German helmets not working to full capacity
Hardradi replied to Hardradi's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Thanks mj. Like you I have not had any issues with other textures in CMBN or CMFI. I also thoroughly checked all the files names. The issue I appear to be having is not directly related to mods. Further to the details below, I suspect you are probably not using the Full 4.0 installer version of CMBN being a long time player you may still be using the an old legacy version upgraded to 4.0. * * * * * With further testing I have sort of got to the bottom of this problem. WITHOUT ANY MODS: 1) Full 4.0 installer file version - does not work correctly. As reported above, the stock textures for German helmets 5, 6 or 7 never appear. The game is limited to four textures for the German helmet: null, 2, 3 and 4. (Tested on a new installation, the 4.5GB file). 2) My old legacy version which went through the entire upgrade chain over the years - this works correctly. WITH MODS: As above. Can someone with a version of CMBN Full 4.0 install check on their system (this is the entire game from the 4.5GB file)? Link to files that you can drop into your mod folder to test the stock textures: Link Time for a beer. -
After painstakingly compiling a few German helmet mods (thanks to the modders for these), I have not been able to get them to show correctly. Also, it appears to me that there may be a problem with the stock installation/files as follows: 1) the stock helmet "smod_german_helmet-soldier 5.bmp" never appears in game. Also numbers 6 and 7 also never appear, they are near duplicates of 1 and 2 so it is hard to tell for sure. The screenshot below from a test shows that stock German helmets 5, 6 or 7 never appear. 3) I also note in the stock files there is a "smod_german_helmet-soldier 1.bmp". Normally the numbering of 1 is never used. Perhaps this is the problem and only limits the number of German helmets to 4 in total. These files are in the 2.0 data file. I have checked this across three installations on my system, a fresh v 3.12, a borked v 4.0 and a fresh 4.0. Had the same issue. Is anyone else able to get german helmets to show from 5+ in CMBN?

Highlanders! - The battle of Gerbini
Hardradi replied to Kaunitz's topic in CM Fortress Italy Maps and Mods
Yes, I am. Coincidentally, I was reading about this battle a few months ago. I was looking for a map of the region/battle and a Google search brought me to this thread. -
I think you might be onto something there. I have am pretty sure I have see this happen but did not know why/how.

Happy New Year's Day! 2018 look ahead

In Berlin I imagine... apocalyptic red skies at night, ragged buildings, streets choked with rubble and smoke. The odd civilian you see is either a crazed old person, snot nosed kid or dishevelled women. All cower in the streets as you carefully pick your way through with your comrades. You are an alcoholic illiterate peasant from a Russian village but a veteran. You have seen it all but when you see a map of Russia, you don't even know where you came from. Your enemy... terrified clerks, youths, wild eyed fanatics and the odd hardened veteran. -
more please.

Amazing detail in this picture. Look at those bricks and the rubble in the foreground. Props to the modders, you and the game.

In my post above, I am mistaken, the Iron Cross Brigade book does have an overview map inside the front cover. Its just a little bit difficult to read. In the Appendices to this book are the diary entries of Gerhard Henrich, 9 June 1941 to a garbled ending around October 1941. It features details of the rail/road journey and descriptions of battles at the southwestern end of the Kiev Fortified Region supporting the 44th Infantry Division. I created a map of this diary in Google. Here is a link if anyone is interested: Map

Besieged is a good book, quite gripping. I am about halfway through Death of the Leaping Horsemen which is also good and half way through Iron Cross Brigade (was a little bit slow to start but now also good). My only feedback of these books is that they do not feature an overview map to trace the units movement across Eastern Europe (whereas Panzerkreig and Into Oblivion do). Do not get me wrong, there are plenty of maps in these two books. I also have Panzerkreig, Into Oblivion and Objective Ponryi but haven't read any of them yet. All are hardbound (DotLH has a dust cover) and I haven't seen any deterioration in the spine yet.

Been waiting for this for a while. Thumbs up. My grandfather served with the 56th "Black Cats" Infantry Division from July 1944 as a Signalman (previously with V Corps). This Division featured in some of the battles covered during the period of R2V. I have been tracing his war history recently, he was wounded in December 1944 ("battle accident") and got hit by a mine April 1944 possibly at The Battle of Argenta Gap. This was very close to the end of the war in Europe. Later, he managed to recover from the injury described as a sucking chest wound.

Nice update JR, appreciate the work. Living up to your namesake with the scouts/patrol. Those poor guys must have been taken from the nearby penal battalion. -

Shall try to start an unofficial screenshots thread?

I was checking out some uniform mod graphics when I stumbled across this guy from the 3rd Infantry Division. -
Its an epic campaign. I learned the ropes playing it at Veteran level. I used up a lot of my demo charges early on, learning how to use them. This made it a struggle as I always felt like I was funnelled into cunningly set up specific kill zones. Afterwards, it was a relief to get out of the hedgerow country into the more open fields of Italy.

Looking forward to this. Looks like an interesting scenario and an interesting test for your defence guidelines Bill. Reviewing the map looks like a good way to figure out where those obscure 'gap-tiles' are amongst other things. -
Can 105 MM Artillery Knock out AFV?
Hardradi replied to CanuckGamer's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
I recently knocked out a Tiger with off board British 25 pounders against the AI. Four guns, directly on the spot where the Tiger was sitting. There was a neat little whole just in front of the loaders hatch. https://imgur.com/a/mUfg2 -

Squads breaking cover for no reason?
Hardradi replied to sandman2575's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Just tried this and it was pretty easy. I already had a copy of all CMBN 3.11 files so I didn't have to re-download. I installed this to a directory which I named "...Normandy 3.12" so I knew exactly where it would be. I then downloaded the patch (which is 3.12). Curiously, it didn't give me an option of where to install the patch when I ran the .exe file, so I stopped the install. After some brief mucking around it seemed to be dropping it into "...Normandy 3.12". All seems good. Cheers Ian -
