Updating Shock Force

Recommended Posts

I found some recent information (10-12-2016) about the updating of CMSF in a different thread.  It had been awhile since I heard anything and I was starting to wonder if it would ever happen.  It sounds like Shock Force will be updated.  It is just a question of when.  Below is the link.

I stumbled over this post. And i just had to wave my flag also.. to get @Battlefront.com attention. Hell @MOS:96B2P just showed me how to link the profile names and shout at people. So I'm giving it a spin :)  and make people aware of the NEED.

Oh ...................... what have I done..............    :)

I have to say it - but this forum, and actually not just SF but all the other CM, are full of life and cool characters. Thank you all guys.. its a really gloomy day here in the Mediterranean island, and so i have every excuse to stay indoors. and play. PLAY? Actually - making very important tactical decisions that can cost lives... of pixeltruppen.

Yeah... that is 'partially' true. Temp rarely falls below 15'C here., and cold is never a major issue... but when it decides to rain - oh boy it rains.

Shouldn't we talk more of CMSF2 ? :) I think - @Combatintman would be the ideal person to create a 'soldiers of benghazi' scenario. Two lovely compounds.. the private CIA complex, and the embassy. If OBL rocked... this came later, and shocked us all - not in a nice way. I had a blast playing 'Zawiya uprising'

"Zawiya Uprising" was an XNT campaign!  Maybe my favorite Red on Red campaign as the mix of units was very interesting, the maps were all good and had continuation... and it was fun.

For a stand alone CMSF scenario my all-time favorite is "UK Mud Marines".  Very large xnt map and lots of variety of units and challenges.  Highly recommend anyone interested to take a look. (Requires the Brits of course.)

While "Benghazi" may be interesting it would be small.  I still am hoping for "Mosul".  The RAMADI map would be perfect to adapt or use as is.  These towns are all mostly the same apart from a few landmarks perhaps.

The Scenario 'Consulate Evacuation' was in part inspired by the Benghazi incident.  If you want to go into a city in chaos, rescue civilians and escort them out of the city to a helicopter extraction point this might interest you.  (There are actual unarmed civilians in this one.  Although they do have the ability to buddy aid a weapon and use it).

I will have to take a look at the 'Zawiya Uprising'.  I keep seeing comments about it every once in awhile.

Thanks MOS, i must have missed that one.. let me dl asap..

These real-life / inspired scenarios are my favourite...

Libya although seemingly quite now, is sprawling with uncon- and con-. + special forces boots on the ground activity. It must be a CM editor / developer festival if one had to tamper in it. Tripoli, Bayda, the VERY WELL KNOWN Sirte, Bani Walid, and more.

this just keeps on getting better and better.

Its amazing how after all these years.. CMSF may get some love on its way...

I simply can't imagine what it would be like hitting the desert, sand, and CQB in those small villages in a CMSFII environment.

i also just REALISED, its my 400th post :)

If CMSF will be upgraded to CMx2 version4, some units will need updates as well. Here's one from Nato module:

That is a modern upgrade. Granted things are subject to change, but I would not expect to see CMBS period variants. The setting for CMSF is 2008.

DO u think the scope would remain strictly Syria invasion ? Or will the plot widen a bit ? Afghanistan and wadi areas would be a thrill to have. Plus mountainous terrains. Also.... would BFC keep this strictly under wraps and come out when close to ready, or will they start teasing in bits ? How does it work ?

What @sburke said is totally correct. But come on this is basic logic stuff :) . CMSF is a pretty big family with multiple modules and some unique features (spys, IEDs etc.). One huge issue is going to be simple compatibility of all the user content that has been created (just getting the actual files that exist to load correctly). Then there is the whole how much effort do you expend to ensure that the older scenarios play well. The list of work just piles up as far as the eye can see - just to get what they already created working well and playable. Then people ask "can we have x, y and z new stuff". It's all good. All good ideas. All very tempting. How much work is there to do again? I think we can all do that math and come to the same conclusion - while no one but Steve knows for sure: "don't hold your breath for a bunch of new things - cause you might die".

Let's see which lion BFC is. >:)

I think compatibility with old content would be nice, but not necessary - if old and new CMSF can be installed in same computer. If compatibility becomes too time consuming, just play old scenarios with old CMSF version. What I'd like to see all the existing units working with latest engine. Then we'd have proper QBs, maybe Syrians that can split squads and other improvements.

To me, this is all why a CMSF reboot should be by way of a CMBS arid terrain + Uncons "forces expansion pack" (focus on units, not content).  Upgrading CMSF itself wouldn't deliver sales justifying the effort in my view, however much it might delight the few fedaykin here. The world has moved on.

Such a module could also offer 200x/Client forces kit options to allow the community to recreate fights from Iraq and Astan, as well as any old fave scenarios from the CMSF mythos. While with a few tweaks, NATO task forces can likewise find their way into the 201x Slavic/Caucasian brushfire wars of CMBS.

I know BFC has rejected the "sandbox" concept generally, but this seems like a solid way to recycle an existing investment - in both CMSF/CMA and CMBS - with limited incremental effort.  And what alternative direction is there for CMBS?
