Wargame. Doctor's orders!

Recommended Posts

No, this is not some weird and wonderful fantasy. This is what my marvelous doctor, who is aware I play CM in its various forms, told me today to do (though he initially thought I was talking about the Xbox type stuff, which I'm not allowed to play because it hurts my head). This is over and above an instruction from him to write as much as possible. Both are part of an ongoing effort to rewire my brain following a TBI four years ago whose downstream cognitive effects are now dramatically worse than they were in 2013. Back then, I was far more productive on the writing front and vastly more functional on the CM front. Presently, I haven't generally been able to summon the requisite combination of energy, focus and the complex neural activity necessary to play CM. Not sure how I'll do this, considering I last played CM months ago, but my doctor says I must!

StieliAlpha and Badger73,

Believe it or not (Tiny QB on Large map; am horribly rusty), I'm complying, but the medicine is bitter. Still, I'm finally playing again after being unable to at all for something like four months!

Please allow me a foolish question.  What's the "Design Load" difference on the player between the Modern and WW2 Combat Mission games?  I only own and play CMBN and CMFI.  Command & Control = C2.  When I wore US issued baggy green outerwear, the doctrine was 3CI; Command, Control, Communications, and Intelligence.  I've been out of uniform a long time but now see mention of "C4I2" – Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, & Interoperability as well as "C5I" – Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Collaboration and Intelligence.

That said, would CMBN be of less taxing complexity but provide more effective longer duration cognitive activities for John's purposes?  I guess I'm asking whether CMBN/FI/RT/FB are simpler mouse traps with which to tinker than CMSF/Afghan/BS?

Badger73,

Did I miss the mission brief? Could've sworn you and I played CMBS, since I recall a knockdown drag out fight Red on Red in which I had T-90AMs, a BMP-3M and an MTLB-M. I had to end our barely born Forever War when you decided you wanted to play much bigger games (battalion level) than I could handle.

You may well be onto something with your point about CMBN (which I have complete to date) and CMFB (which I've yet to play at all) as being less demanding on my rather battered brain. Appreciate your suggestion.

Took some doing, but I found this minor brain stretcher again. Say hello to NLOS. 4100. Pretty good, since it made my head hurt. Some of the targets are practically invisible, too, making them easy to miss seeing and targeting them.

Michael Emrys,

Got your PM and hadn't heard of either game you mentioned. While I'm certainly capable of playing division level wargames, I find the CM type experience far more appealing.

Dear John,

I'm sorry to say you misremember your well enjoyed CMBS game.  I only own the CMBN and CMFI game families.  I do not own or play CMBS.  You and I have never played each other.  I wish I could take credit for your fond memories though.  The only thing you can blame me for is the anonymous gift receipt for the "CM BfN & CW Bundle" you received 7/23/2012 when constrained by fixed income and under disability.  Enough time has elapsed for you to resolve that mystery.  I'm glad you've kept it up to date.  Go now, play it, and enjoy!  Good luck and good gaming.

And what a wonderful beneficence it was and is! I owe several people CMBN PBEMs, a list to which I shall certainly add you so we may take each other's martial measure.

Still baffled over the Badger-CMBS connection, I went digging using "forever" as the search term. That's how I discovered I had you confused with BadgerDog. An identification error for which I do apologize.  Our CMBS clash is detailed below. When you read the battle accounts, do you hear those Black Sea sirens calling out to you?

StieliAlpha and Badger73,

Though I'm late taking my medicine, I believe you'll find the delayed intake worth the wait. I did. Sort of.

The next turn did not go at all well, for I got my needle threaded! The unfortunate Bradley started out in a kind of bowl and was doing the Hunt/Reverse drill for the second time when this happened.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ksz77uppywayu05/Screenshot 2016-07-16 19.09.30.png?dl=0

And the cause?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/opwtmmm392kmwuv/Screenshot 2016-07-16 19.10.54.png?dl=0

This was when a crisis of command ensued, for at a stroke, aggregate losses went to a horrifying 40%.

But before things fell apart with his fellow Bradley situated in the woods to his right and well forward, Del Rio and his crew enjoyed the fine sight of the sun rising over the steppe.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/hagdme25l45cu0z/Screenshot 2016-07-16 19.24.45.png?dl=0

It starts with the Abrams racing into position, as smoke billows where a fully functional Bradley and crew once were. The Abrams gets lased.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/2lk6e2vvwvrb65z/Screenshot 2016-07-16 19.42.06.png?dl=0

Ivan goes after Del Rio's track, and the LWR squawks. This is why I love Hunt. Using the terrain as much as possible, Del Rio went wide left early in the turn, then Hunted forward, with a Reverse planned. That's how he was able to do this! The Bradley slams to a halt upon target detection, a fire order is snapped out, whereupon a TOW 2B blasts from the launcher pod and streaks toward the offending tank.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ihivxeowwpjocpf/Screenshot 2016-07-16 19.47.09.png?dl=0

Things are pretty hairy! Both my only remaining Bradley and half of my surviving Abrams tanks have been lit up.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/42af318pv9ays04/Screenshot 2016-07-16 19.48.16.png?dl=0

Worse, the tank has now been positively IDed as the dreaded T-90AM, and it is shooting at my woefully inadequately armored Bradley!

https://www.dropbox.com/s/8huczzwnaloq2ku/Screenshot 2016-07-16 19.52.53.png?dl=0

Based on what I know of TOW 2B, this should be a miss, since the SFF warhead fires forward at about a 45 degree down angle.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/008o85p4ray3et0/Screenshot 2016-07-16 19.54.10.png?dl=0

But BFC has decreed otherwise, as seen below.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/awqcdr9y4x3q97q/Screenshot 2016-07-16 19.54.52.png?dl=0

WHAM!

https://www.dropbox.com/s/wu1dmtel8pgxdhd/Screenshot 2016-07-16 19.55.35.png?dl=0

Remember when I told you the T-90AM had fired on me? Well, here comes that shot!

https://www.dropbox.com/s/w51d1e8l28nxj5o/Screenshot 2016-07-16 19.59.19.png?dl=0

And while all that's going on, not all all far from the immoiated Bradley and crew, my other Abrams is trying to deal with a target array which may or may not consist of a tank, a mortar track and infantry, alone or in combination.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/g9uxxdcxkvpl8qo/Screenshot 2016-07-16 20.02.33.png?dl=0

It may or may not be doing anything, but it's certain to get Ivan's attention.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/2qxawfcb80joih0/Screenshot 2016-07-16 20.03.05.png?dl=0

The calculus of war is grim, and in the overall scheme of things, I "won" this part of the battle because I swapped a Bradley for a T-90AM. In reality, my force has sustained terrible losses and hovers on the edge of disaster. One Abrams is dead, but the crew is unhurt. A Bradley is KOed, taking the crew with it. If there's any good news here, it's that I previously dismounted an otherwise useless FO team (have no FS) two minutes before the Bradley crept to its doom. Remaining BLUFOR: 2 x M1A2 SEP V3 Abrams and 1 x M2A3 (ERA) Bradley, plus 2 x FO teams, one with no track. All this and but little over a third of the alloted time has been used. Am going to press on, but one more loss, and I'm calling for a Cease Fire.

Regards,

John Kettler

Two more minutes have passed. The first was akin to the silence of the tomb, with absolutely nothing happening. I kept one Abrams back in the trees, together with the fangless FO teram, watching for any sign of a threat. The next minute I made a move, with Cover Arcs up for both the Abrams in the trees and the Abrams over by my remaining Bradley, which stood overwatch as I sped that Abrams forward. Didn't go quite as planned. Moved up, got lased, probably from Major VP Plehany or maybe behind it but with LOS through it. The obscurants deployed smartly, and the Abrams, bearing LT Friday, reversed out of harm's way. With almost two thirds of the normal game clock to go, I'm wondering what to do next. I seem to be in jeopardy from a Minor VP and the Major VP (or beyond), and my force is awfully sparse and brittle. I've also discovered, quite belatedly because I was too distracted by being able to finally play I forgot to check, that I in fact have no infantry! Instead, I have the Infantry XO, his RTO and another FO team. If you combined all my dismounts, I wouldn't have even a single full strength squad. Two Abrams, one Bradley, no FS and just got lased. Shall have to ponder this situation. At least I got a couple of good snaps.

And things were going so well. So I keep telling myself while not believing a word. Behold! The current high water mark of my advance on the left. Note LWR has gone off. I also noticed that my tank seems to have no tactical markings at all. Why? Don't we use any anymore?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/oxqvmolp4toqyw5/Screenshot 2016-07-20 01.41.22.png?dl=0

The soil of Ukraine is rich and fertile indeed. Just look how fast my obscurants bloomed!

StieliAlpha and Badger73,

Had to go get an injection today and informed my doctor of my progress with my new therapeutic regimen. He was pleased, but suggested I fight humans in order to have a better chance of winning! Frankly, I don't know whether the current game is winnable vs AI with what I have and strong indicators of the foe on/near two separate VLs. I've taken some serious lumps, and I doubt either panzersaurkrautwerfer or pnzrldr would be impressed with my martial prowess thus far.

Remember the NLOS? My youngest brother scored 122,900 and made it through 12 of 15 levels on his very first game! Fortunately, I do not define my worth in terms of NLOS score.

Dear John,

NLOS does not ring a bell with me.  I think you might be mistaking me for Badger Dog (whom you seem to remember quite fondly).  My acronym google-foo is weak today.  What was NLOS?

With regard to your doctor's suggestion, I'm not sure H2H play provides a better chance of winning nor do I think that winning matters for your therapies.  If the goal is cognitive exercise, I suggest that game re-play lessons learned might be more effective for such purposes.  Given what you now know in this encounter, consider going back to an earlier save-game and apply the intelligence you've gleaned to readjust your battle planning. Your immediate goal seems to be less about winning or losing but more about concentration, pattern analysis, and problem solving.  Most of all just play and have fun.  Laugh at your setbacks.  Gleefully strive to consistently repeat your successes.  Humor is wonderful therapy as well.

Badger73,

NLOS is a simple, fun, yet progressively more demanding 2-D ballistics sim for the NLOS SPH.

I provided the link earlier in the thread, but here it is again. In order to hit a whole series of ever tougher targets with limited ammo you must juggle elevation angle and shell velocity. I picked it because it's engaging and works the brain but requires nothing like CMBS level cognitive  functioning

Ah yes, I remember playing this addictive if simple game years ago in two simpler versions (or was that three). But it had been years since I last saw it and a few days ago I got to wondering whatever had happened to it. Then hey presto! up Kettler pops with a link to it! Nice timing, John. BTW, my score on the first run through this time was 36,500.

"We return to our previously interrupted QB in progress."

The next turn was  pretty quiet, but I nearly franged my own tank while repositioning behind my obscurant cloud. After overachieving on house hugging with my Abrams, which fortunately didn't damage anything, I did some fancy maneuvering to pop out from the left side of it. As a result, there was a single round of AMP fired at a suspected orphaned AFV crew over on the western Minor VL. Icon disappeared, but that's all I know. Efforts to do something similar with Del Rio's Bradley failed when he got lased and again had to back up. My other Abrams trundled out of its hollow, sniffed around and rolled back into it. We are now at minute 15, and I'm still in the fight.

Not my finest tank driving!

Ignorance may not be bliss, but getting lased over and over again is galling and morale erosive. What I do now know that I didn't before is that some threat in the western minor VL lased me right in the kisser.

Minute 14 got rather hairy--wooly mammoth level. the closest thing I ever had to a general advance began, taking advantage of smokescreens. The Armor Battalion CO, Brookbank, is either a tactical genius or a fool, dashing forward into his own screen and putting the main VL's buildings between himself and anything lurking in the woodline behind it. Trees are off for clarity.

Holy mackerel! Over a month since I last posted. By some miracle, I got real work done on several writing efforts and got another few turns in. The start was awful. Unfortunately, you'll have to wait because I'm having DB issues. I took another painful loss, but have a tank sitting on the main VP and subsequently have inflicted another K-Kill, this time on an IFV. Am debating whether to call for a ceasefire, since my rump force is down to battered bone.

While I'm not in medicine taking shape presently, I am going to attempt to get those pics up. I seem to be several turns behind, so here goes.

In a cloud of his own broadband obscurants, the Battalion CO fully lives up to his super aggressive/crazy rep by charging toward the Major VL. Will he make it?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/y2e4dvj7f98pw6z/Screenshot 2016-08-22 21.46.29.png?dl=0

Fortune favors the bold! Brookbank smashes through a fence and is on the objective.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mvg1aq973lne73z/Screenshot 2016-08-22 21.48.33.png?dl=0

Once there, he slips the tank forward into a fairly covered position. Only one problem. He can't see anything!

https://www.dropbox.com/s/l69c5xq3ix635f3/Screenshot 2016-08-22 21.53.16.png?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mlzy0jp33lj7nm4/Screenshot 2016-08-22 21.54.46.png?dl=0

Turns out the great position can see a whole 300 meters or so, in terms of the ground (not that Shtora cloud down range), leading to this little incident in which the commander's intent wasn't at all well executed. I think I used the wrong command (Bail Out, but Dismount wasn't lit), but the plan was to climb out of the tank and into the three story building on the right. Let's see how that went, shall we?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mdoifhhvfbwf52e/Screenshot 2016-08-22 22.05.00.png?dl=0

After recalling his confused crew, he first gathered them round the tank and issued new orders.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/e8m0mmrxmbdi1f5/Screenshot 2016-08-22 22.05.58.png?dl=0

Meanwhile, Friday's LWR has gone off, and it appears something is shooting at him. He shoots back.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/o7gwm85d32i003e/Screenshot 2016-08-22 22.15.34.png?dl=0

Unfortunately, nothing can stop several 30 mm bursts headed his way!

https://www.dropbox.com/s/dfailuvt52dhvzy/Screenshot 2016-08-22 22.17.34.png?dl=0

Bad juju! The all-important Targeting system has been degraded, together with the so far useless Trophy.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/o70cpxj46ddzzql/Screenshot 2016-08-22 22.19.06.png?dl=0

Friday killed something over there but is again being lased. This is getting old fast, just like Friday.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/41lz81oopgymsb1/Screenshot 2016-08-22 22.21.02.png?dl=0

And back at Dismounted Tank Crew Recon 101, the men are finally sorted out and ready to enter.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ylkohejevszr0v1/Screenshot 2016-08-22 22.22.27.png?dl=0

There may be more later, but I'm presently having issues getting DB to let me access what was readily available before. Is there some timer I don't know about? Can't seem to access links for some excitement involving Del Rio.

Hey John, here is an PBEM opponent that plays Platoon up to Reinforced Company size engagements. You can try your hand against him for more continued Therapy as there is no need to play against anyone else...After all, who else do you know on these Forums reminisced the past playing "TRACTICS"  :-)

JoMc67,

Sounds great in theory, but if I can't manage to get a single turn done in over a month (~1.25) vs the computer, why would anyone want to be PBEM me? Frankly, I'm shocked it's been sol long, but the wetware isn't something I control. The ability to play is either there, or it's not. Fortunately, the writing circuits have had some good runs lately.

Surely, you meant you can't get a 'Single Game' done in over a month vs. the Computer, then I could understand...However, if by the smallest chance in the universe, you said One-Turn in over a month....Then, Daaammmnnn, what the Frack is wrong with you :-)

Of course, I will have to wait another month before you respond back :-/

JoMc67,

Am recovering from a TBI ~4.5 years ago. While some things have gotten better, when it comes to the necessary neural circuitry, the part which handles the overall visual comprehension and  temporospatial relationships needed to play CM, I'm in worse shape now than I was in 2013. Since wargaming is my prime source of stress release, it is very stressful that I'm so seldom able to play. Still, progress. I've had hiatuses four months long! As my doctor put it, much to my dismay, "When it comes to neurological injuries, there is no timetable." Fortunately, my writing circuits work way better than my wargaming circuits. Otherwise, I'd be totally screwed on a bunch of fronts.

John Kettler
