Graphics suck?!!?!?!

Got a mate who is a cabinet maker. Spent years acquiring the skills of his trade only to end up, over a period of time, punching buttons on a machine that churns out mass produced furniture that sells by the truck loads. Got sick of the mindless repetiveness so chucked it all in and sold his business.

Having a mate who is a master cabinet maker also, I know exactly what you mean :D

When we moved from CMx1 to CMx2 we had a lot of people that were upset. They assumed that we didn't want to change, that we didn't want to do more than the same thing over and over again. When we announced we were doing Modern first, a subset of our customers were angry with us. When they found out that the game was radically different than the first one, even though they asked for the very features it now contained, they got nasty. Someday we will have to go through this again. It's going to be an entertaining transition at the very least.

The graphics aren't that bad IMO. That said I feel the stock explosions, flames, tracers could do with an update. The textures are really good but let down by the razor straight edges of roads, walls and buildings.  I don't know if it's possible but maybe adding some transparent alpha channels to the edges of those textures would  give them more realistic  natural look.

Have purchased every CM game made and will continue to do so, and I am one of those silent customers who just loves the game system and the way it simulates the battlefield for a non soldier type. Graphics are always good to great (for me) and so is the AI (for more challenge I play PBEM). I am very glad Battlefront publishes these games as they have given me years of entertainment and fun.

Hey Stag,

How can you say you are getting a contract for a game you are building in your spare time and then link RHS? According to their documentation you are a core member of the dev group but so is Ardy and all he did was create the OpsCore and ACH helmets.

http://doc.rhsmods.org/index.php/Credits

I don't see how a huge MP lobby would benefit the game that much, while there are those that prefer Real Time H2H without needing to forward ports and search IPs, the majority of players I have been around prefer PBEM. It is almost like how old men played chess with the newspaper back in the day. Play at your own pace, and I think this has a huge appeal to many of the people that enjoy this series.

As for the AI, a system comparable to Steel Beasts Pro PE would fit the CM style very well. Conditions and Event based actions and reactions with triggers to spice things up. They have a very easy to use UI to make this an easy process and you can build them into every waypoint and route. I know that Steel Beasts has some military contracts so they might of had a larger budget for AI development, but it is a remarkable system that would seem to fit in with the CM engine. Everyone talks about ArmA's graphics but it is a pain in the *** to get the level of editing power achieved through an easy to use UI in Steel Beasts.

AFAIK Drew made helmets. That's what he did. I do missions and config. I never said I was doing it by myself Scott, not once. RHS is a team, Escalation is the total conversion project - but we are lined up for the MANW prize yes. Nice to see you appear and have a pop though eh, cant resist after a while to appear and give someone a hammering who you haven't spoke to in I don't know how many years. :)

Feel free to hit me up for a PBEM thrashing.

Taking it full circle...I stumbled on this comment at the SimHQ forums.

"Thanks for the response Magnum. My tastes in the past have always been (and remain) combat flight sims and titles like Steel Fury, SB Pro PE and the Arma series. The CM series never appealed because it looked awkward to play and visually clunky."

http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/4081575/Re:_CM:Red_Thunder#Post4081575

He looks like he is convinced to maybe try CM.  But note what games he plays and compares to CM.  He does not compare feature for feature, but looks at what he likes to play.  He lumps ARMA, GTOS, and Steel Beasts together.

This I what I have been saying. This is the player base that has to be exploited and marketed to. It should be ALL YOUR PLAYER BASE ARE BELONG TO US, BIS/EagleDynamics/ESim.

I don't want to see CM stop. I think they are great games. I want them to be better. I want more people to enjoy them. I have given my two cents anyway, and thanks to Vanir for pointing out my point and supporting me in regards to MP functionality. That's my gripe.

Sorry if I was a dick Steve, just riles me up sometimes when you go onto a forum and all the posters are instantaneously dismissive.

Hi,

Graphics have for a long-time been great up close.. hugely immersive.

With upgrade 3.00 they shot up in quality for the long distance landscape screenshots too.. on my machine anyway.

In fact Upgrade 3.00 was a real stunner.  A number of things came together.. one of them being the improvement in landscape graphics.

All those CMX2 titles up to the latest standard to choose from for a game.. ;).

The Upgrade system is superb :).

All the best,

Kip.

Has a little workshop in his backyard now and makes one off hand made furniture. Makes enough to keep the lights on, food on the table and the bankers off his back. Goes to bed with smile on his face.

Have a couple of his pieces and very well made they are too.

Wouldn't have touched the crap he was churning out of his factory though.

Better graphics... I mean really!

So very well said.

Phrased like this, we have zero conflict. It is our goals too, which is why we adopted the Upgrade system. Instead of letting our games get stale, we continue to improve them. Our philosophy with the Upgrades is to focus on one or two particular element/s of the game, but go broad over the rest of the spectrum of features people want to see improved. Graphics and UI were the prime improvements for 2.0 Upgrade, Multiplayer and AI were the big two for 3.0 Upgrade.

Of course, our "broad front" strategy is a choice. We could go "narrow front" strategy. For example, have invested all our energies for 2.0 on graphics alone. Then multiplayer alone for 3.0. Or just done graphics entirely for both or not done the equivalent of 2.0 and instead waited 2 years to release a single massive graphics overhaul. These are legitimate ways of going about improving the game. However, I'm confident that CM's overall customer base prefers the "broad front" strategy because they get a wider range of improvements and they get them sooner.

Apology accepted and appreciated. Games that don't inspire passion aren't games worth talking about. With passion comes... uhm... passion :) So we do get into rows here and there about execution of vision. But in the end, it's our butts on the line as a business and your gaming niche on the line if we fail. There is no equivalent to CM out there for most CM players, so we must be careful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. A major shift in development priorities is more likely to do that then not.

FWIW, Im probably an exception here as a play a lot of games. If Steam was a casino they would give me a free VIP room. Different games, and at the same time. Well not simultaneously, but you know. So I'm playing lets say Wasteland for hours on end, get bored and play a couple hours of CMBS. Then back to COH, Warhammer, then back to Black Sea. Well my point is the models, vehicles, and troops look really good in Black Sea. Compared to other games they are right up there. Even better than the other games I am playing.  I play on max resolution for everything. I think maybe the terrain could do with a face lift only thing. But even that's ok for me.

If you could just fold "Whose Turn is it" or "CMH" into the game it would probably increase the multiplayer community substantially.  It is about reducing the size of the hurdle to get it to work the first time. It certainly seems like small resource improvement.

Actually I humbly thing that those two programs are a good reason for Steve to *not* roll those features into the product. GreenAsJade and I could make them work way better with a few additional features - even just command line options (see the link in my sig). I feel that there are enough passionate people here that could and would create additional worthwhile features around the core game and BFC would not have to do all the work. We do need them to do some to allow us to hook into the game.

Imagine if you will BFC creates:

  • command line options to start the game and load a saved game, start a new scenario, campaign or QB, and hook up via TCP/IP etc.
  • a data file with the game AAR screen data (the points, the casualties, the combat victories etc.)
  • a way to create a new scenario or QB from a unit input file (including reduced head counts on units)
  • a way to save a map with the existing combat damage from the current state of the game.
Then WTII and CMH could start the game you wanted right up, The CM results spreadsheet could be made to automatically update your play results, campaign designers could automate creating the CM games for their operational layers. And probably a ton of things that I have not even though about before. The point is the support work needed could be leveraged into additional value to players that would not cost BFC any more effort.

Yes, the needed support would be a non trivial amount of work. I hope that Steve will decide to do one small part from time to time so that an ecosystem of supporting programs could be developed.

This is actually a good first step. Fully agree if it can be done.

You know why I've been playing Combat Mission since 2000 ? It has a soul, character, its detailed and historically accurate without feeling like a shore to play and best of all, it's fun and it let me explore a subject i've always been interested in without risking life, limb and my conscience :)

Agree here - I remember how the Multiplayer lobby ( what some people are asking for ) for IL2 was in fact a 3rd party effort ( who remembers Hyperlobby fondly ?  :) ).
