CMBO and CMAK on Windows 8 OS ???

Recommended Posts

Hello, like many others I am being pressured into going from my good old XP OS to windows 8.

Are there any reasons why I can't play my CMBO and CMAK on a Windows 8 system?

As I also plan to get a new system it's a good question. I really like Win 7 and don't understand the point of Win 8 other than lining Bill G's pocket. I may demand to have Win 7 put on my new system, and I can recommend it (certainly for CM series) if that's the way you go.

CMx1 on Win 7 64bit Home Premium works on my modern systems.

You don't get fog effects however with Win 7. Maybe have a duel boot system, this way fog effects would still work with Win XP boot up. Just a suggestion.

That CMAK/CMBB bundle I bought a while back (which worked on Win 7) sure runs horribly on my (relatively new) Win 8.1 computer. That would be a 4770K CPU, 32G of RAM and an AMD7870 GPU. The graphics just chugs along. . . to the point of being unusable.

With the DRM issue's I've encountered, the effort in trying to install it on my 5 year old laptop (which also runs Win 8.1) is probably not worthwhile.

Ugh!

Update: Just upgraded video drivers and still no luck.

I'd been mucking with 3D options, compatability options, all to no avail. I kept searching and found another thread here that mentioned pressing Alt-Tab.

So, I Alt-Tab'ed out of CMBB and then back into it. . and it's now working.

One would think that if Battlefront is still selling CMAK/CMBB, that they would provide a patch for that. . .

So, I guess we're stuck with 1.04 and the Alt-tab hack, which is better than the slideshow I was seeing.

It's cheeky to charge for a product that can't run on Win 8 easily.

Mine just about works on a Win 8 netbook (Asus T100). Alt - tabbing or going to the Fisher Price screen and back, but it seems a bit random.

Guys, really? You expect Battlefront to allocate the funds and manpower to ensure that 12-13 year old games

run on the new(er) operating systems?

There's nothing "cheeky" about it, either. Both CMBB and CMAK as advertised on the Battlefront online "store"

have the option to "upgrade" both of 'em, for a mere five bucks to run on Windows "Vista". There's no

mention of later operating systems at all.

There's a point where being "thrifty" just doesn't pay off. Scrape the rust and dust off those wallets and

buy yourselves one of the newer games in the series.

I've got the newer game (CMBN); it just isn't as much fun. I still loathe the new interface which I feel was crippled by trying to be RT and WEGO at the same time and by a feeble quick battle system.

Over the years and a dozen or more PCs and laptops I've bought 3 copies of CMBO and two each of CMBB and CMAK.

I think you have to be more of an enthusiast or sim specialist to play the newer game - but I've got too broad a range of game likes - switching eras and game systems.

And I still visit the forum (don't like the new style do you Grandad?) for the sometimes interesting discussions and amusing rants that crop up.

I installed CMBB on my Win 8 machine and was having similar problems to what you guys are describing in this thread.  It seems these older games have trouble working with a multi-core machine in Win 8.  You have to set the affinity for the program to run off of one core processor.  read the last three posts in this thread on how this can be done in CMBB; you might be able to do in BO and AK.  It worked for me in BB.

I also use W8.1 and had problems when playing one of the cmx1 games. The game would be extremely slow but there is an easy fix, just alt+tab out and back into your game and it runs smooth again. A simple thing that might be overlooked. Good luck.

EDIT: damn, looks like someone already posted it, sorry!
