Special Upgrade 4 Tech Tips   12/27/2016

Hi all! Now that Upgrade 4 is out and about in large quantities we have now discovered a few SNAFUs that happen out in the scary, real world that is home computing.  Fortunately the rate of problems is extremely small and so far most are easily worked around.  We've identified a few issues that have similar causes which we have clear instructions for work arounds here they are: 1.  CMRT Windows customers need to re-license their original key.  This is a result of improvements to the licensing system which CMBN, CMBS, and CMFB are already using.  To do this launch CMRT with the Upgrade and the first time enter your Engine 4 key.  Exit and then use the "Activate New Products" shortcut in your CMRT folder, then enter your Engine 3 license key.  That should do the trick. 2.  CMRT and CMBN MacOS customers have a similar situation as #2, however the "Activate New Products" is inside the Documents folder in their respective CM folders.  For CMBN you have to go through the process described above for each of your license keys.  There is no special order to follow. 3.  For CMBS and CMFB customers, you need to use the Activate New Products shortcut and enter your Upgrade 4 key.  If you launch the game and see a screen that says "LICENSE FAILURE: Base Game 4.0 is required." that is an indication you haven't yet gone through that procedure.  Provided you had a properly functioning copy before installing the Upgrade, that should be all you need to do.  If in the future you have to install from scratch on a new system you'll need to do the same procedure for both your original license key and your Upgrade 4.0 key. 4.  There's always a weird one and here it is.  A few Windows users are not getting "Activate New Products" shortcuts created during installation.  Apparently anti-virus software is preventing the installer from doing its job.  This might not be a problem right now, but it will prove to be an issue at some point in the future.  The solution is to create your own shortcut using the following steps: Disable your anti-virus software before you do anything. Go to your Desktop, right click on the Desktop itself, select NEW->SHORTCUT, use BROWSE to locate the CM EXE that you are trying to fix. The location is then written out. After it type in a single space and then paste this:

      -showui

Click NEXT and give your new Shortcut a name (doesn't matter what). Confirm that and you're done. Double click on the new Shortcut and you should be prompted to license whatever it is you need to license. At this time we have not identified any issues that have not been worked around.  Let's hope it stays that way Steve

Instructions for Upgrading CMFI to Engine 4   04/09/2017

Upgrading CMFI to Engine 4 requires prior product purchases be relicensed.  This is because we've updated the copy protection software.  This is a one time thing which also affected CMBN Mac and CMRT for both platforms, so some of you will find these instructions familiar.  The method of relicensing is flexible, but here's the optimal method: 1.  After installing using the Full or Update installers, launch the game.  You'll be prompted to license.  Enter you Engine 4 license key and exit. 2.  Use the "Activate New Products" short cut in your CMFI folder to launch the game with the license window.  Enter your Engine 3 license key.  If you bought the Upgrade 3 + 4 Bundle then you can skip this step. 3.  Use the "Activate New Products" short again and enter your Engine 2 license key *IF* you have one, otherwise skip this step.  Note that CMFI started it's life was Engine 2, therefore if you owned the game prior to Upgrade 3 coming out then your CMFI Base Game license key is your Engine 2 key. 4.  If you purchased Gustav Line as a separate product, use "Activate New Products" again and enter your Gustav license key.  If you bought Gustav as a Bundle, it should already be activated. If you should run into any issues, try to figure out what key is missing (the game should give you adequate feedback for that) and use "Activate New Products" link to allow you to enter whichever key is needed.  If you still have a problem, especially if you bought a Gustav Line Bundle (some keys definitely didn't transition correctly!), file with our Help Desk and include the license key you're having problems with: https://battlefront.mojohelpdesk.com If you can not find your license keys sent to you by email, no problem.  Go to your store account and check your Order History.  Keys and download links are always there for you unless you ordered a "hardgoods only" option.  In that case your license keys are on the back of the CD/DVD cases that came in the mail. Also good to know... if a download link in an email confirmation doesn't work, go to Order History and try from there.

      Forum Reorganization   10/12/2017

We've reorganized our Combat Mission Forums to reflect the fact that most of you are now running Engine 4 and that means you're all using the same basic code.  Because of that, there's no good reason to have the discussion about Combat Mission spread out over 5 separate sets of Forums.  There is now one General Discussion area with Tech Support and Scenario/Mod Tips sub forums.  The Family specific Tech Support Forums have been moved to a new CM2 Archives area and frozen in place. You might also notice we dropped the "x" from distinguishing between the first generation of CM games and the second.  The "x" was reluctantly adopted back in 2005 or so because at the time we had the original three CM games on European store shelves entitled CM1, CM2, and CM3 (CMBO, CMBB, and CMAK).  We didn't want to cause confusion so we added the "x".  Time has moved on and we have to, so the "x" is now gone from our public vocabulary as it has been from our private vocabulary for quite a while already.  Side note, Charles *NEVER* used the "x" so now we're all speaking the same language as him.  Which is important since he is the one programming them

Gustav Line QB AAR - Allied

Recommended Posts

The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can, and keep moving on.

Ulysses S. Grant

Watch this space.

Myself and GreenAsJade are starting up a Gustav Line BETA AAR. This will be the thread where I will post my side of events.

This will be a medium QB, Meeting Engagement. Neither of us has bought our forces yet.. expect a good pre-battle analysis coming up in the next couple of days from me. Not sure what my opponent has planned. ;)

Excellent. Good to see a QB in an "official" AAR. :)

QBs are my favorite actually. I play the occasional scenario (have two going on right now) but a QB ME with roughly equal forces really separates the men from the boys. ;)

Allies.

I will be fielding the Red Devils (Brit para).. and some unknown support assets.. I haven't decided on those yet, but the main force will be airborne infantry on both sides.

Okay. Next question: can you give us a rough idea of the size of the total force on each side? That's a huge area for anything less than a regiment, I should think.

Less than a Regiment. ;)

Well, in fact that is what I assumed. But like I said, it's a big, complicated map. You could spend your whole time swanning around and never come to blows, though I assume you will. I think this game depends on both sides being determined to have a fight. Kind of like classical era wars up through the middle ages and even into Napoleonic times.

I suggested this map exactly because I really liked the covered avenues of approach, even though it looks wide open. I think it's going to be a very interesting fight personally and quite a challenge. I think its around 900m square... with that though I do expect sight lines to be very short and most firefights to be at arms length.. key will be to not walk into too many ambushes.

I played GaJ once before.. and though that battle was an easy victory for me I don't think it was a balanced scenario and when he was defending in anything like even odds he put up a good fight... so I expect good things from him in this battle. if nothing else he will be motivated to do well.. nobody wants to be embarrassed in a public AAR.

Hmm, the key will be to ATTACK EVERYWHERE!!! At once! With verve and elan. Remember what Sun Tzu said about the fog. (Or, I may be thinking about Mel Torme.) Nevermind. You know what we expect.

Which side are you playing, Axis or Allies?

Michael

Jeez Louise Emrys... perchance you did actually *look* at the thread title before you clicked on it, didn't you???

Or is that just senility setting in? I understand that you might have already read the 7 previous posts. Perhaps that's what threw you.

Your ability to analyze and tactically use the ground around you (and to know how your enemy can use the same ground) can transform the terrain into a valuable ally.

I am going to do a down and dirty high level terrain analysis here. At this point all I am interested in is identifying the key pieces of terrain and the main avenues of advance.

First of all this is mountainous terrain, devoid of most cover (other than that presented by the covered approaches caused by LOS dead zones, intervening elevation, etc.), as is about 1 square kilometer.. or it encompasses a grid square in size.

This image illustrates how I have identified the main avenues of advance (in red), the key pieces of terrain (Key Terrain) for this battle.. he who controls these terrain features should be able to control the flow of the battle.

8555220664_a7f521f1bd_b.jpg

KT1 I feel is the most important piece of terrain on the map.. almost all of the covered approaches (red areas) converge on this one spot.

KT2, KT3, and KT 4 will play an important role for me in the opening phases of the battle.

KT5, and KT6 lie closer to my opponents side of the map, so of course I expect him to place some kind of firepower on them as soon as he can.. perhaps a tank or two.

The hills are mostly flat plateaus.. this will make it tough to hide combat elements on top of them.. especially from anything placed on KT2, which is the highest point on the map.

Now with all this in mind I am of course aware that my opponent could indeed approach over the back sides of some of these hills and ridge-lines... I do feel that this could be exhausting for his troops though, unless he spends some precious points on transport. We will see very soon I think.

Here are a couple images showing the map from my side of the field:

It was one of those oops moments. I only noted Bil's name and that it was an AAR when I read the title. After I posted and went back to the top of the page I noticed that it mentioned Allied. Too late. Considering the hundreds of totally egregious errors I notice in the pages but don't even bother to mention, I don't feel too bad about it.

This map looks kind of dreary. We'd better get some Fallschirmjagers. Or at least an Elefant or two. ;)

Definitely; why don't you guys change the weather, time of day, and/or season to show off the graphics better?

Also, can you make the map available in the Repository so that we can view it in 3D, or are there terrain features only available in the new module?

The surprise is half the battle. Many things are half the battle, losing is half the battle. Let's think about what's the whole battle.

David Mamet

Okay, here are my unit purchases. I purposely went without any indirect weapons... I wanted to maximize my direct fire capability as I have a feeling that getting a good indirect spot is going to be a challenge in this game and I really dislike firing blind.

The Parachute Companies are pure infantry.. I stripped out all of their inherent support (snipers, AT teams etc.).

I wanted to get enough armor to make a difference.. I have no clue what GaJ is going to field armor wise and I wanted to maximize that aspect of my force.. and I did not want to drag around AT guns to provide that long range AT role so went with three Shermans and two Stuarts to give me some recon punch.

This is the force I will be fighting in this scenario:
