The smoke screen was still forming so the upper floor of that building was not yet blocked by smoke when the screenshot was taken.  Below is a screenshot of the tank that won the bottle of schnapps.  On the right you can see the roof of the building through the smoke.   A marksman on the back of the Panther is still keeping an eye on it .

From @theforger's new huge scenario Mission to Maas.   Set on a 4 x 2.3 km map and four hours long Mission to Maas is more like a static campaign and has an operational feel to it.  Very cool scenario so far (one hour in).

There's also no Greeks, but as far as I know this is the first game to offer Indian (including Sikh) and Brazilian forces at this scale. And there are South Africans, Kiwis, Free French, and Poles.  It's sort of a glass half empty-glass half full sort of thing I think. Myself I some hope time gets put into bringing the Free French to Northwest Europe.

This is the way it was in CM1. I don't want to harp on too much about the old CM1, but I find it interesting how the modelization of infantry combat has evolved between the two. Troops would go to ground much more easily. Soldiers would go down and stay prone, often pinned for several turns if incoming fire was too heavy. Advancing against enemy fire was a struggle. It really was. It can be argued that it was too punishing. Now personally I think the pendulum has swung too much in the other direction though, but that's just my opinion. Others might disagree.
You should give it a try. It hasn't aged too well visually to be fair. The graphics were never cutting edge even when it was released but now it looks really dated and there are lots of things that CM2 does better. But I think you might quite like the way it does infantry combat. And I don't mean "if you don't like it, go play CM1". You might find it interesting, that's all. I have been reading your posts on the forum and often share your point of view.

You can be very creative when it comes to planning movement.. but I have a few rules of thumb, maybe they will be useful... the following is from my Platoon Scouts post on my blog.  Hope this is helpful... more detail in that blog and in other posts on moving... I am a huge proponent of using Listening Halts, I have always had good luck with them.

I love playing Soviets and I seldom have problems with running out of SMG ammunition - the leading squads always seem to obligingly leave behind those little round, red ammo dumps for the squads coming up behind.

I dipped my toe into CMRT again last night and I can't say that my Russian inf was laying down anything approaching a fusillade of fire. Russians didn't get special 'nation-specific' coding, it should be working the same as any other bolt action rifle armed forces. I'm going to have to investigate further. BTW, I do NOT have this issue with smg squads which go through ammo like crap through a goose.

Here’s a peak behind the BFC curtain from a long-time Beta tester. (I’m not sure if this is cleared for posting, but what the heck…)

At the most recent BFC-Fest, the band was giving me a headache, so I pushed my way out of the mosh pit and walked up to the main house. Steve’s chauffeur pulled the horse-drawn carriage towards me, but I waved him away. I wanted to clear my head and a walk along the half-mile trail up to the house, lit by torches, was just what the doctor ordered. The amplified sound of the band gradually abated, absorbed by the woods, and the BFC manse came into view as I walked along the trail. Yes, I ignored all but one of the strategically placed drinking stops. Clear headed thinking would only be clouded by single malts. Well, except for one or two.

Arriving indoors, the muted string quartet provided a gentle contrast to the tinkle of champagne flutes among the many conversations. Spotting Steve, alone by the open french doors to the back gardens, smoking the remnants of a tired cigar,  I decided to share my pricing ideas and drove straight towards him.

“Steve,” I said, “I’d like to share a new pricing scheme with you.”

Never taking his eyes off the distant treeline, he gripped his cigar and wrenched it out of his mouth. “Certainly.”

“This’ll be ground-breaking,” I paused. “Give the game away. For free.”

He coughed out a cloud of smoke, “What?!? How would that keep the revenue stream flowing?”

“Simple. The game is free. The men and tanks are not. If anyone wants to FIGHT with a unit, they’d have to pay for each squad, team, or vehicle. Obviously, pricing would be variable, based on unit effectiveness and rarity. Each scenario would have a fixed price, based on the units in the Order of Battle. Quick Battles would be very price sensitive.”

“Players would rack up the units (or scenario) they want. The game would spit out a price and a hash code. Go to the BFC website, paste in the hash, pay by credit card. The website would produce an unlock code, specific to the submitted hash, and they’d be off!”

“This would make campaigns that much more special. No more exploratory recon! Every man would count. Who would want to pay for a Tiger tank twice?”

He turned towards me and fixed his eyes upon mine. He quickly stubbed his cigar out in the caviar tray being carried by a passing waiter. “You may have something…”  And then he strode out the doors onto the deck and continued into the gardens. He was still striding forward as I lost sight of him past the lighting around the fountains.

So, this may become the new way. Just sayin’…"

That's like the World of Tanks franchise where you can play for free until you need to repair your tank or want to upgrade.  I doubt if it would work here.

I was reminded of this thread:
...which I found amusing at the time for its intemperately expressed opinions, and which BF Steve and some other contributors make an excellent case for the premises behind the scenario.
The weird thing is that I don't consider myself a top player (when I had time for PBEMs I lost more than I won), but I didn't find crossing the river especially difficult. You just take your time, accept the casualties and keep pushing forward. It was fun.

I believed you the first time!!  I think you just like making videos!   This video does show very clearly the T-34 does not fire on the first spotted Panther but only reacts to the second Panther.  Thanks!

That's interesting.  The T-34 ignored the stationary target but fired on the moving target.  In @Bulletpoint first save the PSW 222s did not engage (on their own) until the infantry started running.  Then, if they had a spot, they fired 7.92mm.  I have to look at the second save and keep experimenting around with it.  They prefer the challenge of a moving target??

I'm still playing around with the first one you sent me.  And yes your saves only showed spotting.  After I gave a Target Briefly order to Otto's crew the 2nd Platoon HQ fired on its own.  After the 15 second Target Briefly ran out Otto's crew stopped firing for maybe 30 seconds and then on its own began to fire.  But when I don't give the Target Briefly they don't ever engage.  Going on four minutes now.   Not clear on what this means so far.......

You make some great videos my friend!
I noticed that the leader is -1.  Also down in the bottom left of the screen, in green print, is the status block where it shows what individual crew members are doing.  It shows the T-34 as aiming and then firing.  But it gets hit just before it would have presumably fired.  I wonder if it was just slower than the panther because of the -1 leadership (don't know what the Panther leadership was).  You are actually the Guru at soft factors.  Considering that the T-34 was trying to aim and fire but just wasn't fast enough, would that explain it?

Hi Josey, thanks for participating and making the video. It does look exactly like the situations I have been seeing. I've witnessed it with both infantry, light AFVs and tanks.
But it's not only the Soviets doing it. My cases have been with German units in CMFB.
My personal hunch is that it's some TacAI change that's been introduced in v. 4.1, because I've played for years with previous versions and cannot recall seeing it before 4.1.
Just 20 mins ago I sent some savegames for @MOS:96B2P to take a look at.

It also happens with tanks and other AFVs. I have several saves that show armoured cars just looking at targets they are actively spotting, that are close (2-300m range) and that are not in much cover (a bit of forest). They don't open fire. But I can order them to fire, and then they have no problems engaging.

    This thread and @Bulletpoint's topic has struck a chord with something I witnessed recently in the Red Thunder scenario 'Getting Ugly'. As is usually my style I explain it best in a vid;

To me it seems like there is an issue unless someone is able to offer an alternative plausible explanation. Cheers.

    Minute 1:00-0:59:
Commandant Litson only had to wait a short time after getting back into his tank to hear reports. His armoured recon came under mortar fire as soon as they reached the edge of the woods. Not long after that reports came in from members of the assault gun troop that there was a bunker observing them from the hill at KT3. We are lucky they didn't drop shells on the infantry. A quick check with Lt Col Ram Singh shows his men are not under fire and the crossing of the river is proceeding.
Things begin to happen pretty much right away. The armoured recon units come under mortar fire as soon as they near their positions. The enemy must have known we were forming up (Aside: Bud sent me an email saying he was sorry for the first turn barrage – he made a mistake. Since it had little effect I said no to worry – well weave it into the story).

The assault gun troop spot a bunker on the hill.

The guys with the 105mm cannons are pretty much the perfect troop to spot a bunker
