Deer Trail, Colorado (population 600 or so) is to vote on a local ordinance that would allow drone hunting licenses and bounties for shooting down UAVs, according to ABC affiliate KMGH-TV.

Those with a valid drone hunting license will be rewarded US$100 if they present "identifiable parts" of UAVs "known to be owned or operated by the United States federal government," the draft ordinance states.

"We do not want drones in town," local Phillip Steel, who came up with the draft, tells KMGH-TV. "They fly in town, they get shot down."

If passed, the ordinance would see one-year drone hunting licenses sell for $25, and there's talk of a novelty drone-hunting festival to boost tourism.

To Steel it's a serious issue, however. "This is a very symbolic ordinance. Basically, I do not believe in the idea of a surveillance society, and I believe we are heading that way."

The town board is set to vote on the ordinance on Aug. 6.

Say that to the low flying cop.... :P

Florida police use motorised paragliders

"We can see a lot from the air and it's an easy and inexpensive way to bring aerial search capabilities to everyday law enforcement," said Lt Eakins.

"By being more visible from the air than on the ground, we hope our aerial presence will also be a deterrent."

Like I said:

:D

"Our agency is pretty innovative, we like to think out of the box and experiment with new ideas. The more we fly these paragliders, the more uses we'll find for them"

Sure they will find more uses for Operation Sore ;)

Robots *are* getting closer to Terminator capabilities.

Some pretty impressive videos about keeping balance here.

And then stuff about Wildcat. In WW2 they used horses and mules to help carrying things in difficult terrain.

In the last video you see Wildcat doing the same.

Drones used to try to smuggle contraband into jail

Drones appear to have become the latest tool for those wishing to smuggle contraband into prisons.

Four people have been arrested after a remote-controlled helicopter was allegedly used to fly tobacco into Calhoun state prison, Georgia.

Prison officers noticed the device hovering over the prison yard and alerted the police.

A similar attempt in Canada has led a prison officers' union to call for tighter security in jails

….

It follows a similar attempt at the weekend in a prison in Canada.

A drone was spotted flying over the Gatineau jail in Quebec on Sunday. Guards there failed to find either the device, its payload or those flying it.

Remote-controlled flying devices are becoming the tool of choice for those determined to smuggle in contraband, Stephane Lemaire, president of Quebec's correctional officers' union, tod the Ottawa Sun.

"Usually the drones are carrying small packages of drugs or other illicit substances," he said.

"Now that drones are relatively cheap to buy, they've become the best way to smuggle drugs inside," he added.

He said that the union had put pressure on the government to bolster security to deal with the new methods.

Drones, more usually associated with the military, are increasingly being used in civilian life to make small deliveries, from pizzas to vital medicines.

i'd have thought in China with their population surely a bicycle delivery system in a city would be more efficient. With a drone how does it ensure it is delivered to the intended recipient - how would a drone cope with a block of flats? - do customers have to dash to the roof and wait for delivery….
