Special Upgrade 4 Tech Tips   12/27/2016

Hi all! Now that Upgrade 4 is out and about in large quantities we have now discovered a few SNAFUs that happen out in the scary, real world that is home computing.  Fortunately the rate of problems is extremely small and so far most are easily worked around.  We've identified a few issues that have similar causes which we have clear instructions for work arounds here they are: 1.  CMRT Windows customers need to re-license their original key.  This is a result of improvements to the licensing system which CMBN, CMBS, and CMFB are already using.  To do this launch CMRT with the Upgrade and the first time enter your Engine 4 key.  Exit and then use the "Activate New Products" shortcut in your CMRT folder, then enter your Engine 3 license key.  That should do the trick. 2.  CMRT and CMBN MacOS customers have a similar situation as #2, however the "Activate New Products" is inside the Documents folder in their respective CM folders.  For CMBN you have to go through the process described above for each of your license keys.  There is no special order to follow. 3.  For CMBS and CMFB customers, you need to use the Activate New Products shortcut and enter your Upgrade 4 key.  If you launch the game and see a screen that says "LICENSE FAILURE: Base Game 4.0 is required." that is an indication you haven't yet gone through that procedure.  Provided you had a properly functioning copy before installing the Upgrade, that should be all you need to do.  If in the future you have to install from scratch on a new system you'll need to do the same procedure for both your original license key and your Upgrade 4.0 key. 4.  There's always a weird one and here it is.  A few Windows users are not getting "Activate New Products" shortcuts created during installation.  Apparently anti-virus software is preventing the installer from doing its job.  This might not be a problem right now, but it will prove to be an issue at some point in the future.  The solution is to create your own shortcut using the following steps: Disable your anti-virus software before you do anything. Go to your Desktop, right click on the Desktop itself, select NEW->SHORTCUT, use BROWSE to locate the CM EXE that you are trying to fix. The location is then written out. After it type in a single space and then paste this:

      -showui

Click NEXT and give your new Shortcut a name (doesn't matter what). Confirm that and you're done. Double click on the new Shortcut and you should be prompted to license whatever it is you need to license. At this time we have not identified any issues that have not been worked around.  Let's hope it stays that way Steve

Instructions for Upgrading CMFI to Engine 4   04/09/2017

Upgrading CMFI to Engine 4 requires prior product purchases be relicensed.  This is because we've updated the copy protection software.  This is a one time thing which also affected CMBN Mac and CMRT for both platforms, so some of you will find these instructions familiar.  The method of relicensing is flexible, but here's the optimal method: 1.  After installing using the Full or Update installers, launch the game.  You'll be prompted to license.  Enter you Engine 4 license key and exit. 2.  Use the "Activate New Products" short cut in your CMFI folder to launch the game with the license window.  Enter your Engine 3 license key.  If you bought the Upgrade 3 + 4 Bundle then you can skip this step. 3.  Use the "Activate New Products" short again and enter your Engine 2 license key *IF* you have one, otherwise skip this step.  Note that CMFI started it's life was Engine 2, therefore if you owned the game prior to Upgrade 3 coming out then your CMFI Base Game license key is your Engine 2 key. 4.  If you purchased Gustav Line as a separate product, use "Activate New Products" again and enter your Gustav license key.  If you bought Gustav as a Bundle, it should already be activated. If you should run into any issues, try to figure out what key is missing (the game should give you adequate feedback for that) and use "Activate New Products" link to allow you to enter whichever key is needed.  If you still have a problem, especially if you bought a Gustav Line Bundle (some keys definitely didn't transition correctly!), file with our Help Desk and include the license key you're having problems with: https://battlefront.mojohelpdesk.com If you can not find your license keys sent to you by email, no problem.  Go to your store account and check your Order History.  Keys and download links are always there for you unless you ordered a "hardgoods only" option.  In that case your license keys are on the back of the CD/DVD cases that came in the mail. Also good to know... if a download link in an email confirmation doesn't work, go to Order History and try from there.

CM Maps Universal Translator Tool

51 posts in this topic

I think the fact that we have such a full featured editor available speaks volumes that BFC think there is a benefit to them to have as many people as possible create scenarios. That benefit extends to all of us.

Having said that (please also note I do not speak for BFC in any way so my reasoning may not match theirs at all), making a map conversion tool is not as easy as flipping a bit/byte. Yes, I know you guys have had success, fine but as you noted lots of stuff does not convert a legit tool would have to deal with that in a safe manner. There would likely have to be some user influence about converting or stripping flavour objects or certain buildings etc. Plus, there would be some kind of support needed. Things could get interesting. For example earlier someone mentioned that high bocage worked in CMBS. What if that was just luck and a future clean up takes that away and now your maps crash the game. Yuck. If they create an official tool they have to deal with that and deal with the crash later. Heck if you guys hack it and create a scenario that later crashes - guess what they might have to spend time dealing with that too (because people who are not in the loop will log a support ticket that scenario xyz crashes their game, please fix).

I hope those waves are not too negative for ya :D

Hi Ian,

Roger all that. Glad to hear your thoughts. Not negative at all. For the record, this thread was just my attempt to create a pleasantly phrased request in one more thread among hundreds here floating down the stream to cyber oblivion or whatever you want to call it. Those dark and scary forum pages with threads from years ago where nobody goes after dark. Note: I am not a programmer and do not play one on TV.

Don't keep the high bocage. Don't keep family specific houses/terrain. Gut out all the flavor objects and zero out everything as close as possible to the least common denominator between the families if such exists like a brand new scenario file you create in the editor. What remains in the *.btt are your elevations and your AI plan if possible.

I don't mind making my own maps and AI plans. It is fun for me. But sometimes it is much easier for me to go map shopping and use some parts of stuff that has already been made. This map translation topic is not a passion level issue with me but some issues came to the fore here and I took my discussion with ASL Veteran to a PM. We eventually agreed to a ceasefire. It turns out that he is a stock scenario writer and I told him, after I learned his real name, that I had just a few months ago taken one of his scenarios and deleted all units, all AI plans, cropped map down to about a 4th the size, added hedges, roads, a new village, forest, my own units, AI plan, objective names and made it a scenario in my campaign I uploaded. I thanked the person who had their name on that other scenario in my designer's notes and in another scenario in my campaign, I named a fictional town after him and had a battle there. He then said it was okay to keep it on the websites for download. Why did I use his scenario? Well, one little part of his map seemed to roughly match what I had in my imagination. Like a few chords in one song and then I write a new song I guess?

I think this feature should be allowed. Boy how I'd love to play those market garden mastermaps in CMBS

If it could be done it would be a fantastic tool IMHO, but I think I'd prefer something 'in-house'.

As would I. However, I'm sure the devs are very busy. I long for Steve to reply to this thread!

See here:

That tool works. Converted a map of mine from CMBN to CMBS, CMRT and CMFI. Now we only need CMFB in the mix and we can have summer battles in the Ardennes and winter battles in Normandy.

cheers

I'm able to see maps in the editor, but launching QB maps across titles never gets beyond 0% "loading data"

Suggestions? I'm not a scenario maker, just looking for more QB maps.

This was always a risky proposition. Likely the converted map has something on it that does not exist in the new destination. You might be able to solve it by closely examining the map for possible candidate terrain, buildings or other features and delete and replace them. Can you actually enter the 3D preview in the scenario editor?

It does load up. It even looks pretty great!  The buildings are converted, as best I can tell.  The buildings are converted, as best I can tell.

The map is 024Attk Huge Open 024.btt and I'm trying to take it from CMFI to CMBS. I attached the file.

Saving the map in the CMBS editor under a different name did the trick for me. Loads fine now in QB. Before saving under a different name it was crashing CMBS although I could view it fine in the 3D view of the scen editor.

Working map attached. Enjoy!

Worked like a charm! In the future, do I do more-or-less the same thing?

Yep!

Oh, now that is freaking outstanding!!  :D

That map opened with no problems....very, very cool...the possibilities are almost limitless for QB junkies like myself....thanks very much!

More CMFI, please....I have a Mac and am not nearly smart enough to make this converter widget work, but will happily sing kudos to all who can.....

I'm working through the Huge QB maps first. Let me know if you run into any problems.

I think so. Saving in the editor first might solve some unexpected problems from the "hard"-conversion.

Might it be worth giving them a few debugging runs?

I'd definitely like to look them over in the editor.  B)

Roger that...thanks much...

@DougPhresh

So loaded up 107Asslt Huge Bridge.btt with mixed auto forces just to see what it would do...DAYUM...that is an awesome map...would have been an absolute bloodbath with modern weapons....Those CMFI maps are going to be a blast with modern forces.

Thanks for doing them.

So have you been able to upload all the CMFI->CMBS maps?

I've converted all Huge and Large maps, but have no idea how to put them all up at once.

Well, when one of the gang rounded up and posted all the user made scenarios they used either a public drop box or google drive.

PM me and I would be happy to help.
