Special Upgrade 4 Tech Tips   12/27/2016

Hi all! Now that Upgrade 4 is out and about in large quantities we have now discovered a few SNAFUs that happen out in the scary, real world that is home computing.  Fortunately the rate of problems is extremely small and so far most are easily worked around.  We've identified a few issues that have similar causes which we have clear instructions for work arounds here they are: 1.  CMRT Windows customers need to re-license their original key.  This is a result of improvements to the licensing system which CMBN, CMBS, and CMFB are already using.  To do this launch CMRT with the Upgrade and the first time enter your Engine 4 key.  Exit and then use the "Activate New Products" shortcut in your CMRT folder, then enter your Engine 3 license key.  That should do the trick. 2.  CMRT and CMBN MacOS customers have a similar situation as #2, however the "Activate New Products" is inside the Documents folder in their respective CM folders.  For CMBN you have to go through the process described above for each of your license keys.  There is no special order to follow. 3.  For CMBS and CMFB customers, you need to use the Activate New Products shortcut and enter your Upgrade 4 key.  If you launch the game and see a screen that says "LICENSE FAILURE: Base Game 4.0 is required." that is an indication you haven't yet gone through that procedure.  Provided you had a properly functioning copy before installing the Upgrade, that should be all you need to do.  If in the future you have to install from scratch on a new system you'll need to do the same procedure for both your original license key and your Upgrade 4.0 key. 4.  There's always a weird one and here it is.  A few Windows users are not getting "Activate New Products" shortcuts created during installation.  Apparently anti-virus software is preventing the installer from doing its job.  This might not be a problem right now, but it will prove to be an issue at some point in the future.  The solution is to create your own shortcut using the following steps: Disable your anti-virus software before you do anything. Go to your Desktop, right click on the Desktop itself, select NEW->SHORTCUT, use BROWSE to locate the CM EXE that you are trying to fix. The location is then written out. After it type in a single space and then paste this:

Click NEXT and give your new Shortcut a name (doesn't matter what). Confirm that and you're done. Double click on the new Shortcut and you should be prompted to license whatever it is you need to license. At this time we have not identified any issues that have not been worked around.  Let's hope it stays that way Steve

      Forum Reorganization   10/12/2017

We've reorganized our Combat Mission Forums to reflect the fact that most of you are now running Engine 4 and that means you're all using the same basic code.  Because of that, there's no good reason to have the discussion about Combat Mission spread out over 5 separate sets of Forums.  There is now one General Discussion area with Tech Support and Scenario/Mod Tips sub forums.  The Family specific Tech Support Forums have been moved to a new CM2 Archives area and frozen in place. You might also notice we dropped the "x" from distinguishing between the first generation of CM games and the second.  The "x" was reluctantly adopted back in 2005 or so because at the time we had the original three CM games on European store shelves entitled CM1, CM2, and CM3 (CMBO, CMBB, and CMAK).  We didn't want to cause confusion so we added the "x".  Time has moved on and we have to, so the "x" is now gone from our public vocabulary as it has been from our private vocabulary for quite a while already.  Side note, Charles *NEVER* used the "x" so now we're all speaking the same language as him.  Which is important since he is the one programming them

  1. Hello: Installing it on a new Asus Zenbook (Windows 10) and get a message saying "Could not initialize Direct3D graphics". Any thoughts? Thanks.
  2. Good morning I'm reaching out to see if i can get some help. My resolution will not change to 1980x1080 in final blitzkrieg no matter if I change it in program(match desktop) or the display size txt file. The computer and monitor recognize its displaying at 1080p but it doesn't appear that way to me. I have re-installed the game already and still no change. My current setup is GTX1060 3GB, 388.00 drivers, 16GB, i5 4430. I did notice this problem when I played the demo but thought nothing of it. I have Black sea also in engine 4.0 and it looks great in the same settings. The photo isn't giving an accurate image of what i see, it might be a vsync issue. I have checked my nvidia settings and turned off AA. When I enter the game the title screen looks pixelated and low res. Please help. CM Final Blitzkrieg 2017-10-28 18-06-17-55 (2).bmp
  3. Can someone recommend a good/very good graphics card for playing CM on a Mac Pro (early 2009)? I am right now playing CM on a late-2012 iMac, with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M, and 512GB of VRAM. Graphics performance is ok, but not great. I'd like to play using my 27" Dell display, but this is too much for the iMac - I have to dial the quality way down to pan smoothly and still the iMac graphics system crashes periodically. Is it reasonable to think that a Mac Pro from 2009, running OSX 10.11 from an SSD, will have better overall performance if I get a good graphics card? Can anyone give me any guidance here? I'm not a PC person, and it appears that there are about a bizzilion graphics card choices, but everyone's experience is with a Microsoft OS. Can I get a maybe 2015-vintage graphics card that gives a good $/performance balance? Thanks!!
  4. Hi there, I recently bought the game and I'm having a problem with screen resolution. I cannot get resolution to the highest possible level. Selecting desktop option does nothing and only available are 1048 and 1280. I have windows 10 with Ndvidia 960m graphic card. Would appreciatesome help.
  5. Hello I am well aware that the CM graphics engine seems to load hi or low res textures for terrain depending on how far away from the camera they are. This is for all the CM titles. Some terrain types/features which are more 3D (like wheat fields or vineyards) actually look like flat terrain when viewed at ranges beyond this high res texture loading range. Although I understand that this is a way to reduce the graphical load on the PC/gfx card, it doesn't really look too nice when you pan/zoom around the map and you see the high res textures swapping out fro lower res versions. I am wondering whether this seemingly arbitrary "radius from camera" distance can be modified to suit higher specked systems. It does seem odd that this arbitrary "radius" range at which high res textures flip to has (in my experience) has remained fixed from when CM first came out, despite PC systems and graphics cards becoming more capable. Are we stuck with this range or can it be modified? Unless someone can correct me, I am quite sure that because of the (idiosyncratic/unorthodox) way CM graphics have been designed/coded, the game engine does not allow higher performance systems/graphics cards to process the game graphics as well as they would/should. It's like the graphics performance bottleneck is more a function of the game coding than it is of the PC system, which really is a shame. PS: I have also realised that this dynamic transitional low/high res texture change that occurs is most pronounced when the high res/close range textures are not very similar to the distant/low res textures (of course). Would be interesting to hear from terrain modders how/if they ever deal with this issue. Where/what exactly are the low res distant textures anyway? I have seen mod terrain graphics with the word "distant" in them as well as "mini" and I think both are related to the "low res" textures that get loaded.
  6. I've recently upgraded my PC and moved from an Nvidia to a 280x AMD graphics card. I've been missing the 'Half Refresh Rate' option that Nvidia offers, but found the following work around for AMD. Download 'Radeon Pro' from http://www.radeonpro.info/ Tick option: 'Vsync control - always on unde ra custom profile for whatever Combat Mission game you desire, along with 'Dynamic Framerate control' locked to 30. This was greatly improve your FPS and smoothness. Happy fighting.
  7. I would like to offer a suggestion to battlefront that could improve the overall quality of the game and strategy. Adding the ability to make map graphics. Explained: The op order screen does a great job of following the standard op order format. A feature that allows either a MGRS map to add graphics for phase lines or that allows you to place notes on the 3d map itself would greatly improve the planning process either in setup phase or in actual play. Players that prefer RT over wego should also be able to do this during a game pause. I love turn based but RT adds an element of realism I prefer for responding to changing battlefield conditions in smaller scenarios. I am new to the CM series of games so if this is possible I do apologize.. I read nothing in the supplied manual that eluded to this ability. I have resorted to hand drawn map sketches on paper which add a lot of realism in my opinion but are subject to the users drawing ability which was not my strong suit. A few simple graphics or an improved tactical map would help out a great deal. I think it is an excellent game and far superior to most strategy games out there. I think an addition such as this would only improve the experience. Besides the France based developers for wargame have included this and I know battle front can put them to shame. Any who agree with me please post on this thread. If you dont I would love to hear your reasons. Again I think this game is excellent and far more mature than any of the the strategy games that are available now. That being said as an Infantryman I was always taught to improve my position any chance I had.
  8. I tried running CMBO for Mac under OS 9 on a Mac Powerbook TI 867 mhz. WEIRD graphics. I knew/hoped there'd be a patch, but where to find it at this late date. Searched and searched, finally found the right one for the ATI Radeon Velocity 9000 card standard on this machine and a few others. ATI no longer supports their cards for Macs, not ones this old at least, but third party sources still have 'em. My hats off to these guys: http://gona.mactar.hu/ATI_Mac/#RAVE This is the one that worked for me!
