Special Upgrade 4 Tech Tips   12/27/2016

Hi all! Now that Upgrade 4 is out and about in large quantities we have now discovered a few SNAFUs that happen out in the scary, real world that is home computing.  Fortunately the rate of problems is extremely small and so far most are easily worked around.  We've identified a few issues that have similar causes which we have clear instructions for work arounds here they are: 1.  CMRT Windows customers need to re-license their original key.  This is a result of improvements to the licensing system which CMBN, CMBS, and CMFB are already using.  To do this launch CMRT with the Upgrade and the first time enter your Engine 4 key.  Exit and then use the "Activate New Products" shortcut in your CMRT folder, then enter your Engine 3 license key.  That should do the trick. 2.  CMRT and CMBN MacOS customers have a similar situation as #2, however the "Activate New Products" is inside the Documents folder in their respective CM folders.  For CMBN you have to go through the process described above for each of your license keys.  There is no special order to follow. 3.  For CMBS and CMFB customers, you need to use the Activate New Products shortcut and enter your Upgrade 4 key.  If you launch the game and see a screen that says "LICENSE FAILURE: Base Game 4.0 is required." that is an indication you haven't yet gone through that procedure.  Provided you had a properly functioning copy before installing the Upgrade, that should be all you need to do.  If in the future you have to install from scratch on a new system you'll need to do the same procedure for both your original license key and your Upgrade 4.0 key. 4.  There's always a weird one and here it is.  A few Windows users are not getting "Activate New Products" shortcuts created during installation.  Apparently anti-virus software is preventing the installer from doing its job.  This might not be a problem right now, but it will prove to be an issue at some point in the future.  The solution is to create your own shortcut using the following steps: Disable your anti-virus software before you do anything. Go to your Desktop, right click on the Desktop itself, select NEW->SHORTCUT, use BROWSE to locate the CM EXE that you are trying to fix. The location is then written out. After it type in a single space and then paste this:

Click NEXT and give your new Shortcut a name (doesn't matter what). Confirm that and you're done. Double click on the new Shortcut and you should be prompted to license whatever it is you need to license. At this time we have not identified any issues that have not been worked around.  Let's hope it stays that way Steve

      Forum Reorganization   10/12/2017

We've reorganized our Combat Mission Forums to reflect the fact that most of you are now running Engine 4 and that means you're all using the same basic code.  Because of that, there's no good reason to have the discussion about Combat Mission spread out over 5 separate sets of Forums.  There is now one General Discussion area with Tech Support and Scenario/Mod Tips sub forums.  The Family specific Tech Support Forums have been moved to a new CM2 Archives area and frozen in place. You might also notice we dropped the "x" from distinguishing between the first generation of CM games and the second.  The "x" was reluctantly adopted back in 2005 or so because at the time we had the original three CM games on European store shelves entitled CM1, CM2, and CM3 (CMBO, CMBB, and CMAK).  We didn't want to cause confusion so we added the "x".  Time has moved on and we have to, so the "x" is now gone from our public vocabulary as it has been from our private vocabulary for quite a while already.  Side note, Charles *NEVER* used the "x" so now we're all speaking the same language as him.  Which is important since he is the one programming them

  1. Hello: Installing it on a new Asus Zenbook (Windows 10) and get a message saying "Could not initialize Direct3D graphics". Any thoughts? Thanks.
  2. Hi I just bought a fancy new PC running Win10 I re-installed CMBN, CMFI, CMRT and CMFB yesterday with all modules and updates - and here comes the funny bit: CMBN runs fine and save file are placed on the D: drive, as intended CMFI runs fine but files are saved on a "OneDrive" location - and otherwise runs fine - but I can't access incoming email files via the game. CMRT runs fine but files are saved on a "OneDrive" location - and otherwise runs fine - and I CAN access incoming email files via the game CMFB runs fine but files are saved on a "OneDrive" location - and otherwise runs fine - but I can't access incoming email files via the game. What gives? BTW when trying to get windows to save doc's and pictures, on D: instead of on OneDrive in the settings, it will not accept this setting - it will not "stick" Any solution - other than reinstalling once again (sigh) and not changing the location i.e. installing everything on the C:drive, as I read in some other thread? Best regards Morten Lundsteen Denmark
  3. Windows 10 users: It seems that FRAPS is not entirely Windows10 compatible. In my case, it worked once and then fails ever after. Googling an alternative, I came accross BANDICAM; https://www.bandicam.com/fraps-alternative/ and https://www.bandicam.com/support/start2/. I'm favorably impressed so far with their free download version. I have not used the video recording tools yet but taking screenshots is straightforward and created as JPEG (.jpg) files instead of the FRAPS's free version less robust Bitmap (.bmp) files. For those Windows 10 users now in need of a FRAPS alternative, check out and consider Bandicam. Good luck and good gaming.
  4. I'd like to check out Command Ops 2 Core Engine on a Windows 10 o/s. I've installed and run successfully on a legacy Windows Vista desktop machine. From my Win10 machine, I'm having trouble getting a download. Problem seems to be with Lock 'N Load websites. All and any help is welcome. I successfully accessed http://www.panthergames.com/. I click "Buy Now" which took me to https://store.lnlpublishing.com/index.php?route=account/login. It required me to be a registered user. I previously registered as a new user but never received a confirmation email. When I try to login as an existing user it errors out saying "no match" for my userid/password. When I try to register again it says my ID is already taken. I'd log a support ticket for UserID/password help but this site requires that you need to login before you can create a ticket! Any suggestions on how to "purchase" for free and download? Also, is Command Ops 2 even playable on Windows 10? Thanks for any help.
  5. I have finally left the 20th Century behind me embraced the 21st instead. This meant upgrading to a more robust gaming PC with a Windows 10 o/s. (@LukeFF would be rightfully bemused that my desktop gaming rig still runs on Windows Vista.) The Luddite in me still enjoys a number of legacy games. I've successfully installed "Call of Duty Game of the Year" (circa 2003) from CD with key without any patches. However, the game fails to run. No errors occur. Changing "compatibility mode" provides no solution. The same holds true for "Call of Duty United Offensive" and "Call of Duty 2". These games run successfully on my WinVista machine though . . . I've done some online research but am leery of the "no CD hacks" solutions. Has anyone in this august company of gamers encountered this (or similar) problems? How can I solve this? Thank you for any and all suggestions.
  6. I've installed CMFI on a Widows10 machine. The install created the Game Files and User Data directories on OneDrive. That's a cloud storage location. I want my Game files on my computer's local drive instead so I don't need internet access to play. My old machine installed them in the Documents directory on my C drive. The game is installed on my D drive. How do I reconfigure CMFI to move and find those Fortress Italy folders locally on my machine where I can specify? Thank you.
  7. I made some small edits to the 1939 campaign and saved it under a new name. The saved file (.cgn) is listed in the same directory as the Battlefront supplied games. A new directory was created as well when I saved the game. However, it doesn't show up as a game in the game listing and I can't play it. Any ideas? For those reading this and wondering whether the game is compatible with Windows 10 - It is - it's worked flawlessly. However, you MUST to install the latest patch. (it's a great game!!!)
