I had a German teacher who I met up with in Berlin - long ago. She had been raised in Berlin, but did not know about the Soviet monument at Treptower Park (below).  I told her the story that the communists had circulated about the monument - that a Soviet soldier during the battle for the Reichstag had rescued a German girl wandering in the street and that this represented the Soviet Union leading "the new Germany" (communist East Germany) to the grand socialist future. My teacher, who was quite a reserved and dignified woman, did not hesitate in her response - and I will never forget it:

"So when did he find the time to do that, in between raping her mother and her sister?"

But these facts are well documentated and widely condemned, aren't they? The mass rape of millions of women AND children (and not only in Germany, but also in 'liberated' Russia, Poland, Hungary, Rumania, Bulgaria, the Baltic states and so on and so forth) and all the other attrocities of the Red Army are mostly ignored. It should be possible to condemn that without being accused of defending the attrocities of the Nazis. On the other hand, I guess it's just shame about making a pact with the devil in the name of freedom and justice to defeat another one.

But I agree with Lethaface. Better let it rest. Especially on this forum.

    Well said.

When you say "the rest" I presume you are talking about the systematic massacres of entire villages in Poland and all points East (not forgetting Oradour-sur-Glane in France of course) that the Germans came across?  Or was it the rape of women before they were gassed?  For the folks who lost their entire families in WW2 thanks to the civilizing effects of the German Army & SS, there may not be quite the same sense of indignation.

Thanks for the straw man morality lesson - of course I agree with everything you point out. I hate the Nazis and what they did - more than you could possibly know.  The point of my original post was twofold - that films of the use of heavy artillery weapons in the streets of Berlin were pure propaganda produced after the battle was over and - secondly - that people need to be careful about glorifying the communist "liberators."

I notice that you make no criticism of the comments above that make jokes about the systematic - and officially permitted - raping of an entire female population - including children. That tells me a lot.

I hope you realize that scenes like these were filmed in Berlin after the battle was over - just wanton destruction for propaganda effect. Then, of course, there was the raping of nearly every women (regardless of age) and girl in Berlin. Can't look at scenes like this without getting sick thinking about the rest.

I think you meant the Ford GPA. I have an account of a guy who literally drove an amphibious Jeep around the world. An epic adventure. The sad part was the planned endpoint was the factory where the vehicle was built. He couldn't get any executives to come out and so much as take a look because they considered the GPA to be a 'failure' and refused to acknowledge its existence.

Correct - it is a U.S. Ford GPA - a good example of Lend-Lease aid to Soviets during Second World War.

I really look forward to battle videos of this module on Youtube. I only hope I won't need to wait too long. Some people get those videos up quite quickly so it all depends on when the module is released.

I know the subject has been discussed before, but - based on the latest tech available - what is the best software to take screenshots and videos? I have been frustrated in trying this. Thanks.

"Bluecher in the Woods" (ref; Movie, Waterloo, 1970)...Ok, so you came out of the woods to finally give praise to this extraordinary Tactical Game Series :-)

Haven't seen the movie, but you have definitely perked my interest. With regard to coming out of the woods as it relates to this excellent scenario, I think this shot says it all. Cheers!

Always good to hear a recommendation.  Took a look at the scenario and it looks interesting.  Germans are attacking so am assuming that is the side to play - there is no info in the scenario info list.

Yes, I played the Germans, although I am thinking about playing it again as the Americans (both sides have some great equipment to play around with). The scenario will feed you units at different start points - I did not play the units where they arrived, but moved them (while still in the rear zone) to fit my own scheme of maneuver and it worked great. Hope you enjoy this scenario.

  10. I don't usually take the time to do something like this, but I just finished the battle "Chaos at Ferme Diedenhove" and I have to say it was the most enjoyable scenario that I have ever played in this series - and I like this series a lot. I don't know who the scenario creator was, but you captured more than just history in this scenario, you seemed to truly get the feeling of the "Battle of the Bulge" - the U.S. Army's largest battle (speaking as someone who as has spent a lot of time reading about the battle and touring the Ardennes battlefield). Naturally, all of the scenario creator's efforts would have not been possible without the developers, who stuck with this series to create an extraordinarily great tactical game of World War II. Outstanding job all around!

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is how EDUCATIONAL CM is. Not just becoming intimately familiar with period weapons and their capabilities, or the reading details of historical battles at historical locations, there's also applying tactics straight out of field manuals.

    MikeyD has a point!

I'll see if something can be done. I know someone who knows someone who knows someone who might be able to do me a favor.

Or maybe everyone can just keep on doing what they're doing on this module - looks like we will all be in for an awesome addition to this great game.

Just wondering if the standard we hold Combat Mission games to is higher than that of other games? That is, the standard needs to be .  When one sees a blemish, and the blemish may be different things to different people, we exaggerate the importance of the blemish as far as actual game play goes. It's an psychological thing perhaps I'm thinking. The games are immersive and that immersion is appealing, so when that one finds that one blemish that breaks the immersion for them, they're passionate about the blemish. In a way this passion towards the blemish is a credit to the passion and immersion the CM games can bring.   I think the combat flight simulators fall into this category as well but that's about it.

That'll happen when you have to fight for survival from the very beginning and find fascists and capitalists arrayed against you from within and without. Haiti has had a similar experience - It's hard to have a stable and prosperous society when you have a giant target on your back. Cuba survived when all of the socialist governments in South America that tolerated liberalism within their borders and didn't militarize their societies fell to coups and the USSR outlived the other socialist governments that were crushed in 1918-20.

A "stable and prosperous society" does not need to put huge portions of its population in gulags or to starve them to death...so I guess you are saying that all of that was the fault of "fascists or capitalists."  Or do you mean that all of those who suffered and died under the Communists deserved it, because they were "fascists and capitalists"? If so, I hope you stay out of politics.

So what I suggest is that it was much more likely for the Russians to have done much better than for the Germans to have done much better -- though no one at the time knew this.

You raise some good points, but I think that if the Nazis had begun the invasion in May - as originally planned - and not had to have bailed out Mussolini in the Balkans and Africa - it would have been lights out for the Soviet Union. Good thing for all of us that Adolf had a strange attachment to Il Duce...
