ISIS vs Iraqi Army in Ramadi

Recommended Posts

LongLeftFlank,

Looks like your maps are getting another workout. ISIS is on the outskirts of Ramadi, and the Iraqi Army holds the center of the city. Fanatical ISIS militia (how do you model brittle morale?) vs Iraqi Army fending off ISIS counteroffensive after ISIS lost Tikrit.

Now John, is this topic really valid for the CMSF Forum?

I have a link to a story on how Doctors at the Mayo Clinic are using re-engineered AIDS virus cells to kill Leukemia cells in children and adults, with a 90% full remission rate. This story is far more uplifting and shows how hard we are working to alleviate human suffering, while ISIS continues to ravage the Middle East in its attempt to turn back the clock 800 years.

Which would you rather read?

This is a game forum not a world events forum, John please learn the difference.

Nidan1,

LongLeftFlank spent over 1000 hours, over some three years, building a great, properly depicted chunk of Ramadi for CMSF. I thought it worth noting that all these years later, here's another use for all that amazing work he did. The work's done, and current highly unfortunate events nevertheless provide for some interesting gaming possibilities. That's why I initiated the post.

You catch me on a rare look-in. Yes, the map remains largely applicable although I believe the shattered city blocks north of the long besieged Anbar Government Center were demolished and turned into a public park.

My Ramadi map is built along a main route, Highway 10, which the US forces dubbed MSR Michigan. There's a reason for that.

The American battles for Ramadi in 2004-2006 were essentially fought around keeping the central government flag flying in Anbar's capital for PR purposes. This required keeping Route Michigan nominally open for convoys. All other military actions in Ramadi -- cordon and knock, the "Ramadi Inn", guntrucks, SEAL snipers, etc., can be best understood in relation to that overriding mission.

Many brave Marines and GIs left buddies, blood or souls in that town; it's left its stamp on US military history and one day I hope the full story is told.

As to current events, it is easy to envision an Iraqi Army armoured column rolling down Route Michigan and then finding itself trapped and under furious assault on all sides by RPGs and VBIEDs striking from the dense residential clusters each side in an awful throwback to the French debacles in Indochina. The IAs huddle in their AFVs, but their big guns can't locate the targets; the rockets keep hammering in, vehicles burst into flames and darkness falls as ammo runs low.... Unlike the Americans, they don't know how to do QRFs.... the relief column stalls. Massacre!

Kind of like the Baba Amr scenario SBurke and I played a bit of back in 2012, just with the Uncon force ***vastly*** better armed.

But that scenario is for someone else to build, not me. Unless we watch it on the news.

The Baathist insurgents in Ramadi nearly managed just such a massacre against an IA column on Oct 2, 2005. Fortunately the US tankers of 2/69 were there to pull their nuts out...

From the blog of a US Marine adviser to the IA:

"Oct 2, 2005, At 2200, an escort of three or four M1A1 main battle tanks rolled up out of the darkness to meet our IA convoy of about three Nissan guntrucks and ten Leyland troop trucks.... About 15 minutes after their departure, all hell opened up in downtown Ramadi. At about 2230 3-2-1 [iA] and 2-69 had been hit with a complex attack, resulting in about (3) KIA and (35) WIA."

"I was the 2-69 Platoon Leader that led the convoy to roughly the GOV CENTER on the night of 02 October. Call sign Dealer Blue 1. I was in communication with you, Panther X-Ray, Blade X-Ray (3/7 Marines), and coordinating my platoon fight all at the same time. Chaos does not even begin to describe it."

"One detail: it was a hell of a lot more than 2 or 3 IEDs that went off. My lead track was the first to get hit, then me and the IA truck in front of me took a massive IED. Upon the 2nd hit the convoy went down and we started receiving small arms and RPG fire. Also, they began setting off prepositioned IEDs as groups of IA began to move out of the street. I always enjoyed working with the Drifter (IA with USMC "MTT" advisers) guys on our raids into the Mulaab."

ISIS is now claiming it has full control of Ramadi. The US isn't admitting it, but is averring the city has long been contested and the latest developments in no way derail the overall strategy for the war in Iraq. ISIS may be overstating its case, but the Iraqi Army forces in Ramadi are headed west to save themselves, or so says an Iraqi commander from the garrison there. 7 US airstrikes, too.

Ramadi has definitely fallen, but the circumstances are pretty astounding. 6000 Iraqi police (if that's what they were, and doubtless carrying ARs, not pistols) couldn't deal with 150 ISIS fighters supported by 10 car bombs.

One cannot but stop to marvel at the beauty of such maps. The recent topics on CMSF, led me to here.. and I've picked up the thread.

@LongLeftFlank is there any testing, beta testing, help that we can do for your current, future game design ? Please do count me in. This ME environment is such a twist from mainland Europe.

regards

If you want to try out some stuff on my Mosul variant of LLF's Ramadi map, I should have some bits coming together before too long.

I will be opening a thread for Mosul very soon.....I'm currently still picking over the map trying to make sure everything's sorted before I start, as I said I've used a small chunk of Ramadi to represent the Al Karamah district of Mosul, but I needed to replace the buildings in several sections of map to better match the reality.  Building residential blocks to the same high standard set by LLF in the rest of the map has been a real challenge, nothing on his map (or mine) is random, it's all been worked out with great care.

Core concept: every residential compound is a fortress. Blue doesn't get to stand off with ranged weapons and deathstar Red shooters.

In Mosul, you also have IEDs and mines. Lots of 'em, everywhere. So every place you enter is a potential death trap even if it's quiet as the grave. On the other hand, the locals have fled such areas and are probably happy to point them out to the CTS -- "Badrists" or not,  they're happy to see the back of the Da'esh. So low pop density.

Another tip, Uncon solo snipers come with a large supply of hand grenades. These guys are as dangerous planted deep inside buildings as they are up on rooftops plying the SVDs. For example, start them up there then fairly early on (before counterfire can start picking them off) issue a Sniper Group AI order to change floors. Then wait for the enemy to come calling....

Another sniper trick I like to use: have a Spy collocated with a sniper, but Hiding and facing away from incoming. If the sniper gets it, the Spy will eventually unhide and Medic his mate, then retrieve the rifle and begin to use it. So now BLUE thinks he's neutralized the threat, only to have it arise again while he's moving. Spy doesn't grab the grenades though, alas....

I discovered your sniper/spy combo in action.....Plastered a sniper with one of the Hummers, but noticed someone was plinking me again a minute or two later, so I plastered the same location, until I spotted the little b******d.....Then I plastered him too!  ;)

@borg  You should message LLF.....His 'Ramadi - Wicked Wednesday' is under testing right now and it's epic!  B)

RamTest1%20-%20Start_zpswnzuz6cd.jpg

PS - Forgot to add that I was also under fire from the survivor of an RPG team who had picked up an SVD somewhere along the way.....From my own experiences testing my CM:A stuff I've noticed some units (especially spies & vehicle crew) really like to tool-up and will happily upgrade to the best weapons at hand (in one instance I had a spy with an AK-74, and vehicle crew with AK-74/40mmGL, RPK and a PPSh)!  :o

PPS - They don't take weapons from fallen enemies though, only from fallen comrades, I'd really love to see this changed in a future iteration of the game.....Don't get careless with those Javelin Teams!
