Does Global Conflict run on Windows 8?

Recommended Posts

Greetings!

I have played SC1 and SC2 off and on for many years, though not since a couple of years ago when my previous PC gave up the ghost. Tonight I just reinstalled Global Conflict on my current laptop -- I had bought the CD, and fortunately had recorded the license key, so installation and license activation went smoothly.

However when I try to launch the game, it crashes immediately upon drawing the map. The initial screens to select scenario, click "Play Campaign", change optional settings (like "Soft Build Limits") all go fine, but after clicking "Play" the map of western Europe (populated with units) comes up, but immediately an error box also comes up.

The error is: "Failed(draw_map_to_screen): Segmentation violation"

OS on my laptop is Windows 8.....and checking the web page for GC, I see the supported OS's stated as: OS: Windows XP/Vista/7

Version of GC that I have is I think the very first release version -- 1.00, according to the .txt files "VERSION NOTES" and "receipt" in the installation directory.

Just want to check if there is any way to run on Windows 8? Any patch etc that I need to download?

Thanks very much for any help.

After some googling and a fair bit of playing around with settings, I think I have got it running now:

SCGC Main Menu: turn off "Full Screen"

Properties for the desktop icon:

* Shortcut tab: add "-w" switch to target path

* Compatibility tab:

--- "Run this program in compatibility mode" checked; Win XP (SP3)

--- "Reduced color mode" checked; 16 bit

--- "Disable display scaling" checked

--- "Run this program as an administrator" checked

Right click on shortcut and select "run as administrator" when launching

Other than turning off "Full screen" on main menu and I think adding "-w" switch to target, I'm not sure which of those other settings are actually important :) But anyway seems to be launching the game successfully now so I'll stick with those settings.

Had the same problem myself and the helpdesk sorted it out for me within a few days.  This takes a while because the retention policies were different in 2010 and you need to be issued a new license to download the exe.

I'll be trying out SCII on my laptop using the Win10 technical preview soon.  Hopefully, it will be an easy adaptation.

Windows 10 anyone? 8.1 fine

I have 2 pc's with windows 10.  Both upgraded from Windows 7 and worked previously on both.  Now only one works perfectly fine but not on the other.  Both are of similar spec.  I'm getting the above error failed to draw to map segment.  I tried the above settings that make no difference.  Any other suggestions?
