Artillery and Counterinsurgency:The Soviet Experience in Afghanistan

Recommended Posts

Written by Lester Grau of CALL's Foreign Military Studies Office, this is an excellent overview of the Russian artillery war in Afghanistan. It starts with how they planned to fight, the enormous obstacles they encountered in doctrine and weaponry when things proved wildly different, and how they adapted to the radically unanticipated situations in which they found themselves. In some cases, they adopted unique solutions to formidable artillery problems. Grau is the author of an equally great analysis of the Grozny battle in Chechnya.
