's C4ISR Department. "This could yield significant savings in maintenance costs."
A Canadian Cat
Sounds very interesting. I imagine that the experts are not being bamboozled by the oversold headline:-) Moving a complex program from one operating system to another is not a free activity. Having said that the project and concept is likely a good way to modernize important systems.
kevinkin
Yeah ... it caught my eye for military entertainment software too. We now have huge databases (subsets of the military of course) that would require many man-hours to use with ever evolving hardware and operating systems. May not be a panacea, but something to rule in-or-out as project concepts are developed. I know developers love to have a large tool box.
