Growing frustrated with technical problems

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've been a long term Combat Mission player starting with the original series. I recently decided to come back to the series and playing the demo of CMBN I purchased a copy.

I patched my game up to 1.01. The game is fine except the troops are all invisible except for rifles and a few helmets here and there. I've done my research and I've tried everything that others have suggested on the forum. This includes patching up to 1.11, making sure compatibility mode is off, reinstalling, and reinstalling to a different directory.

When I patch up to 1.11 in addition to the STILL invisible troops the unit descriptions and labels are all wrong. As others have suggested I have carefully checked the order of patches and I believe everything I have done is correct. When patched to 1.11 the splash screen still reads 1.01 for some reason.

I have attached a dxdiag

First, your issue is not unheard of, but is indicative of a corrupted install. (From what a non-tech guy can tell.)

Second, your best bet is to open a help desk ticket.

Third, realize that I am not a tech guy.

Fourth, I -think- you may have left something in a "z" folder in your Data folder when you installed. If you have ANY mods installed, you need to remove them from the install directory until you're done installing the game. Then reimport them. Modded files will mess with the install.

Fifth, if the patch screen shows v1.01, then v1.11 did NOT install.

Sixth, see the instruction about opening the Help Desk ticket.

Good luck.

Ken

Some reasons for corrupt installs:

- incompatible Mods

- user permission issues (with UAC on); if you install the game with admin permissions but install a patch without, this may cause trouble because the game won't be able to access all the files

- user error during installation, such as choosing the wrong install path

- security software is interfering with the install or removes files after the installation. This can have a number of reasons, most commonly when your settings allow the software to do heuristic scanning (aka "guessing"). If you use heuristics, it's a good idea to NOT allow your AV software to remove files automatically at the same time.

- Windows security settings are interfering with the install. The Program Files folder is protected by Windows and you could run into various issues with installing there.

If your main screen shows 1.01 and not 1.11, then as Ken pointed out, you didn't install 1.11 correctly for one of the above reasons. Our helpdesk can try and help with troubleshooting this, but it can be lengthy since all of the above issues are not directly related to the software itself, but to outside factors. And for Anti-virus program issues, we usually have to defer to the tech support of that vendor.

I managed to fix the invisible soldiers bug! I installed to Documents then Battlefront. I also ran both the setup for the original game under compatibility mode for windows xp service pack 3 as well as run as admin. I did the same for the 1.11 patch. The soldiers can now be seen :)

The splash screen still reads 1.01 however and the unit descriptions are incorrect. A sherman tank has a unit description of IED triggerman and some infantry have descriptions like Medium Heavy, for example.

If the screen still says that the game is version 1.01, then the 1.11 patch is NOT being installed correctly. Is your installation within the 'Documents' directory ? Do you know if the 1.11 patch is possibly being installed into a 'sub-directory' of the game (i.e. - '..\Combat Mission Battle for Normandy\Combat Mission Battle for Normandy' - where the second directory should NOT exist) ? You may need to double-check the installation path for the patch to make sure it is NOT going into a sub-directory of the game (and possibly correct it if it is). The game should say '1.11' if the patch is properly installed.

The 'Windows XP SP 3' Compatibility mode is probably what is affecting the invisible soldiers (allowing them to be seen). However for a lot of customers running Windows 8, this solution didn't work (though it seems to be for you at the moment). With the 1.11 patch properly installed the 'compatibility mode' setting usually shouldn't be necessary.

Were MODS removed from the game when you patched (if you have any) ? Some mods cause problems with unit names and other text (typically some of 'Vin's animated text' mods).

If you have security/anti-virus software, then you will want to temporarily disable it while applying the patch and then set exceptions for the game executables within it so that it doesn't interfere with the game.

I managed to fix my problem. Thank you very much everyone!! I did a clean reinstall and I made sure the installation was out of the program files folder. The order is very important and I bought the upgrade to 2.0 then patched up to 2.12 and that seemed to fix things. Both the invisible infantry and wrong descriptions are gone!

Glad you got it sorted. Um, did you MAKE SURE that you deleted the errant installs? (Having duplicate files around may cause issues later.)

Does your splash screen show v2.12?

Yes. Before each install I made sure to delete the Battlefront folder before I installed again. The splash screen shows 2.12 so I think I'm good!
