VladimirTarasov got a reaction from Sgt Joch in General Topics Related To CMBS
Steve, I didn't argue with you just because you kept providing sources from Ukraine, Or 5th columnist news to me, Or even US and British. You sound really convinced, So I won't argue with you on things like that just because it is not pleasant for me, And it will make no difference arguing. I won't argue on this one either, Call it what you want, But I am simply filled up, Same stories, Same propaganda, Same lies. It isn't healthy for me being a Russian citizen who has relatives who are directly effected by the war, Who have people in Crimea, Yet you as the American citizen you are certainly know about what went on in Crimea. Also I haven't provided any links solely because I know no one will change their minds. That is why I think we should keep the topic on track, Instead of fueling me by bringing up incidents in Ukraine. This is a good game, And fun topics to talk about, Why always fuel it into hate?

sburke, you need to chill out, you have been getting on some of my nerves with that "poo poo" what ever that means, This is the Armata discussion thread if it gets locked because of you I will have put -1 reputation   But seriously lets not derail this thread, It made it 85 pages long so far.

LNR lads probably rushed a advance before reinforcements of UA would arrive, That devil tank came and lit them up. Leader's mistake, I would have atleast set up a ATGM section watching the advance. Well, Sad losses for both sides.

LOL citing George Bush for winning a fair election is not exactly a selling point.    Yes we do have our own issues here.

Fair enough Vladimir and good point.  Maybe at some point I will take you up on that.  I am very curious to hear an alternative view from inside Russia.  Forewarning you may be unsuccessful at changing my perspective.  I am a stubborn pita at times... okay a lot of times.  No idea why my wife agreed to marry me.  She probably lost a bet.

It is entirely possible sure, but not very relevant in the case of people that have access to internet. Everyone has exactly the same availability of news sources, including opposing ones. That is why I do not understand why people keep on clinging to the frankly outdated denial formula "your media is bias" on the internet.

I started up the scenerio, haven't gotten too far in yet (there's a reason I tend to play quick battles, it's usually what I've got the 30-40 minutes for).  More results to follow, but just eyeing the terrain it's not the sort of stuff I'd want to fight an Abrams on.

    Re: Tanking

I still technically am an Armor officer, although I've moved to the National Guard (which is its own odd Americanism).  I was only really a "tank*" officer for my initial officer training and the last two years of my active service.  As a new Lieutenant I trained on the M1A1HC, and the absolute baseline M3A2 (it had the armor upgrades to make it a A2, but did not have the LRF or any of the other Operation Desert Storm period upgrades), then spent a few years in an Cavalry squadron mostly doing Iraq focused counter-insurgency training/operations.  I did wind up being the Executive Officer for the one Cav Troop in our Squadron that was still training on Bradleys for one of our deployments though, so while I didn't get to play with them, I'm fairly well acquainted with the feeding and care of them.    Then I went off to some advanced training, and then spent some time in Korea working chiefly with M1A2 SEP V2s, including a stint as a company commander which frankly will likely be the "best" years of my military service.    I'm still in an "armored" unit in the National Guard but I now work at the Brigade HQ level (which shouldn't be confused with my being especially important, I'm simply now senior enough to be the small fish in a big pond).

*the various recon units in the US Army are part of the Armor branch.  While the enlisted and NCO personnel are their own distinct MOS and are generally not interchangeable without being retrained, the officer level leadership bounces between the armor and cavalry organizations.

That sounds interesting, Would love to hear about your service in the tank forces, I am a tank nut myself and addicted to learning about tanks I was a ground troop at most, Although I have driven the BMD-2 and BTR-80 before. And yes, The imager is the most important for target identification and engagement, It boggles my mind how Russia just started mass introduction of thermals onto tanks in 2005, While the U.S. has been doing it since the 80s... But the tanks we had were for European standards, Mostly 1500 meter engagement ranges. At night operations the U.S. tanks clearly had advantages back then and still do in overall quantity and for now quality.

When a 45kg round smashes 25mm armor with ~12000J at almost verticaly, I'd think you don't even need to consider how effective the tip is. That's all discounting exсluding a 9kg explosive as well.

VladimirTarasov reacted to c3k in Why is Russian artillery so slow--even in Emergency setting?
Your FAC is calling in the arty? Well, that's probably the issue. A FAC calls in air. An FO calls in arty. Your FAC is telling the air coordination center what he wants. The guy back there has to tell his supervisor what the FAC just said. THAT guy, then runs to the next track and relays to the XO what was just said. The XO uses his cell-phone to text his buddy from the Frunze Academy (who is the XO of the arty regiment) what his FAC wants. The arty XO tells the sergeant what to do. The arty sergeant relays that on the radio to the battery fire control center. That FCC translates plain english (or Russian ) into digital commands and sends it the half-battery assigned to fire. After asking for verification.

It's not that it takes your FAC a long time to scream into the microphone that he wants arty, it's that the radio net/command structure is not in place to do so very responsively.

So if it's not a TOW missile what is it? And saying that special forces did all that in Ukraine is not logical at all I do not want to offend you but it seems you guys forget why all this happened in the first place (BECAUSE OF THE RIOTS) not trying to shout that out btw just highlighting. There is footage of a rioter using a sniper rifle and guns, Even throwing molotovs. But when the government starts to defend themselves "Oh my god they are killing their own" how about the countless crimes police in America have committed against their own people? And Syrian civil war has been fueled by America and its allies, Saudi Arabia sends most of those terrorists over there where as the American government trains and supplies them. But I don't think this argument will get us anywhere we both believe in 2 opposite things.

There is a huge difference between the RPG-7 being in the hand of rebels and a TOW-2 missile being in the hand of rebels. RPG-7 has been exported to many countries alike where as the TOW-2 has not. Russia is supplying a legit government unlike the U.S. so I do not get what makes you think supplying some Al-Nusra and Al-qaeda related groups are you guys joking or serious?

If you think Putin is stupid enough to send 2012 model T-72B3s to Ukraine then you are probably full of it. I must have missed his post I'll respond to it here, As you know eastern Ukraine also has bases right? Where T-72s and T-64s are located at? But you probably think "Putler" will send in tanks to a zone with a huge population that has cameras. It is alright you guys think whatever, I'm planning on going to Donetsk again maybe this time I'll volunteer for other jobs too instead of helping out spreading water and food.

Should every country that does have nuclear weapons disband it's military now?

What tanks would you use to make it "armor heavy", Commander? And by "keeping it all under the same BDE/REG", do you mean like having BTR-based BDEs have tanks in them?

"Good stuff", and forces overall, are dispersed along the most threatening axis. These are the exact words from Ru MoD.

That's a very constructive point. BTRs are not intended to move rapidly into enemy's territory. BTR-90 should have had ATGM, Boomerang will have ATGM, but those BTRs in actual service indeed do not have ATGMs. There's BRDM-based ATGM (and the one on Tigr-M chassis in the production as well), but AFAIK it's used in separate anti-tank formations that can be attached where it's needed.

Nona is a versatile mortar/light arty system, it is not intended to be used against tanks.

I can guarantee that I'm better than some Russian fanboys, who are living in the dream world like "m829a4 cannot penetrate t90am since t90am have 800mm+ KE defense without ERA" , or "T90am's shells can penetrate M1A2 front armor at any circumstances". "M1A2 are greatly over estimated" . Obviously, some Russian fantasy world lovers believe that their hope can realized beyond the physics.

Russian technological inferiority, specially about core science related with chemistry and material science, is the real and main point behind all the Russian weapon vs US weapons discussions. Just simple, Russian technology and science is declining in its quality and quantity, since all smart Russians try to escape their nation, and their economy cannot support such expensive projects. 1960s and 1970s were the good days of Russian science.  Let's see, and let's observe how Armata looks like. But if someone expect Armata as an ultimate doomsday weapon which can beat M1A2 SEP v2 and Leo 2A7 like a cake, I will not convinced about that.

GSR isn't a magic eyeray that sees through all things.  It's pretty easy to confuse, and on a battlefield there is a lot of terrain between the emitter and the possible targets.  It is not useless by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not like press button and on the screen the location of all enemy tanks within the claimed effective range appears.

It's the same sort of logic that made the US Army buy up a million LRAS3 type systems, and the same unfortunate reality in terms of the tyranny of lines of sight, target fidelity, and the reality that most military forces avoid the wide open spaces that favor sensor-centric warfare.

So to elaborate on my earlier comment, in a world filled with sensor contacts that are both targets, and not targets, ground based radar is good at telling you where things are vs not.  It's marginal at discriminating between targets, and still totally subject to LOS issues.  It can shoot at the maybe targets, but again its not good at bulldozer vs tank, and it is just as bad as every other optic at seeing behind terrain.
