Schrullenhaft
It's possible you may be referring to a message that is actually coming from your monitor. If that is the case, then what you may be running into is the 'resolution selection process' and the high vertical refresh rates it may use initially. The maximum resolution for the CMx1 series is 1600 x 1200. However only 4:3 'standard aspect ratio' resolutions are supported. When you initially launch the games they immediately run the 'resolution selection process' if no 'preferences' file is found. The game will use the highest resolution that is closest to what you are currently running your desktop at. So if you were running 1600 x 900 (a 'widescreen' resolution), then the game would probably try out 1152 x 864 (since the 'vertical' portion of the resolution is the limiting factor here). However at this resolution the game will run it at the HIGHEST vertical refresh rate that the VIDEO CARD supports. This MAY be beyond what your monitor supports. So in our example it may run 1152 x 864 at 160Hz or whatever your video card may support at that resolution. Some monitors, when the receive a resolution beyond what they are capable of displaying will provide a message to that fact, such as 'out of range' or 'input not supported', etc. Depending on how your monitor handles such frequencies it may just blank the screen with the error message. Some other monitors may disable the input and you would have to power the monitor off and then on for it to display again. If your monitor does this (it will go into a power save state I assume), then you may want to 'power cycle' the monitor for it to display again. If your monitor will keep 'watch' on the input signal and display something as soon as it appears compatible. If that is the case, then just keep watch and the game will then try the next lower vertical refresh rate at that same resolution in about 10 seconds or so (as long as you don't press a mouse button or click the keyboard - which may select the resolution that you monitor may be incapable of displaying). In our example the next selection may be 1152 x 864 at 120Hz, which may still be beyond your monitor's capabilities. Once the vertical refresh rate of 60Hz is hit, then the next selection will be at a lower resolution, but again at the highest refresh rate that the video card is capable of handling. So that could be 1024 x 768 at 160Hz. If your monitor is capable of displaying the resolution you should see a box in the middle of the screen with the resolution and possibly the vertical refresh rate listed in it. You may want to make note of what you currently run your desktop at, this can possibly be done from the Display control panel or some sort of On Screen Menu information display of your monitor.
