    *******WARNING SPOILER **********

I played this scenario as the Russians, I dont want to brag but I got a Total victory. 750-100. The Ukrainians were down to 16 men holed up in the apartment complex. I lost 17 killed and 17 wounded along with 3 BTRs (2 on fire and another damaged and abandoned) . It's a challenging scenario for the Russians, no wonder people playing Ukraine against the AI are trashing the Russians. I used what little mortar rounds I had on the grenade launcher on the rooftop, using airbursts. I also killed an RPG team I detected on a rooftop on the other side of the bridge with my sniper team. BMP-2s are better than in Shock force BTW, they detected and killed some of my guys at long range.  The Oplot tank almost ruined my day but I detected it in time and managed to move two of my BTRs to a safe location. It ran into the other two at extreme close range (my BTRs were on a reverse slope) and it got raked pretty good by the two 30mm cannons (1 partial and I complete penetration). It nonetheless managed to kill one BTR and damage the other, with the surviving BTR's driver fleeing in panic. The Oplot then retreated because of too much damage and I finished it later with a dismounted RPG team from the infantry.

Plenty of great nail biting moments in that battle. Best fun I've ever had in Combat mission. I was about to kill the tank when I first detected it (with an RPG team) but after staying still for two turns at a crossroad, the sucker decided to move out of sight as my RPG man was going to press the trigger hehe (costed me a BTR later)  The snipers that I sneaked in the little warehouse taking out the RPG team on the rooftop on the other side of the bridge was great too. I took out the last BMP at the corner of the map near the apartment complex using an antitank team I separated from the company HQ squad. I had loaded the squad with 4 RPG-26s acquired from the BTR and the team crawled its way to a nice flanking position on the BMP and nailed it on the second shot (they had two). Ammo expenditures for covering fire were extreme and for the first time in a game I had to bring forward the BTRs to resplenish my infantry.

Javelin is standard US equipment and frankly in the games i've played they shoot once and then get killed by return fire, are supressed by HE artillery  or are severely degraded by my artillery deployed smokescreens. They Kill my tanks 50% of the time since I dash from tree to tree whenever possible so they are not a uberweapon against a competent russian commander  (like sublime). As for Abrams having an excellent chance of surviving return fire , I would say moderate since weapons mount, top armor and lower Hull penetrations are fairly common at the average ranges  in game (depressingly so when I play the US). Even the thickest armored parts (right and left front turret) are ônly 100% effective if the shot comes from head-on. As soon as the shooter is not right in front (a little bit to the side)  you start to see disabling partial and full penetrations on those areas.  You achieve this by having multiple spread out shooters at a single Abrams. The only part of the Abrams 100% invulnerable is the upper front Hull IF the shooter is at the same terrain level. If its higher its à question of luck.
I always play as or play against veteran and crack Russians .

id just like to sayy references to my.luck and skill at killing us armor ismt bragging tho i could see it being construed as suchm rather its a response to a large contingent who thnk russ equipment in game is nerfed. its not. the playwers usijg it wrong or just isnt good. yes certain systems may meed tweaking but even as is victory if used possible is quite achievable.

I'm on a borrowed wifi so my apologies if it's actually nothing but graphic pornography of offensive nature.

However that link SHOULD get you to "Breaking the Mold" which is a handy little historical look at the employment of armor in urban settings from World War Two through realistically Grozny (Fallujah is included, however the book was published only a short time after that fight ended so it's pretty short on details).  It's short, and gives a few great examples of doing it "right" and a few equally quality examples of doing it wrong.

Which is the long way to say the experience with the Bradley in an urban fight is about the same as any of the other IFVs.  It's more likely to find enemies, and a bit more robust against short range AT.  But in a practical sense regardless of BMP-2 or Bradley the machine in the close urban fight matters less than the tactics.  Bradley is just a bit more likely to accomplish mission if you use the tactics poorly or you get unlucky (and then lucky again!)

Also just read the damned book.  It's enlightening.

The Abrams side turret armor is set too high, IMO. It will resist PG-7VR even without the ERA. It has been reported as a bug and will hopefully be adjusted in the next patch.

Yeah and also if you fight as Russian, you must fight like a Russian. You must make liberal and well planned use of  automatic grenade launchers (AGS), RPO units and massive amounts of Mortar and artillery fire. Russians believe in heavy firepower, not aimed rifle fire. WHen you do that, they are very difficult if not downright impossible to fight against in infantry-centric battles. Dont use the russians as you would with US infantry. That's fighting on US terms and you will lose. Fight on YOUR terms.

Way too much work with uncertain results. Especially when an extra  BMP-3 w/APS can be had for the same amount of points, comes with two boomsticks, has smoke and can be deployed anywhere on the map within a minute

And bunching up vs US (even in AI form)? I learned some hard lessons with that on at least 10 separate occasions. That arty comes fast and then keeps on dogging you. Literally everything and everyone can call in arty on you faster than your dedicated FOs and ATCs.

Did à test . A platoon of RPO (10 two men teams) against a US reconnaissance platoon in some standard 2 storey houses. So far, after three battles, 72-1 in casualties in favor of the Russians. They are very effective. Some shots took out 5 soldiers at a time. Three houses were flattened.

Dont stay static for long ... Move fast in dashes, use cover and concealment, recon, recon, recon (drones, specialized troops). For russian: arty is your friend, suppress suspected enemy infantry positions, move fast from overhead cover to overhead cover to prevent javelin from acquiring (slow) and if not possible use trees as APS. Get in close fast.

The T-90AM with version 1.03 (relikt quite effective) can win long range fights (2000 meters +) with the M1A2 .

Krizanthema is very effective and would be even more so in real life (toned down in game).

antaress73 got a reaction from agusto in tank tactic
Agusto :dont use the impact angle tactic with the Abrams . Maximum frontal turret armor LOS on the Abrams turret is from a narrow angle from the front. It you hit the frontal turret at an angle you hit it at 90 degrees and it is easier to penetrate (less LOS thickness). Not good for the Abrams. I've seen full penetrations of the thick left and right side front turret because of that.

Lucky 1 in a thousand shot ... Nope arena very rarely defeat javelin.. A javelin once hit the front turret too and failed to penetrate . your jav is heading for thé front Hull even if diving it was briefly in arena's engagement enveloppe and it was enough

A company of M1A2s (14 tanks, including 5 with APS) frontal attack over 3.5-4km of open steppe terrain.. 3 krizanthemas hull-down on a hill... they kill 6 M1A2s.. damage another and the crew bails out.. 7 are left... The Kriz lose two (Ihad to move them a little and they got detected) and the remaining retreats downhill because no more ammo (but 4 kills). 20 T-90AMs who were waiting at the bottom of the hill get into hull down positions.. 7 were hit over the course of the battle by M829A4s where there is relikt coverage .. only one penetrated. A T-90AM survived two hits on the frontal upper hull because of relikt. It is very effective at 3.5km (6 out of 7 rounds stopped). I lost three T-90AM (two weapons mount penetrations and a relikt fail). They killed the remaining M1A2s. When lased they had time to back off and get out of harm's way ... Two had their 7.62mm mount destroyed by sabot rounds (close call). Shoot and scoot.

The russians were typical (some green crews,  many regulars, and 1-2 veteran). The US were also typical ( a few crack, many veterans and a few regulars). Total tally for that US frontal attack long range slugfest at 3.5km... 13 US tanks destroyed, one mission kill and abandoned and 1 Bradley for 2 Kriz and 3 T-90AMs destroyed. The T-90AMs won 7-3 at that range against the M1s.

The russians were definitely broken before patch 1.03. Now they are nasty. Who needs the Armata ? They just upgrade the 900 T-90As to the AM standard (like they said they would do, read that on a russian site) and they should be okay.
