  1. How is this a win? He traded germanys reputation as an ally for (maybe) some inner-party peace. After the announcement of the Marder delivery the Ukraine it was clear that western tanks would be next. Yet nothing was decided or prepared. Plus, If the decision would have been made earlier replacements for the Bundeswehr would arrive sooner. One year after "Zeitenwende" the Bundeswehr is definetly weaker now.
  2. I would more or less agree if you mean germany since 1990. Throughout the cold war era the Bundeswehr was certainly not a weak link among the NATO members and I do not see any indecisive Bundeskanzler during that period either. A chancellor like Adenauer or Schmidt would have never gambled with germanys trust and credibility as a reliable ally like Scholz ist doing right now.
  3. In contrast to the soviet OOB, we would see a number of T-72´s in frontline use with the NVA. No T-62, a lot of upgraded T-55 and only very few BMP-2´s. Interestingly, in contrast to german army tradition, "Auftragstaktik" (mission command) was not in use in the NVA. To have the NVA would be great. Those helmets for me epitomize the cold war. And as it has been said, they would have been in the forefront of an Invasion. There even was a "Blücher-Orden" (award) already prepared for the first units to cross the rhine.
  4. If anything I would expect only negative effects on military aspects from direct political influence. I am not an expert on that, but from what I have read the classical political commissars were an early WW2-thing only.
  5. Yes, it is 2022 not 1982 but a lot of shortcomings that the experts predicted throughout the cold war would hinder soviet advances, show today in the russian army. F.E. the lack of low-level initiative and leadership. Some frontline troops appear hardly aware of the situation they are in. Mission command is a far cry in such circumstandes. Just like in Afghanistan and Chechnya we see troops attacking without proper recon, tanks and APC´s bunched up without infrantry support and overall poor logistics.
  6. Stunning, and those three guys in the foreground... I wonder If they could at least tilt that rocket pod a bid Up and down.
  7. You are correct. Wikipedia says it too: "Because of the engine placement (in the rear of the vehicle), transported infantry must mount and dismount through the sides in the BTR-60P or through the roof hatches in the roofed BTR-60PA, BTR-60PB, and BTR-60PZ variants."
  8. Interesting film. The BTR could also bei dismounted through both sides. Somewhat cramped between the tires is a small door. And I assume the backdoors were also an option. Kind of odd they got that wrong in the video.
  9. Interesting indeed. Astonishing to see how late some modern equipment was handed out to the muj. The Milan as late as 1988 so with the soviets well on their way out.
  10. There are alternative silhouettes for CM Afghanistan. If they work in CMCW you'd have different Silhouettes for most of the soviet units.
  11. I downloaded it a couple of times. The problem remained. So I guess the file ist somehow damaged.
  12. Is anyone else having trouble unpacking the patch? I keep getting an error message when I try to unzip the file. I have tried different unzipping-programs but the file won't unzip.
  13. Osprey has announced more information on the upcoming book on the panjshir Valley campaigns. Scheduled for release in late october: https://ospreypublishing.com/the-panjshir-valley-1980-86 It covers quite a large time frame so I hope it won't be to shallow. But I am still very much looking forward to this.
  14. Interesting, the battle for hill 3234 must be well-known in russia and former SU member countries. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_for_Hill_3234 The battle ist described in the Osprey duell series vdv para vs mujahedin. And there is also a user made scenario for CMA depicting it, which I have not played yet tough.
  15. The title is (as of now): The Panjshir Valley 1980–86 The Lion Tames the Bear in Afghanistan
  16. Osprey hast also announced a campaign title about the panjshir-battles that will be released at some time this year. Apparently it is due for late october.
  17. I have read the Osprey Combat version on Afghanistan. Maybe it was already mentioned here, it is out for quite some time. I liked it a lot. It is called: "Soviet Paratrooper Vs Mujahideen Fighter: Afghanistan 1979–89"
  18. Maybe not really a tactical question but what exactly was the role of Cavalry Units during that time? It is supposed to be lighter, more mobile then other armoured formations? So a kind of recon force? Yet still some Cav. Divisions also fielded MBT's.
  19. That's an impressive list. I purchased the soviet counterpart to David Isbys book on the NATO forces. It is called: "Weapons and tactics of the soviet army". So it also covers tactical aspects. The soviet way of war, so to speak. Btw quite funny to read that many westeners expected the auto- loader to be a weakness or kind of design flaw in the "new" T-64 and T-72
  20. I Just finished reading "die Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald" from Reinhard Wolters. Good factual book. Wolters ist sceptical about Kalkriese beeing the varus Battle place, btw. Don not know if it was translated into english tough. And yes, one should definitely visit the museum in Kalkriese. Was there recently, it is great.
  21. Surprised me as well. NATO forces in europe need more not less conventionell fighting capabilities.
