There was a post-WWII AAR report (that many posters here have strongly questioned the veracity of) that said a surprising large percentage of US infantry never fired their rifles in combat. Ostensibly afraid that they'd attract unwanted attention from the enemy in doing so (in the game this might be the infantry 'cower'). After WWII Army training placed strong emphasis on getting the soldier to shoot his weapon as an automatic response, because a thinking response was often "Don't pull the trigger and get yourself noticed". It was mostly the green replacement troops and '90 day wonder' lieutenants brought into a veteran unit that ascribed to the 'John Wayne' style of fighting, and they usually got themselves killed off rather quickly.

Don't get me wrong though, I am not advocating for anything Sci-Fi. Just pointing out that a earth invasion background like that (especially in WWII) would save a lot of work. Really, they'd probably need to wait for CM3 to do a science fiction title real justice. I'd buy it, whatever it was, but I can find that kind of game anywhere. I am here for the history first and foremost.

I think he did one several years back about how the South won the Civil War with the help of AK-47 rifles supplied by time-traveling South Africans.

I've been holding off posting an official update because there's been an annoying detail and a few other things that needed to get nailed down first.  It's pretty much where I need it to be, so expect a post in a few days. -Steve

The difference being that I am nearly 75 years old, have had something resembling a full life, and don't have my shorts in a twist because SF2 is a week late.

    Hi everyone,
Here is a cinematic video featuring Shock Force 2! This is meant to be a showcase, similar in concept to a gameplay trailer. Keep in mind this is footage taken from a beta build of the game, and things are subject to change and all that. Hope you all enjoy!

zinzan reacted to Badger73 in How do you regain fire superiority after it's lost, and how do you manage it at each step?
One addition, if I may.  Use smoke!  Popping smoke or shooting smoke tank / artillery / mortar rounds between your positions and enemy locations can momentarily screen your movements for safer withdrawal.  However, smoke takes a few moments to establish itself and you will need to prevent enemy advances towards the forces screened.

So, I guess they could post something along the lines of "There has been some unforeseen problems with the game's development so we missed our estimated ship date. These problems also affect the demo. We are currently unsure when the game/demo will be ready". Would that really enlighten you more than your powers of observation?

Well, the total learning curve can be long, not difficult, but long. I've been playing CM since CMBO (the first CM title). I find that I have to readjust my mindset not only for each family, but for the side I'm playing since I try to play each faction as that faction actually was used. This can get particularly difficult playing Soviet after playing U.S. or German. Soviet tactics demand that you follow the plan to the letter, and pursue victory at all costs. You might end up with three Soviet troops on a victory location with the rest of the Batallion lying dead on the field, and be granted a total victory. Each family and module can require rethinking your strategies even if their time frame is only a few months apart. That's the real beauty if the Combat Mission line.
without a doubt though, it is well worth the time and effort!

Well, we had a scenario pack for BS, and the 4.0 upgrade for all five titles. So, there was stuff that was released, just nothing sexy. And then Chris left, which slowed down FI apparently. So, we'll see I guess.

I find the two year thing much more disconcerting than BF lack of communications about release dates that were given with disclaimers about their accuracy.

Nah. This crap always blows over the minute the games get into our grubby hands. Then a new kind of b****ing starts!  This is the typical pre release frustration. It's probably worse this time because it's been over two years since we've had any new modules or titles.

Since you asked so nicely, Steve posted the following on August 9 ( or is that 9 August to you) on page 15 in the"state of CMSF2" thread. The bolding is mine.
And that's it, I'm done feeding the Troll.

"Seriously, this is just another example of the futility of release dates.  If I post wrong ones we get skewered for not delivering on expectations those dates set.  If I post no dates we get skewered for not doing things which set expectations which we aren't sure we can meet.  Damned if we do, damned if we don't is a really unfair position to be in, but we accept that is the way things work.
Given that we have to make a choice between being damned for setting up expectations that aren't met or damned for not setting up expectations, I think the right choice is the latter.  If someone wants to lay out a rational case for doing things differently, I'm all ears.
    Steve
P.S.  one of the beautiful things about being an independent, self publishing game developer is we don't have any problem with someone tuning out for a year and then coming back to see what we have.  We don't have a 60 day window to make or break our future like other game companies.  So if people want to check back with us in a year because that works best for that person, it works fine for us too.  No pressure."
