Special Upgrade 4 Tech Tips   12/27/2016

Hi all! Now that Upgrade 4 is out and about in large quantities we have now discovered a few SNAFUs that happen out in the scary, real world that is home computing.  Fortunately the rate of problems is extremely small and so far most are easily worked around.  We've identified a few issues that have similar causes which we have clear instructions for work arounds here they are: 1.  CMRT Windows customers need to re-license their original key.  This is a result of improvements to the licensing system which CMBN, CMBS, and CMFB are already using.  To do this launch CMRT with the Upgrade and the first time enter your Engine 4 key.  Exit and then use the "Activate New Products" shortcut in your CMRT folder, then enter your Engine 3 license key.  That should do the trick. 2.  CMRT and CMBN MacOS customers have a similar situation as #2, however the "Activate New Products" is inside the Documents folder in their respective CM folders.  For CMBN you have to go through the process described above for each of your license keys.  There is no special order to follow. 3.  For CMBS and CMFB customers, you need to use the Activate New Products shortcut and enter your Upgrade 4 key.  If you launch the game and see a screen that says "LICENSE FAILURE: Base Game 4.0 is required." that is an indication you haven't yet gone through that procedure.  Provided you had a properly functioning copy before installing the Upgrade, that should be all you need to do.  If in the future you have to install from scratch on a new system you'll need to do the same procedure for both your original license key and your Upgrade 4.0 key. 4.  There's always a weird one and here it is.  A few Windows users are not getting "Activate New Products" shortcuts created during installation.  Apparently anti-virus software is preventing the installer from doing its job.  This might not be a problem right now, but it will prove to be an issue at some point in the future.  The solution is to create your own shortcut using the following steps: Disable your anti-virus software before you do anything. Go to your Desktop, right click on the Desktop itself, select NEW->SHORTCUT, use BROWSE to locate the CM EXE that you are trying to fix. The location is then written out. After it type in a single space and then paste this:

      -showui

Click NEXT and give your new Shortcut a name (doesn't matter what). Confirm that and you're done. Double click on the new Shortcut and you should be prompted to license whatever it is you need to license. At this time we have not identified any issues that have not been worked around.  Let's hope it stays that way Steve

      Forum Reorganization   10/12/2017

We've reorganized our Combat Mission Forums to reflect the fact that most of you are now running Engine 4 and that means you're all using the same basic code.  Because of that, there's no good reason to have the discussion about Combat Mission spread out over 5 separate sets of Forums.  There is now one General Discussion area with Tech Support and Scenario/Mod Tips sub forums.  The Family specific Tech Support Forums have been moved to a new CM2 Archives area and frozen in place. You might also notice we dropped the "x" from distinguishing between the first generation of CM games and the second.  The "x" was reluctantly adopted back in 2005 or so because at the time we had the original three CM games on European store shelves entitled CM1, CM2, and CM3 (CMBO, CMBB, and CMAK).  We didn't want to cause confusion so we added the "x".  Time has moved on and we have to, so the "x" is now gone from our public vocabulary as it has been from our private vocabulary for quite a while already.  Side note, Charles *NEVER* used the "x" so now we're all speaking the same language as him.  Which is important since he is the one programming them

Kieme, your VS-17 panels looks pretty sweet for adding more character to these vehicles but not so sure about the "taped on thing". Everything in the Army pretty much gets tied down with 550 cord. Always exceptions of course but yea.

Sure thing Jock,

just rename the optional hull this way:

m1200-hull 2

Not exactly a 5 to 1, but there'll be some hulls with the panel.

Can't you also make multiple copies of the basic hull, each with a different number?  If the first 5 are copies of the basic and the sixth is the one with a panel, you'll have a 5-to-1 ratio (on average).

My assumption is that game picks one of the series randomly whenever it spawns the vehicle.  Is that not it?

Thank you for your continuing awesomeness, Kieme! I just installed the latest two.

I see that BTR's standard color mod for the Russians is out. IIRC, you were holding off on weathering the Russian vehicles due to your not liking their base color and not wanting to take the time to mod it as well.

Now that his mod is available, do you have any plans to perhaps use it as a base for adding weathering and such to the Russian vehicles as you have done for the other factions?

^ ...that'd be excellent!

Thanks for pointing it out, the truth is, I didn't know where it could be tied on the top of an M1200 (never seen one). So I went for a cheap ducktape, but I understand what you mean.

Sure thing, if you make more copies of the base one you'll get the effect you desire. Although I don't know how many missions will give you a certain quantity of M1200..

You're welcome.

I haven't checked the files yet. Of course it is time to finish the americans first, which are almost done. We will see, as I don't know how it would work using another person mod to mod over it.

Kieme CMBS USA M1200 vehicle names add on

A simple add on. Adds a name stenciled in low visibility on the left top hull of each vehicle. There are a a total of 12 names of more or less famous american explorers.

This is a stretched attempt, so consider it a full kind of a fictional addition, I had the files ready and decided to upload them.

Please note this is note compatible with the VS-17 mod.

Kieme- yea now that I thought about it I'm not sure what would make tie downs look decent/authentic either. The duck tape is a good compromise. My last post probably came off as kind of dickish so my apologies for not adding constructive feedback. Your vehicles are awesome and can't wait to see the rest, especially alternative camo schemes for the Russians if you end up doing that.

No problem at all! No need to apologize. When I look at the hummer real picture I found, I see the signal flag is held in place by wires.

About the camo schemes, they really take a lot of time and the results are never guaranteed. I'd like to try some. Maybe on the T-90AM, following the few pictures available, but still not that sure.

Kieme, just a quick question about your tip about "Aris Dirty Faces" mod.

I did it like you told but some soldiers still have the original "plain" faces, is there a way to avoid this ?

You have to do the same for all armies if you want them to show up for every army.

Example:

russian-soldier-skin

russian-soldier-skin 2

russian-soldier-skin 3

...

up to number 8

ukrainian-soldier-skin

ukrainian-soldier-skin 2

ukrainian-soldier-skin 3

...

up to number 8

american-soldier-skin

american-soldier-skin 2

american-soldier-skin 3

....

up to number 8

Cover all the numbers (at least) to substitute all in game faces.

No cammo schemes please, they've been phased out by regulation in 2012.

I don't want no phone calls from moscow..

LOL funny exchange.

So @BTR I am playing with your Russian vehicles and the look really good. I am also playing wiht @Kieme's vehicles which look really good too. The Russian ones look a little too clean - perhaps your regulations require more frequent washing. Are you guys talking about throwing some mud on them? Either @BTR giving his blessing to @Kieme adding some dirt or @Kieme giving his blessing on sharing some dirt techniques? Just curious what we have next in store. A part from symbols from @BTR and more vehicles from @Kieme which is pretty clear...

Police them moostaches!

VS-17 addendum

Now that I think about it, the tape itself is legitimate, but the tape would be applied around the sides like a picture frame.  No need to actually change it unless you really want to/are not busy effectively reskinning every object in the game and making it more awesome.
