Getting closer!  At least this weekend's testing round was not followed up by testers using a stinking poo edmodocon :D  First time since we started, so that's a good sign we're in the final stretch now.

Ahh, modern software testing/feedback cycles have an interesting change in language it seems...

Great to hear Steve that you're seeing the beginning of the end:)

Er... um... (very tentatively) I have just finished reading Matthew Parker's book on Monte Cassino.  I have got the CMFI Cassino campaign all lined up and ready to play, but dare not begin it for fear that the new engine will arrive when I am half way through it.  Oh, golly gosh, um... what I'm trying to say to you awfully nice and absolutely terrific Battlefront chappies is that it will be really incredibly super-duper once you have released the new engine  because I am longing to give CMFI, that underplayed diamond in the rough of a game, a really good testing.

Tootle pip!

SLR

That's huge!  Kudos on the breakthrough.  Hopefully, any remaining issues remain trivial or cosmetic.  Good luck to the team.  Thanks for your efforts.

Thanks!

The key problem is that CMFI covers a huge amount of time.  That means a lot of equipment phasing in and out.  With the extension of the time period (Rome to Victory) this has become an even longer stretch.  Add to this peculiarities specific to the Italian front which differ from other fronts.  The original CMFI TO&E was not designed to handle this sort of stress, if you will.  Gustav Line was a brute force way around some of the problems, which wasn't pretty on our end of things.  We subsequently made significant changes to the game code to handle things better (which CMBN, CMFB, and CMRT will all benefit from), but those changes couldn't be retroactive to the existing CMFI/GL TO&E with the wave of a magic wand.  Hence 3+ months of reworking of the TO&E :D

This is an example of where wargame customers and wargame makers sometimes find themselves having different perspectives.  Making lists of what is what might seem easy and straight forward, but it isn't :D  Especially when the TO&E database has grown to include several hundred thousands of pieces of data.  Any one of which can rain on someone's parade.  Yeah, it's a monster.

Great news. Fingers crossed there's some juicy module/content news right behind it. :) Keen to jump back to Italy with gusto.

Can I add that there are some people in the test group whose comprehensive knowledge of unit organizations and equipment I am in awe of. Add Battlefront's perseverance to really get it right and it makes a good combination :-)  .

Great news Steve, and thanks at you and your team for your hard work, I'm waiting for upload FI to 4.0v since December, but I'm little confused, is this meaning that next module will come together with upgrade? (It would be really great).

The Engine 4 Upgrade is coming out on its own.  You will get yours no problem :D  The Rome to Victory Module will come out later.  The thing is that integrating the new Module's TO&E into the old TO&E was pretty ugly.  It was one of the reasons why we had to rebuild all the original TO&E.  Now the old and new TO&E play nice together :D

Nah, it's a pretty good looking step-sister, but she should have ditched the 1980s big hair and leg warmers long ago :D

A little background...

The TO&E for CMFI was originally based on the TO&E code and details found in CMBN v1.x.  With Engine 2 we made major changes to the TO&E coding to improve lots of things, in particular uniforms.  Since CMFI started out as Engine 2, the two games were effectively the same to you guys.  What happened after that, though, started a divergence.  The CMBN TO&E was improved so that it could be readily adapted to CMRT.  In the process we fixed things with the original CMBN TO&E that were in error, inconsistent, or using older techniques.  Those changes automatically applied to CMBN, not to CMFI.  CMRT was released with Engine 3.  Next we made CMFB, which again was based on CMBN/CMRT TO&E as a starting point.  Again, when problems were found with the original TO&E we made changes.  Those changes automatically applied to CMBN, CMRT, and CMFB, not CMFI.

When we started making Upgrade 4 for CMFI we were initially going to smooth out a couple of specific issues (like Flamethrowers) and call it good.  However, we were already working on CMFI's 2nd Module (Rome to Victory) and were already converting the CMFI TO&E to be in synch with CMBN, CMRT, and CMFB in terms of structures and coding.  We were originally going to have the totally overhauled TO&E made available when Rome To Victory was released.  Then we thought it would be better to role it out right away with Engine 4's new release, though we didn't have time to do that as Christmas came upon us.  It was the right thing to do, however I wildly underestimated how long it would take to make the conversions and have the issues shaken out by our testers.

Which brings us to today :D

The fun thing is that for a while CMFI will have the best, most up-to-date TO&E of all WW2 CM games.  Because inevitably we found things along the way that required fixes which apply to CMBN/CMRT/CMFB.  We'll be putting out patches for the other games to bring them up to the same standards, but maybe we should let CMFI customers have some bragging rights for wee bit of time :D

Starting to sound like the Italian Campaign itself, tough old gut...

So who the heck is left at BF? I would have hoped for an expanding staff or pool of talent not a shrinking one... I have zero info other than reading that thread... who knows what really goes on "behind the scenes" at Battlefront.
