Tiger 1's combat debut & how the Red Army captured Tiger 100

Recommended Posts

Was checking a claim that the British have the only operational Tiger 1 in the world when this delight popped up in my results. James Tseliki did an immense amount of research, including the Kubinka Archives, to put together the story of the earliest days of the Tiger 1 in combat and the remarkable story of how the Russians unexpectedly captured Tiger 100, BN 502 CO Major Barker's command tank, via a really gutsy move. Turns out the story of how they got it is not at all what's commonly reported. He wrote a simply tremendous post that was ultimately all about modeling the beast, whose turret looks decidedly odd. For all you treadheads, enjoy--after lamenting the complete disappearance of the tank from Kubinka and no real info on what happened to it!

The Soviet 85mm & 122mm tank guns are almost certainly what happened to it.....The Soviets had no time whatsoever for the Tiger and used captured examples as range targets to test their new toys.....While I believe this image is probably 121, I strongly suspect it also demonstrates the fate of 100.

Andy,

121 most definitely was employed as above, resulting in "Aim here" instructions to the troops, while 100 was used (see original article) as a propaganda showpiece, evidenced by the photo of Stalin in front of it. Still lack any account of how the Russians recovered Tiger 100 right under the Germans' nose.
