Special Upgrade 4 Tech Tips   12/27/2016

Hi all! Now that Upgrade 4 is out and about in large quantities we have now discovered a few SNAFUs that happen out in the scary, real world that is home computing.  Fortunately the rate of problems is extremely small and so far most are easily worked around.  We've identified a few issues that have similar causes which we have clear instructions for work arounds here they are: 1.  CMRT Windows customers need to re-license their original key.  This is a result of improvements to the licensing system which CMBN, CMBS, and CMFB are already using.  To do this launch CMRT with the Upgrade and the first time enter your Engine 4 key.  Exit and then use the "Activate New Products" shortcut in your CMRT folder, then enter your Engine 3 license key.  That should do the trick. 2.  CMRT and CMBN MacOS customers have a similar situation as #2, however the "Activate New Products" is inside the Documents folder in their respective CM folders.  For CMBN you have to go through the process described above for each of your license keys.  There is no special order to follow. 3.  For CMBS and CMFB customers, you need to use the Activate New Products shortcut and enter your Upgrade 4 key.  If you launch the game and see a screen that says "LICENSE FAILURE: Base Game 4.0 is required." that is an indication you haven't yet gone through that procedure.  Provided you had a properly functioning copy before installing the Upgrade, that should be all you need to do.  If in the future you have to install from scratch on a new system you'll need to do the same procedure for both your original license key and your Upgrade 4.0 key. 4.  There's always a weird one and here it is.  A few Windows users are not getting "Activate New Products" shortcuts created during installation.  Apparently anti-virus software is preventing the installer from doing its job.  This might not be a problem right now, but it will prove to be an issue at some point in the future.  The solution is to create your own shortcut using the following steps: Disable your anti-virus software before you do anything. Go to your Desktop, right click on the Desktop itself, select NEW->SHORTCUT, use BROWSE to locate the CM EXE that you are trying to fix. The location is then written out. After it type in a single space and then paste this:

      -showui

Click NEXT and give your new Shortcut a name (doesn't matter what). Confirm that and you're done. Double click on the new Shortcut and you should be prompted to license whatever it is you need to license. At this time we have not identified any issues that have not been worked around.  Let's hope it stays that way Steve

      Forum Reorganization   10/12/2017

We've reorganized our Combat Mission Forums to reflect the fact that most of you are now running Engine 4 and that means you're all using the same basic code.  Because of that, there's no good reason to have the discussion about Combat Mission spread out over 5 separate sets of Forums.  There is now one General Discussion area with Tech Support and Scenario/Mod Tips sub forums.  The Family specific Tech Support Forums have been moved to a new CM2 Archives area and frozen in place. You might also notice we dropped the "x" from distinguishing between the first generation of CM games and the second.  The "x" was reluctantly adopted back in 2005 or so because at the time we had the original three CM games on European store shelves entitled CM1, CM2, and CM3 (CMBO, CMBB, and CMAK).  We didn't want to cause confusion so we added the "x".  Time has moved on and we have to, so the "x" is now gone from our public vocabulary as it has been from our private vocabulary for quite a while already.  Side note, Charles *NEVER* used the "x" so now we're all speaking the same language as him.  Which is important since he is the one programming them

Moving on:

MorningAfterTheNightBefore_zpsi8paejim.j

Quite a lot of remodelling to do before CTS can continue their push to the Tigris.....There won't be much of Ramadi left in this section of the map at all when I'm done, but I'll be using LLF's block-building technique to create the new scenery.

In this one there are lots of big compounds (wish I knew what they were).

Been busy trying to finish off all the other uncompleted CMSF and CMA games I started.  I reckon I put more playing time in than most here.  And now suffering from my regular bout of CM burn-out.  :(

There seem to be so few people playing any particular title these days.  Hence my comments to you about burning out the few of us here with repeated testing.  My next one when I get my mojo back was going to be "Action & Reaction".  Is the above one "Wicked Wednesday"?  That's on the list, no worries...

Leave 'Action & Reaction' for a bit, it's going back on the workbench for upgrading to Mosul standards.  ;)

When you are ready drop me a PM and give this one a go, I'm still fiddling with the VPs, but it's tricky to explain why without giving major spoilers.

Ok...  Then next I think will be the 2nd "Copper Mines" scenario which looks a lot better than the first ("Riots").

It's amazing/shocking how much time is liberated when I don't play CM2!!   Actually getting productive things accomplished!!!

(Like seeing "Wonder Woman" in IMAX 3D later today, B4 "The Mummy" takes over the theatre.)   B)

Actually, what scenarios are newly available in CMA and CMSF??  Am getting the impression that you started one, then left it incomplete and started another, then left that incomplete and now are starting some more...  It's getting confusing trying to figure out which ones are ready for primetime...

'Ashsh al-Dababir' (The Hornets' Nest) is the most advanced, it's in the very final stages of testing, basically fine-tuning the VPs.....MOS & sburke are kindly testing this for me at the moment, I await their AARs to see how I did with the VPs issue.  I've just started work on the second scenario, but don't expect much more than teaser images for a month or two.

One issue is really perplexing me, the time in 'Ashsh al-Dababir' is set to 16:45hrs.....Why does the automatically generated scenario cover always show 01:30hrs?

It is the mission length i.e. an hour and a half.

Gotcha.....Don't I feel dumb now!

To be fair in CM:A (my main area of interest truth be told) the mission start time is shown there:

HeistCover_zpshf9xthcw.jpg

You should give CM:A a try dude.....Maybe download the demo?  I could use the company, that's for sure.  ;)

I find that getting rid of unnecessary folders like MY DOCUMENTS and MS WORD etc really helps...

SS:  So... The Heist is complete and ready for play?

Drive E?  You can never have too many drives!  ;)

Erwin, I've PMed you.  B)

lol I hear that. I have a dedicated drive for CM installs and another drive for all the mod files, scenarios etc etc so they don't tie up space if I am not actually currently using them   ?

Did you run through the revised version of 'Ashsh al-Dababir' in the end.....I'd be interested to know if the VPs changed any?  (I'd be interested to see your final turn from 'The Heist 'when you have a minute too.)

No worries fella, as and when.....TBH I think I'm probably done with that variant (unless MOS or yourself discover something hideous that I missed) and I will move on to other things (Abdul Gul's War for CM:A) for a bit (I'll will be adding a block at a time to Mosul Mini-Map #2, but doing more than that in each sitting sends my eyeballs wibbly!  ).

It seems things are going OK in final tests, I'd really like to thank those of you who've taken time to test this for me.....I really can't tell you how hard it is to self-test a scenario full of tricks and surprises!  ;)

The final phase seems to have begun, CTS are still in there:

It also seems that CTS have managed to avoid the excesses currently attributed to the ERD and Shia militias.....This makes me very happy indeed.  :)

The Mosul battle seems to be quite hard on tanks, this is one seriously bashed looking Abrams:

This T-55 has seen better days too (this shot is actually from a district just to the east of the territory covered in 'Ashsh al-Dababir'):

Then, there's this:

PS - @LongLeftFlank I think I just found my Cover-Shot for 'The Crusher';)

Interesting article here:  https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/26/world/middleeast/mosul-iraq-isis.html

Quote

This was not the mission that American military commanders envisioned for the counterterrorism service when they established it after the United States invasion in 2003. The force’s original mission was to conduct lightning raids against terrorists and insurgents.

“The CTS has made enormous sacrifices since 2014, and many of the old hand are dead, killed in Anbar Province and elsewhere,” said David M. Witty, a retired colonel with the United States Army Special Forces and former adviser to the counterterrorism service, known as CTS.

Very much backs up Combatintman's earlier statements about the misemployment of CTS.....What I hadn't realised is that these were the very same guys who cleared up parts of Ramadi.  :o

Here's one for LLF:

And the same guys who cleared up parts of Fallujah ... kind of ironic that you're using a modified Ramadi map to do Mosul don't you think ...;)

A couple of other quotes from that article to note:

'There were no advisers from the American-led coalition in sight' (just like I said).

'A small team, with mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles, was monitoring the fight from Yarmouk' (use of MRAPs ... just like I said).

Let's be honest fella, the degree of synchronicity has been quite high throughout the design process.....Which is lucky really because as you know, I didn't have a clue where I was going at the start.

All things considered I think it turned out OK.  ;)
