  1. 1648 The AGS attached to the scout platoon lays fire on a suspected enemy position. It appears our scout platoons are facing each other. My BTR-82As against his BRM-1s. And a tank. I think my platoon should be able to outshoot his, but I doubt the ability of RPG-18s and RPG-7Vs to take on even a T-64BM. Further, autocannon fire finds its way through the dense smoke on the opposite bank, knocking out two more BTR-82As. Back to the Scout Platoon's flank, my favourite T-64BM shoots a sabot under the bridge into one of my supporting T-72B3s. My ATGM team continues to look at it and twiddle their thumbs. I've ordered them to move and setup in their hex again to get them to rotate towards that bank. Though at this rate, it'll either disappear or knock out more vehicles before they decide to actually do their jobs! My now last surviving T-72 fires on a spotted BMP-2 as it bogs down. It misses. An SPG-9 round hits its ERA, causing quite an impressive explosion, but no discernible damage. A view across the river, showing the number of destroyed enemy tanks. I've now landed 6 BTRs on the opposite bank. Unless my artillery has done an excellent job, they're not going to be enough. I'm going to attempt to assault the riverbank as best as I can, and the scout platoon will interdict what's left of the SAM Battery. Once these limited goals are completed, I think I'll call a ceasefire since I lack the combat power to do much more. I'm going to have to rebalance the scenario somewhat to get the sweeping battle I envisioned on the opposite bank. Either by giving the Russians better equipment (and maybe more) or by reducing the Ukrainian forces that start on the board. My ultimate hope for this scenario was for the Russians to be able to force a contested crossing with some blood spilt, but not this much! Then to slam into the reinforcing Ukrainians on a meeting engagement on the opposite bank.
  2. That is a beautifully huge map! I might be interested in helping, provided my computer can handle it haha!
  3. The trouble primarily is that the rocket propellant degrades, which could make it not launch or injure the operator. The explosives too, but I think it's to a lesser extent.
  4. Good thoughts. I used the wonderful work by @IanL and @Ithikial_AU to gauge the actual weather on this date at this location, including wind and temperature. Additionally, the original map actually had a road bridge, but I was corrected that it's actually a railroad. I think I can drive vehicles over a railroad bridge too, but I haven't tried it yet.
  5. Or the Fletcher's Paradox. There is always half of the work left to do. In engineering, we joke that you can always get close enough for practical purposes haha!
  6. 1647 The scout unit's BTRs cross seemingly unmolested. A knocked out BRM-1 is in the foreground. It may have friends nearby, but the last fifteen minutes of observation have only shown the scout team associated with it. My platoon should have little problem taking them out, and I think the BTR-82A's autocannon will be more than a match for a BRM-1's low pressure gun at close range, if it comes to that. But I didn't expect my overwatching ATGM team to fall asleep. They stare at a T-64 as it drives out of the woodline towards the crossing BTRs. Over the course of a minute, it gets into position and takes out the headquarters BTR just a dozen meters from the shore. It doesn't have good sight on the remaining two, so they should be able to drop off their troops, but I doubt the ability of RPG-16s to take on an MBT! Finally, some autocannon fire reaches out of the smoke and damages another BTR as it crosses the river. Things are going very badly right now. I think I pushed too hard at the beginning and rushed the crossing in the name of the Blood God. I'm sure Ken is satisfied! The restart of the scenario also definitely didn't help, since I guess my opponent got a good enough look at my strategy and I didn't change it enough! Things are looking grim, with almost a dozen BTRs sinking in the Dnjepr and heavier enemy presence than anticipated. I'm currently feeling that I need to give the Russians more troops when I update the scenario (or better ones for this crossing, since it's approximately even). Time will tell.
  7. With that type of deadline, Steve, are you sure you don't work for NASA? I'll satiate myself on the awesome AARs being posted and digging my way through Red Thunder in the meantime. I kinda agree with the upset about the information blackout, it's always nice to know more. But perhaps it's best knowing that you're hard at work making things happen!
  8. I sent it to Ian but now that I think of it, I don't think my opponent visits this forum so I'll post it when I get home today. Edit: Turn is here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=11_erpUiUrYmQKfc0qiWim0SUD41a96Bu Turn password is "hairtonic" (get it?) You can get a glimpse at how poorly things are going for me on the Dnjepr...
  9. That's true, there may be a bush in front of the launcher. Annoying that i have to put up with a whole minute of unpack and pack time just to move the launcher a few centimeters if that's the case... I'm beginning to see the annoying LoS issues that people sometimes complain about. Zero feedback to me as to why they decide shooting isn't worth it...
  10. Be my guest. I also plan on clearing up some issues like the slope at the riverbank and obstacles in the Dachas. I'm excited to see what your wizardry can do!
  11. Me too. May be why I never saw this before, since I rarely use target let alone target arcs! I agree that complexity is not always the solution - I find the AI often makes good decisions on what weapon to use.
  12. Not yet - it's pretty big so I'm tinkering around with smaller scenarios so I can learn what I'm doing in the (totally opaque in my opinion) AI editor . I've had fairly limited time lately, so that hasn't helped.
  13. Nope. They were sitting there, spotted the tank the previous turn. I gave the target command on the tank, it moved across their line of sight, where they lost it after about 45 seconds, then the tank shot and killed a BTR. This team in particular I think fired one ATGM at the beginning of the game, missed, and has spotted various vehicles for the past 10 minutes and refused to shoot at any of them.
  14. So in that case even with a target command and line of sight they'll ignore it? Curious.
  15. I've been having a problem with my ATGMs in my PBEM game. They won't shoot at anything. This team spent the whole minute with a target order on the tank, but didn't even rotate to aim at it. The tank drove forwards into full view and nuked a BTR. What's the trick into getting ATGMs to fire? Has anyone else seen this happen? I'm running CMBS v2.00
  16. 1646 The BTRs engage enemy positions as they cross. They're moderately effective, but I really wish I had BMPs for this! Infantry are squirrely, though. A squad hidden in the copse by the river fires an RPG at one of the crossing BTRs - a hit! At this point I feel I haven't prepared the opposite bank enough. BMPs, ATGMs, and a T-64(!!) have knocked out four BTRs as they cross the river. There are at least two enemy tanks remaining, since the one I have spotted does not have a good view of the river itself. A T-64 spotted by one of my Konkurs teams. They spent about 20 seconds staring at it without trying to engage, so they have a direct target order for this next turn. Hopefully a Konkurs can defeat the ERA! Despite the shortfalls, the Ukrainian side of the river is a moonscape. Here we can see a lone crewmember taking cover in a crater as smoke shells rain down in front of him. It's not all bad, though. Two BTRs have landed intact. The Company HQ and a rifle squad, all laden with extra disposable RPGs to deal with any latent armoured threat. Once I can assemble a platoon of the survivors, we can start limited offensive operations to clear out. The view from my side of the river. I don't have a picture of it, but the reconnaissance team has been crossing the western side of the river unmolested. We previously knocked out a BMP sitting cover there, and spotted a small team watching over the river. I have no doubts that he knows I'm crossing, but the enemy appears unable to do anything about it. An AGS is finished setting up and will start to pepper the spotted scout team.
  17. That's where you're wrong. You know what they say - the best defence is a good offence! Think about it - Bil is expecting you to sit there and take it. Quick, decisive action is the key to victory!
  18. I never realized how dopey the C2 upgrade looks! Kinda like a combat toaster or something. Looking forward to the battle proper!
  19. I rendered them in Blender and if I recall correctly touched them up in Photoshop.
  20. I think they've ran into some technical problems which delayed them from the 8th and this past weekend too.
  21. 1645 Just a couple of screenshots. The crossing continues, and is beginning to look a bit more organized. I've been somewhat attrited, but in the next few minutes I should be able to dump a reinforced company across the river. Supporting fire from the riverbank lays into a Ukrainian trenchwork blocking the railway access. Staccato autocannon shots burst around an SPG-9 emplaced in the fortification. A view from the railroad bridge at the BTRs as they cross the river.
